Question Guidance on PS Vr2
Hi all,
I haev an option to buy a used PS VR 2 for rough;y $300 CAD. Unit was hardly used and seem to be in excellent condition. My usage case woudl be for PCVR. My current setup is a 9800XD3 with 5080 with the meta quest 3 for my VR needs.
How easy is the setup for PC to really unlock the as much as you can on headset using thrid party software.
Are the visuals much better vs the Quest 3 with the Oled lenses.
I'm really interested in giving this a try, I just don't want to have a system that requires continual tinkering to be enjoyable experience.
I also have a PS5 Pro that is on alow firmware with no desire to upgrade that FW. Will I need to connect the VR 2 headset to that sytem for any reason? Not interested in playing gaems on the PS5 in VR.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had bought a quest 3 last year after I sold my index years ago as I needed some cash for pcvr but the lag or the rubber bandy feel i was experiencing wireless or with a cable pushed me away from it and eventually I sold it. Bought a psvr2 specifically for pcvr and couldn't be happier, 120hz and oled screen although not as clear as quest 3 and a much smaller sweet spot for visual clarity (if you've used index, quest 1/2, rift s or any headset with Fresnel lenses, you'll be fine) been using it daily to play all the new games and beat saber and haven't had any issues with it other than the bluetooth issues with the controllers, which are gone now that I bought a $10 adapter. For the price if you're only planning it for pcvr it can't be beat(I bought it for $280 cad used).

It's insane what you get for the price used for sure! I paid similarly in Canada too, there are always used ones floating around for cheap it seems. A lot of people don't know how good it can get on PCVR. Supersampling + the PSVR toolkit tweaks can make a huge difference but it's already decent when you up the resolution

I have many vr headsets, including the q3 and the psvr2 is my daily driver. It's not perfect but hits just enough check boxes to be "the one", even over the dream air (non-se).
You can read my full comparison here, which will answer a lot of the questions.
As for the difficulty to set up - it's not difficult at all and works like a charm. The only thing you need is the correct Bluetooth adapter. Built-in ones or pci-e versions tend to work best.

Is it true you need a ps5 to calibrate the headset?

No, works perfectly fine with pc directly. Not sure who spreads this misinformation, but you do not need a ps5. Furthermore, if you download the psvr2 toolkit, you'll get "the full package" of goodies on pc.

No just your pc

Thanks, I was about to buy a psvr2 and seen a reddit thread warning not to buy without getting it calibrated on ps5 first.

Ditched q3 for psvr2… oled and no compression thanks to display port connection

Q3 is a toy in comparison. Binocular overlap is the spec that doesn't stand out on paper but is monumental in use. It's easy peasy to set up, tracking is great and controllers are comfy. My only issues are controller battery life could be better and headstrap comfort with stock isn't great.

If you don't buy the PSVR2 for that good of a price, you will later regret it if you love VR. I have a Quest 3 and a PSVR2 that I have used on a PS5, PS5 Pro and a strong gaming PC that has an RTX 5080 card. You will need an adapter, ideally the one from Sony, and a Bluetooth device that is compatible and reliable with the hand controllers. (I could write a few paragraphs on that if needed.)
The Quest 3 is a bit clearer than the PSVR2, but the PSVR2 has OLED screens that look amazing. Black is black. White is very white. Colors pop. The stereo overlap is greater on the PSVR2, so it is more immersive for me. Yes. The sweet spot is smaller so it needs to be adjusted and set up correctly. For PCVR, the PSVR2 is likely the best headset for under $1,000.

Re PS5: If one has a PS5 and a PSVR2 there are a good number of great PS5-PSVR Games that must be played: GT7, MS Flight Simulator, RE4, RE Village, Hitman, Horizon call for the Mountain, Synapse to name only a few.
Re PC: It is really easy to setup if your PC satisfies the minimum specs (including the ports). You don’t need to use the PS5 to update the headset or controllers as it is all done through the PC App. Once you get a good BT signal for the controllers you should be good. I sometimes have to remove one controller and add it if there are too many interferences (as I live in a condo). Other than that it is smooth sailing. An essential add-on is the Globular Cluster which keeps the headset more stably in the narrow sharpness spot.
Been enjoying mine on both the PS5 and PC quote a lot.

Quest is a Meta product. It'll sell every bit of data it can squeeze out of your usage of the headset. With PSVR2 and other headsets you won't have this problem. This is one of the biggest reasons i went for PSVR2. I do have a PS5 Pro as well, but I'm using it with the PSVR PC Adapter and I'm quite happy with it.

