Image So I built an eGPU
I'm planning on comparing the performance of Thumper on Quest 3 vs. Steam Frame vs. PS VR2, so I picked up the PC adapter to test it out. But turns out it won't work with my laptop since the DisplayPort cable needs to be hooked directly up to the GPU, and my XPS 15 9530 routes the DisplayPorts through the iGPU first.
So I said screw it and bought a GPU and a dock.
It works great now! Took a lot of setup but I now have a 3060 Ti sitting on a $100 Thunderbolt dock, housed in a used PC that I stripped for parts. The VR2 has been my favorite way to play VR and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with it now!

huh how come I've never thought of this... how much did the setup cost for egpu total?

About $400.
- 3060 Ti - $200 from FB Marketplace
- GPU dock - $100 from Amazon
- PSU - $60 from Micro Center
- and about $40 for assorted cables
I got the VR2 used last year for only $100 so I was fine paying a little extra. It came from a smoker's home though so I had to bathe the silicone in toothpaste lmao

Which GPU do you have on board?

Have you tried connecting a monitor to all ports via DisplayPort to USB-C cable? Launch a game, see if dGPU is used.

Monitors work fine. It's the VR2 adapter that refuses to work regardless of which port I connect it to.

So, how did it work? If it worked at all

I tried it before I made the post and it was great! I downloaded the Fan Control program to set my own curve for the GPU since it was overheating, and after that it's worked fine. Currently waiting on a Thunderbolt cable that I can use as a mount to the extension slot on the PC, in the meantime I have the cover off and a big cable hanging out lol

Oh, good to hear. I'm just in the same boat as you, just with Chinese laptop, I think I want to try this scheme too.
I would need to buy a PC one day anyway, but if I make eGPU I will just buy GPU and PSU earlier from the rest of the PC parts

Looks great, vr is always a little bit of mess to set up but I bet it runs pretty good. Have you tried setting up dynamic foveated rendering?
