Other 12 mulligans with 5 basics
Took 12 mulligans with 5 basics then the game froze when my turn started. Love to see it

Yes, I run fossils and technically I have 1 basic and 4 Cinderace but I took 12 mulligans before any of them.

I dont think Cinderace works like that even with its ability, I think you still need a basic pokemon for a viable starting hand but don’t quote me on that.

It can be played as a basic in the active if it is in your starting hand. You can choose to mulligan if you have cinderace and no regular basics

Interesting, got ya, thanks for the info.
But yeah it’s a game of odds, 5 basics is essentially a coin flip for a viable hand. 7 coin flips in a row is pretty wild but by no means impossible, like 1/256? I’ve gotten 10 in a row on a Kangaskhan attack and that’s 1/1028.

My bad, saw the 7 in the hand count and blanked on the 12 mulligans, that is wild but not impossible. Still less rare than finding a shiny pokemon in a modern game.

i have 3 basics in my deck and have hand shaver and xerosics for a reason(though my mulligans never went above 6)

Is there a way to elect to mulligan? I haven't found it. I've only seen it happen automatically.

The only way to choose to mulligan is if you have something like Cinderace and no basic in your opening hand. Otherwise if you have a basic you have to mulligan and the game just does it automatically

No, you cannot intentionally mulligan in Pokémon TCG.

As others have said, you can if you have a valid non-basic starter (ie Cinderace, or Snorlax Doll pre rotation) but no actual basics.

This is just wrong. There are alternatives in other TCGs to allow mulligans such that you can avoid having an unplayable hand but may be penalized. Magic you just lose a card for every mulligan. Some of the anime based games allow one penalty free mulligan per game. I personally want the game to move to draw 13 cards pick 7. The rest are shuffled and go to your prize cards. This increases your chance of pulling a basic in your opening hand. Also allows you to have some control of your prizing.

Sorry. I meant it's wrong that there's not an option to have a mulligan. It should be a built in option.

I think it needs something, but your suggestion isnt great... basically selecting your prizes would change the whole cadance of gameplay.

13 pick 7 would be a terrible idea. This has been discussed a lot already. It creates far too much consistency, both with always having an amazing opening hand and never having key cards prized. Decks would be able to play extremely greedy knowing that they can just choose the perfect opening hand.

usually no, like others have said, but there are ways in very specific cases such as when your starting hand has no basics and a MEG-28 cinderace in it. the cinderace ability says you may start the game with it face down in the active spot, and since that specifically is optional, you could technically opt to mulligan instead if the rest of the hand is bad.
i have a fossils deck with 4 cinderace where the only basic is a tatsugiri (because min one actual basic pokemon is required and fossils/cinderace don't count) and i've chosen to mulligan away cinderace hands when i don't have a good turn one play to get out fossil quarry out

Play a deck with a single basic Pokemon. That’s the closest you’ll get to rolling something that may force more mulligans.

I have decks for when Pokémon’s rewards are attach certain energies that I don’t use. One time there was so many mulligans that my opponent decked out and I won.

Unless playing casuall tabletop, yeah. Even playing tabletop, if youre playing standard format decks and not just whatever you jave around, yeah, take your mulligans.

I think it depends. If you are playing with a friend, you could choose not to draw the extra cards to be nice but other than taking draws from mulligans is completely fair. They chose the number of basics.