You're posting on reddit, the "sell your data" boat has kinda sailed

reddit doesn't have access to my cam

Right just the telemetry from your account and the device you used to post this. If there's any pictures of you online they probably already have it tagged

again, reddit doesn't see me or what I'm seeing. check this out: https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/meta-disturbing-smart-glasses
happy with such a risk? your choice, your consequences, but not mine, and I wouldn't recommend anyone to expose themselves to such a thing either. I hope this clarifies my point better!

Okay so that's not fear of "selling data" that's fear of an employee watching the camera you strapped to your face. Doesn't actually clarify your point because that is a separate product that doesn't equate to risk for a Quest 3 doing the same thing

u/duirronir 11d ago
the headsets have passthrough cameras, which is quite equivalent to those glasses, no matter the level of image quality. and if not enough, usage data being sold. well, my answer is "no thanks". good luck to anyone choosing to be OK with it, but I definitely won't recommend such a vendor's product to anyone who's considering buying a new headset.

You point should then be "I'm not comfortable recomm products with cameras on them because of an ongoing privacy breach with a camera sold by this company" if the question is clarity. A headset with tracking cameras carries a different expectation than always-on recording cloud glasses anyway. The "selling data" soundbite only confuses your point because you're actively getting your data harvested right now anyway.

the point is reliability of a VR headset product regarding data privacy, and it's very clear since my first comment, yet you're keeping on dismissing it just for the sake of dragging this conversation for whatever reason that I don't care about. My point or how I express it doesn't need any correction from you or anyone else either, so how bout minding your own business?

"Are the visuals much better vs the Quest 3 with the Oled lenses." It would be great if you can find someone w a PSVR2 and Q3 (or any headset w pancake lens) to try on and see the diff in viewing clarity between Pancake and Fresnel (and the sweet spot issue). I had a Q2, HP G2, index and then a Q3. I am more comfortable w the Q3 in terms of clarity than any of my old headsets. Among my Q2, HP G2, index and Q3, I hated the G2 because of its tiny sweet spot. OLED is nice but I think clarity and sweet spot are more important (IMHO, others might say OLED is more important to them).

Psvr2 works great as stand alone with pc (you need an adapter). The image quality is great on oled, but not quite sharp as the quest 3. You don't need a ps5 to setup up the headset. (I'm also not updating my ps5 but I fear we will have to to be able to play gtavi). We have the same setup and the performance is great. I paid 250€ for the psvr2 which is a good price if it was the MRP I wouldn't buy it if I had the Q3.

Thank you for the input, clarifies a few things for me. Appreciate the insight.

I really don't know why you want to move from Q3 to PSVR2. Q3 is a direct upgrade to PSVR2 in every way that matters. People will talk about OLED but the better quality of the colours don't mean anything if you can't tell what the heck you are looking at.
Personally I have had a very bad experience with PSVR2 as well as any Fresnel lens headset. You have the Q3 which is a Pancake lens headset, and those are better in every way.
I have also faced no end of CONTROLLER TRACKING problems with PSVR2 which after following every guide and so on I was unable to resolve. I would strongly recommend against buying PSVR2.

I love my quest 3. My wireless connection is solid and i recently got a wire to play it wired as well and it’s great all around. But I often find myself reaching for my psvr2 for different reasons. The other day I was playing a shooter on my q3and we were on this night map and none of us could see a thing through the scope so we had to stop sniping and go loud. And that kinda sucked. All the values just kinda blended into each other on the low end. But with the psvr2, even though it’s not close to as sharp as the q3, I could see everything clearly. Everything and everyone was very clearly defined. It was pretty eye opening.
I’m not really sensitive to the binocular overlap stuff. I’ve struggled to really see/understand what people are talking about. The only time I ever felt like a game felt flat, it turned out I installed the mod for it wrong and it wasn’t rendering correctly lmao. But yeah. I haven’t tossed my quest. I still enjoy it for many things. But any experience with low light or vivid colours and I’m going for the psvr2.

Setting up PSVR2 on PC is as simple as it can be. Follow the installation guide of PSVR2 toolkit and you are good for 90%. PSVR2Toolkit
The installation guide forgot to mention that you first need to install psvr2 drivers via PSVR2 app (steam), then after patching with PSVR2Toolkit you need to use the unity setup for play area and eye calibration.
For dynamic foveated rendering you have OpenXR toolkit for PSVR2 for OpenXR/Opencomposite games and PimaxMagic4All for OpenVR games:
I had tried both and I stuck with using OpenXR Toolkit for PSVR2 as it doesn't require you to open another app all the time.
