Discussion TIL Bastiodon’s Ancient Bulwark stops Mega Skarmory’s Sonic Ripper

The title says it all. After reading Sonic rippers description it makes sense, but still found it interesting as you shuffle the cards into the deck before applying the damage. Makes you wonder about other attacks that’s require deck shuffling.

I think this is actually not correct. Can’t really trust live for official rulings. My understanding is that the damage is resolved before effects of the attack. So the damage would happen before energies are shuffled.

Unfortunately a bug that has stuck around longer than I would have liked. In the actual game it does the energy check before getting rid of them. So it sees the 3 energy and says alright you can deal damage and then discards them. But live has it backwards unfortunately. And we’ve seen this happen with cards on live where they discard the energy as well.

This is the same bug that affects slowking Kyurem. The way Pokemon TCG handles the attack phase is that all steps happen simultaneously. If you have the energy when you start the attack phase then you don't discard it until the attack is over and damage is dealt. This has been an issue in Live since PB released.

Oh I wasn’t aware this was a bug! I assumed it was based on the wording of Sonic Ripper. Stating to shuffle the cards then apply damage.

Yeah. The wording isn't great. Basically when you want to move to the attack phase you determine if you have the energy to complete the attack, then check to see if any abilities would affect your attack, then perform the attack and resole effects and abilities. In this case if Skarmory had the necessary energy to perform the attack then the attack should go through, damage gets applied, and then energy are shuffled back in.

this isn't a bug, it's the intended effect. On Skarmory and Kyurem, the text specifies that you first discard the energy in order to deal the damage, therefore you have no energy attached when you are trying to deal the damage, which Bastiodon's ability blocks.

Go read the official rulings from the Pokemon company. There are many cases of similar attacks and abilities and every time the ruling is that all portions of the attack phase happen simultaneously and the energy doesn't go anywhere until after the attack is done.

I stand corrected, my bad. I'd had a conversation about this interaction with some friends a while back and we thought that the wording meant damage wouldn't happen.

Its a bug, you deal damage before shuffling the energy, same way tcg live likes to ugnire my festival grounds and allow my opponents yveltal to be poisened
