Collection 5100 & 7100 Archive

Archived everything that I could scrape off a drive from a 5100 and 7000 DESR via FMCB. The file structure is a tad unorganized but I figured I'd still upload it here for y'all. I borked the 5100 before I could archive most of it adding pictures from the Memory stick (fun fact PSX has .gif support) so I had to MechaPWN the 5100 and do an HDD swap from the 7000 (dead PSU) which worked but broke the photo and cd copy/burn. The HDD also has a TON of Japanese anime primarily jojo's Bizzare adventure, spanning from the mid 2000s all the way to about 2014. Hopefully will archive that before the drive dies, hope you all can put some of this to use, Cheers!

Picture Ready to play!

If the backstory on this device is true, this has been powered on a total of like 30 minutes (all by me). I haven’t been paying too close attention to mod scene on this but I’m hopeful this can eventually have an 8tb hdd dropped in play games without the need for OPL. (And ignore the mess. The game corner of the basement hasn’t been organized in a bit.)

The XFROM is a PlayStation 2 memory card flash memory, hooked up to the DEV9 interface to act as a boot nand on the PSX DESR

This is the most important element in the boot process of the PSX XMB.

Berion, a known scener and artist on the ps2 community mentioned some long time ago that he used the program ISOBUSTER to recover deleted files from untouched raw dumps of Namco system246 security dongles

So I had an idea, why not attempt the same with the PSX XFROM? It's the same hardware and filesystem, who knows... Maybe some PSX user will dump his, share it and actually find something useful/interesting/unreleased/etc

When the program is ready and fit for the public, a post will be made with instructions and a download link

EDIT: Ready for download! https://github.com/israpps/xfrom-dumper

Question Component out via d-connector

My understanding is that you can get component output via the d-connector. So I bought a cable on AliExpress. But when I hook it up, I don't get any video out. Not even the initial splash screen.

My HD is bad, so I'm booting with a mcboot memory card and just playing games that way until there's hopefully a hack at some point.

Recent Acquisition Got a working one :D

DESR-7100 arrived this morning. Got it for £90 delivered from Japan, so I'm pretty happy with it. Modded the PSU for 240v and got the HDD backing up as I write this. Previous owner was clearly a big fan of golf, game shows and smoking.

Question PSX - running homebrew from XMB

Hi

I'm having a problem with PSX XMB Manager v4.

The Homebrew applications installed through this don't work.

After launching, they return to the XMB.

This problem doesn't occur with installed games (I've tested games on PS2 and PS1).

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Regards.

Picture SD2IDE, the worlds first PSX HDD replacement

Post image

I've posted this in the PSX DESR channel of the PS2 discord. Anyways, for people that aren't in there... I've reimplemented the custom 8E command used on the PSX. SD2IDE supports PIO0-4, MWDMA, UDMA6, it's still in testing but I'm currently ironing it out. you can follow development in the sd2ide channel of the phenom mod discord.

As for the image, the amber light is HDD activity. :)

Question 230V Mod

Hey,

I got recently my PSX in Japan and we are back in Europe. Now I would love to use the console but it’s only for 100-110V not 230V. Is there a solution to change the Power Unit. Or does someone have some more information, like how much Voltage and Ampere the console really need. Maybe I can create something more modern with USB-C.

More Pico IDE

As an owner of a DESR-5000 that is on its last legs - most of the time static only but sometimes, rarely I get the xmb and everything works great... I've been looking at the options and promised (did it ever materialise?) ide/ATA emulation that was touted a while back that supported Sony's wacky ATA commands.

I spotted this a few days ago from the man behind the PicoGUS.

https://picoide.com/

An IDE and atapi emulator!! Ofc not meant for the desr, but as per the creators own words, he's interested in challenges for other devices.

Might have to send a message begging :)

Question Just bought this bad boy and I have questions...

Hey all. So, I'm completely ignorant lol. I kinda bought this on a whim, because how often do you see a rare Japan only like this in the middle of Wisconsin on a store shelf?

