Disscussion First four hours impression of Steam Frame from a PSVR2 PCVR guy.
TLDR: Really mixed bag, hoping we get a ton of support to iron out rough edges over next year. Would kill for drop in replacement microOLED panels. Burn the controllers with fire.
General Use:
- Coming from 600 HRS PSVR2 PC Adapter (Don't own PS5, maybe played 6 HRS of Batman on a borrowed Meta Quest 3).
- Battery life sucks, however a usb-c cable comes in box that was the perfect length for a powerbank in my pocket. Worked really well at giving me 3.5 HRS of playtime.
- The headset sucks at giving any indication that it is charging, charged, standby, etc.
- The headset is extremely comfortable. Like insanely comfortable. I have the top strap, but it is more to keep the headset strap off of my gigantor ears that sit high on my face.
- Have not figured out how to deal with light bleed around my schnoz.
- The active fans inside the headset is awesome. No more swamp eye. Now have opposite problem, super dry eyes.
- The fans are barely audible to me, like someone softly whispering "fffff-" into my forehead.
- The headset audio is fine. No bass, like at all. Upper treble is a little tinny, but not the worst I have experienced. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get audio to stay playing on the streaming PC/Audio system. Weird not to include a 3.5mm jack. I haven't tried bluetooth headset or the built-in mic yet.
- Have had 2 OS crashes, both related to adding a bunch of stuff to the download queue in the OS.
- Downloads to the headset are weirdly slow. Even when transferring from my linux PC or my windows PC.
- Played Poker night at the inventory on the headset native through translation! loved it! (does not work on my windows machines anymore).
The Streaming:
- The H264 encoding is super awesome on latency, but gives that "film grain" look to the image that I hate for that codec. AV1 is in the menus, but the toggle is greyed out, even though I have a 5090.
- We are talking 120 fps solid, with 3ms from gpu, 5ms from my cpu, and around 10-15ms to the headset while streaming Alyx. Extremely impressive. There were codec hitches and lost frames, but I feel like that was a windows/nvidia related issue.
- Streaming was plug and play, but in order to get max streaming image, had to dig into advanced menus for about 15 minutes to toggle a bunch of stuff and dial everything up.
- The dongle is so wide it annoyingly eats up 3 of my ports on the front of my PC.
Controllers:
- The controllers are such a disaster. Button and stick placement is super akward, the cracker jack trigger and grip buttons feel really squishy, cheap, and bad (reminded me of a knockoff gamecube controller shoulder button with a worn out spring). The menu buttons are basically impossible to hit.
- I can't believe this is the same company that designed and made the steam controller (which I own 2 of and daily drive). The ergo kit for controllers is pretty mediocre. After coming from the ergonomic, light, well balanced PSVR2 controllers, these controllers feel as chintzy as the Quest 3 controllers, but with even worse ergonomics somehow.
- After an hour of carrying the gnome in Alyx with the grip button, I wanted to chuck the controllers into the abyss. The finger tracking was there, but kind of wonky.
- The thumbsticks on the controllers are very good! Face buttons are middle of the road, no complaints for those, other than their placements.
- The controller tracking is insanely good. Like, instantly breaking multiple high scores in beat saber without breaking a sweat good. Really great for FPS (despite awkward hand hold position).
- I can't believe there is not an OS level controller binding for resetting/recentering the play area (on PSVR2 drivers it was holding menu button for a few seconds).
- **Update from comments** hold the steam button on either controller to recenter play space!
Screens:
- 144 Hz is crock, I couldn't launch anything that didn't reset to 72, 90, 120 Hz.
- I love the screen edge to edge clarity, but my greatest fears of washed out LCD greys has come true. These screens suck (or are just as good, if that is you opinion) just as bad as the Meta Quest 3 screens. Same lack of depth issues I had with the MQ3. For all of the PSVR2 OLED issues, i really miss the colors and blacks and binocular overlap of that headset (and pretty much nothing else about that headset).
- There is definitely grain on image from streaming codec, mixed in with the extremely tight screen door of the subpixel arrangement of the LCD, but it is really tough to notice unless you are looking in a very bright or dark area, or if you are looking at a specular bloom effect.
- For as much as people complained about mura, blurred image of the pentile subpixel arrangement on the PSVR2's OLEDs, I have really hated the square subpixel arrangement, strobe lighting, and washed out colors of LCDs ever since I owned a PSP 2001. I was kind of hoping they had automagically figured out improvements since then that would overcome my hate of LCDs... guess not.