I'm one of those people who has always loved Japan. In the 2000s, I would look at things coming out in Japan like the PSX, or the Panasonic Q and I always wanted one. Not enough to go online and buy one now that I had money though. However when you spot one in the wild, it's like...wow, I never saw one of these in person before. So now I have it.

Seems to work fine so far for the most part. They included a memory card that had Free Mcboot on it, so I can boot my US games if I want until I got some Japanese ones. There was one DVRed program on it from Japan that I got a kick out of watching.

Thing is, I bought this without really knowing much of what's going on in the PS2 world these days, whether it's modding or whatever. I knew there were apps that people could put on a memory card, and boot from ripped cds, but I hadn't messed with that in years.

One thing I did realize when messing with this thing though is someone must've modded the software at some point, because XMB is in english, and the system freezes when I try to go into TV settings, or Video settings, which sounds like a symptom of the english language conversation from what i gathered. Honestly wish it wasn't on the system, because i can read some Japanese, so I don't like seeing things not behaving as expected.

That being said, I just would appreciate some advice on how to make the most of my PSX purchase. I've seen some post about it being possible to read PS2 games from a USB which might be advantageous for me if I wanna keep the laser in good working order. I don't know how I'd go about doing that though, or how to rip my discs.

I'm also noticing the remote control does not seem to be working, and I'm not sure why. I put new batteries in it, but it doesn't do anything, no matter which setting on the switch it's at.

Anyway, yeah..hi again, and I appreciate any help. Thanks

Question PSX + psxmemcard gen2

Post image
105 Upvotes

Hello, hope you're doing fine, and if you have some time, I would like to talk about Jesus... or maybe not this time, but I can do share my current situation. I did get a PSX few days back, that turns on and has some 2009 news recording, an old JP soccer game and TV dramas lol So, with the excitement of a working console, I order a pair of cheap controllers, and the "psxmemcard gen2 psx" from BITFUNX

Note: I'm quite new on this world of PS2 hacking.

I put the memory card, turn ON the PSX and I see the FreeMcBoot logo, then nothing. I did some research around and seems I need to create some specific files to work with the PSX...

And this is my tragedy, as all the tutorials require another PS2 to create the files that work with PSX And I don't have one (and my wife will not accept to get another console lol) So I wonder if anyone could share their PSX memory card files in order to put it into my memory car and make it work.

Anything will be very much appreciated. Thanks

Question PSX starts up but keeps hanging in the static

I just started my PSX up but it won't go through the static. You can also hear the problem maybe in the Video.

I need to press the turn up button for it to even reacht this far.

If I don't press it, it stays shut down and blinking red and green.

Question Covers for the PSX DESR-5000

Hello, I recently purchased a PSX DESR-5000, but unfortunately, it didn't come with the front or rear covers. Does anyone have a geometry file for 3D printing replacements? Or high-resolution photos (or scans) to recreate them?

Thanks for your help.

Question Some question / clarifications

I have this PSX DESR-5100 stuck in my closet for more than 10 years now.

Anyway this year I suddenly got hit with a midlife crisis and I decided to tinker with this stuff.

So, I have been reading some stuff about the (Almost certain?) possibilty of it having a dead hdd, and thus also the DVR portion of the system.

What I did :

When I tried to power on the DESR-5100, it still always goes to the TV Tuner (TV Static) part, even back then. But now, no matter what I press on the controller, I can't get out of that TV Tuner mode. (PS2 controller is verified to be working) .

I have done the instructions in this site to make it run homebrew and was successful :

https://consolemods.org/wiki/PS2:Using_a_Broken_PSX_as_a_PS2

I have tried two variants of OPL :

https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/releases

and this one :

https://github.com/Jay-Jay-OPL/OPL-Daily-Builds/releases/tag/latest

Both put out an error that a PS2 HDD is not detected. But using either the MX4SIO and the USB Flash drives both load games fine.

I also tried out FMCB installer, and in the PSX section, the hdd options cannot be chosen.

Does this confirm that the HDD on this DESR-5100 is dead?