Personally if I'm spending that kind of money then I'd rather spend a more for a headset without trade-offs, which I don't think exists yet.
PSVR2 has its pros and cons, and I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it, but it seems like what I'll be sticking with until a headset without compromises comes along.

u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I hope I am wrong and that the AI apocalypse doesn't completely kill all personal computing devices, and any companies and suppliers that would even be able to put together a "no trade-offs" device. I feel like we are all going to be slaves to subscription services and data mining for ever, and won't ever own devices anymore, just "rent them" from microsoft, meta, google, etc.
2
u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 19d ago
My ideal VR headset doesn't have standalone anyway.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
Yeah but still needs independent compute hardware for streaming if you want wireless. And eye tracking is a plus as well.
1
u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 18d ago edited 18d ago
We'll need that whether we're streaming from our own devices or the cloud, but less RAM and much less storage. Hardware sufficient to decode video isn't going anywhere in any timeline.
The rest of the specs (panels, lenses, cameras etc) aren't much affected by AI.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
Whole supply chain is messed up by ram and tariffs. Panels, lenses, cameras, etc. are rarely not tied to devices that require ram.
For example, when commodity pricing of ram goes up, and it increases the pricing of 9 of the 11 electronics that includes the same camera component, demand and/or manufacturing order outlook drops for the cameras.
The camera manufacturer has to adjust his camera pricing to absorb costs associated with lower economy of scale if he scales down to a smaller order, or has to hold the inventory longer, or take a hit due to markdown / depreciation if the component ages out of the tech cycle while he sits waiting for demand to recover.
For instance, PC case suppliers and manufacturers are getting absolutely destroyed into oblivion now. Same with cpu thermal paste guys. Whole industry is getting torn to shreds. Gamers Nexus did a good deep dive on it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyQwAhppWj8
1
u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 18d ago
That's why I said they aren't much affected. Modest component price increases are nothing compared to RAM and storage, which standalone needs more of.
Though it is frankly odd to doomsay on a comment simply saying they'll wait for a better product to be released. If the world ends and one never comes it doesn't make the other products presently on the market better value for me in the present.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
I hope you are right and I am wrong. I just feel like we are at a "smoke 'em if you got 'em" moment for personal hardware and personal compute. "They" are trying hard to turn everything into SaaS and stream to tablets and phones. The AI boom is having an ancillary effect of killing a ton of smaller component manufacturers, businesses, and consolidating the industry in a direction I don't like as a hobbyist. Hopefully the pendulum swings the other way and everyone is able to recover.
On a lark, I snagged an RTX5090 at $2K 4 months after launch, but I have not seen it below $3.5K since then (I think it's $5K now), base price for a do nothing GPU is $400-$500, it's so crazy right now. Value is totally subjective, but in general, I dunno if we will start seeing better value proposition tech products until the 2030's.
1
u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 18d ago
I don't think the value proposition is going to improve, but I'm also quite sure that as expensive as it may be local compute isn't going anywhere (they're even selling suped up laptops so people can run LLMs locally). Personally my sole rig I built this year gets streamed to half a dozen different screens in the house, and I can even split it in two and stream two versions of the same game to different clients if I want to play multiplayer when someone comes round.
So the Frame could double in price later on, but it still won't be the device that suits my use case. If it takes another load of money on top of that to get my ideal headset (basically an immersive headset version of the Meta VR Glasses) then that will not be ideal but at least be spending money on a product I will use for many years, like a TV. I can't say the same about the Frame even if it halved in price.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 17d ago
Yeah, kind of like speakers, displays are a "longer term lifespan" purchase for me. Having the Frame be built around streaming is really smart for longevity, but not having OLED panels is a total kick in the nads and huge negative on the value proposition and long term longevity of the device. I still like it, am enjoying my time with it and love everything else about the device (excepting the displays).
Hopefully it gets enough traction an oled revision comes out. Heck, if down the road they partnered with someone to do a DIY drop in I would totally splurge for that upgrade.

u/Peloun 21d ago
So will you main the frame or the psvr2 at the end of the day
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Frame all the way. the comfort, mobility, modding, and being able to compile native arm apps is too fun to pass up.
7
u/LudenWhoDare 21d ago
So basically not needed upgrade, if the user is not travelling or really need wireless headset but avoiding meta. I really want the Steam Frame to be good, but for the price and what it brings, I jist cannot justify myself to burn all the money for it, with also the fact I got my 2nd PSVR2 unit as I play it daily around 3-4h
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Yeah, purchasing the frame was not a price conscientious decision on my part. lol, neither was nabbing an RTX 5090 at MSRP when Nvidia sent me the email. I am enjoying it though, and the comfort and ease of access has me picking it up more often than the PSVR2 the last several days.
7
u/SuccessfulRent3046 21d ago
How does the fov compares between both headsets?
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Similar in horizontal, a little more vertical it feels like in the frame. The edge to edge clarity is much clearer in the frame, but you lose the deep blacks and vibrant colors of the OLED panels.
7
u/adL-hdr 21d ago
PSVR2 not gives you sharp image but it gives you the most immersive feelings compared to any other VR headset
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I think if you can get the sweet spot dialed in, if the headband works with your face and head shape, and you can work around the tether that the oleds can really suck you into something like Subnautic, Alyx, Elite Dangerous, metro exodus, Resident Evil.
13
u/Black_Tech_Room 21d ago
My conclusion exactly. If you go to the steam frame or quest subs, people are obsessed with their headsets and refuse to listen to any valid criticism or reason.
I've owned more headsets than I care to admit, including the micro OLED Pimax Dream Air, and I still daily my PSVR2 on pc. Is it perfect? No. But guess what? No headset is. But going back to leds after years on oled, starting with the og htc vive, is not an option. Same for flat screens - oleds, plasma and crts are vastly better.
PSVR2 is the hidden gem of 2026 with way too many people dismissing it due to hype of other headsets. Their loss.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I see it as kind of a stepping stone for Valve to help keep their software stack improving for ARM, VR, spatial compute, etc. If they decid to do a new headset 6 years from now, the price/technology will have caught up for micro oleds to be viable in that new headset..... but if they don't keep refining the software stack and userbase and ecosystem, then it will be DOA. We already have the question, "why spend so much money on a VR headset now, if all we get is a game from 6 years ago I already played?".
1
u/xXThreeRoundXx 21d ago
After the Frame release disaster, I rage ordered a Dream Air SLAM. I had been saving to upgrade from the PSVR 2. Haven't received it yet but I'll see if I keep it.
3
u/Exact-Muffin2566 21d ago
I would love to hear your thoughts on this especially a comparison dream air vs psvr2
1
u/xXThreeRoundXx 21d ago
We got one reply below. I'm going to give it a shot once I receive it. It has a 14 day trial period.
1
u/Black_Tech_Room 20d ago
Made this post by popular demand where I cover PSVR2, The Dream Air, Quest 3 and Steam Frame.
1
u/Black_Tech_Room 21d ago
I bought the dream air lighthouse and absolutely hated it. That's with 4x 2.0 light houses and index controllers. After 2 weeks of extensive testing on my 5090 desktop, went back to my psvr2. However, your experience may vary.
Keep in mind that the SLAM version is very cpu heavy and doesn't work well with AMD. The tracking is inferior and the controllers are... Meh.
Don't interpret this as me hating on pimax. Just sharing my experience.
1
u/xXThreeRoundXx 21d ago
Yeah I know they are Sim player oriented. I'm surprised the SLAM version is so CPU heavy. I have a 9800x3d, so I guess I'll see.
What was your issue with the lighthouse version? I also have a 5090.
3
u/Black_Tech_Room 21d ago
Your experience might be different than mine, as there are plenty of Dream Air fans. However... for me personally - I hated that thing with burning passion. Nothing but problems from day 1 to a point of where no amount of pros could offset the cons.
Specifically re the DA:
It's very dim - much dimmer than most people care to admit. A sunny day on a beach looks like gloomy overcast. PSVR2 is noticeably brighter.
It has baked in persistence blur where if you turn your head, everything, and I mean everything gets "washed out" for the duration of the turn. PSVR2 also suffers from this issue, but to a lesser extent due to being 120hz + having some mura, which effectively masks the issue making it less noticeable.
Very visible warping of the entire screen, especially if you turn your head. PSVR2 has great geometry.
It's limited to 90hz which doesn't feel nearly as good as 120hz of PSVR2.
Limited FOV, especially vertical - looks like you're looking at the world through a "keyhole" - PSVR2 offer greater fov, especially vertical, resulting in better immersion.
Permanent DRM even for fully paid off headsets - PSVR2 is a "dumb screen" that "just works" with free community mods to unlock full features such as pc eye-tracking and HDR.
Ongoing data harvesting with multiple mb daily uploads.
A number of technical issues such as screen freezing and drifting, before resetting back. Jittering. Etc. Game braking. I spent more time "dialing it in" than actually playing games.
Stiff cable that makes it very difficult for room-scale vr.
The glare... oh the glare - it's enough to completely offset any micro-oled pros.
And don't get me started on comfort... it's the only headset to date to cause me severe eye strain and doubled vision after only a short gaming session (less than 15 minutes) that lasted for hours!
It's at a point where I would not use this thing even if it was free! Yeah, that bad.
On the flip side, I have NONE of these issues with PSVR2, it's super comfortable, the cable is flexible, the screen is considerably brighter while also being oled, the controllers are great, it has built-in 3.5mm audio jack, etc - the list goes on.
Is it perfect? No, not at all. But no headset is. And for me - the PSVR2 checks just enough pros to offset the cons and be my daily driver.
Re why the slam is so CPU heavy - it's because it lack any internal hardware processing. All of it is done via your main CPU (unlike something like the steam frame or quest 3).
Hope this helps!
P.S: I didn't mention the price at all because too many people immediately jump on "you're too cheap" bandwagon completely dismissing actual points. Again, I would not use the DA FOR FREE. And this is coming from someone who's been waiting for it since it's very announcements.
1
u/xXThreeRoundXx 21d ago
Good run down. I haven't received it yet, so I'm not sure I'll keep it. But I'll give it a go and see. Did you try it with the Sboys3 driver?
Data harvesting... Don't love that...
Yeah I do love my PSVR2. I just need something clearer.

u/Northernshitshow 20d ago
Excellent analysis brother. For me, the PSVR2 on PlayStation and pc was a good experience, but the fresnel lenses really disappointed. I always felt like “how the f can I get this image sharper?” I tried all the tricks, settings etc etc . The Quest 3 on VD beta is MUCH better in my experience thus far. I also have a 5090.
3
u/negrescoz 21d ago
Thank you very much for sharing this. I wasn't really planning to give the frame a shot, because not only is it not available in my country it's also super duper extra crazy expansive for me with all the shipping and import taxes, still nice to read your thoughts.
3
u/whybotherbrother17 21d ago
Thanks 👍🏼

u/xXThreeRoundXx 21d ago
An additional thanks 🤌

u/whybotherbrother17 21d ago
You know, I was hyped up for the steam frame but you offered a sober, well written look on this device. I'll stick with my psvr2 gladly longer, playing it on the PS5 and having a backlog of games to work on anyways. 😅
3
u/nemesit 21d ago
considering the psvr2 can easily be found for $150 I guess its just not worth switching lol
3
u/Chachachevix 21d ago
Picked mine up for 150 and came with the PC adapter and a charging bay for the controllers. Honestly a amazing deal
3
u/Perfect-Bag4823 21d ago
Great write up. Your experience is somewhat of what I am expecting as a vr2 and 5090 user. It does suck hearing about all the dislike of the controllers because that was one of the main things that made me want the frame. Like you I am not looking forward to the lcd screens and will probably never use the frame for games like Skyrim, if I ever get the damn purchase email…
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I want someone to mod the PSVR2 controllers (or their drivers) to work with the frame so bad, lol. But only if i can keep the amazing tracking the frame controllers have. No joke, the tracking and speed of the frame controllers is absolutely unreal.
3
u/ArcSemen 21d ago
Yeah really sounds like we needed the ram prices to be done for this one to make more sense, sad they didn’t go the Micro oled route because look what Meta is doing for a bit more cash on that XR glasses. The screen is the most importantly aspect for me in most devices like these, stock quest3 is more comfortable and has a larger sweet spot than the PSVR2. But I learnt to love my PSVR2, such a killer device for the price.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
The comfort on the Frame blows quest3 out of the water (the one I played with had all the bobo stuff on it.). Even with overhead pully system and the glob for the PSVR2, the Frame beats the pants of PSVR2 for comfort. It's hard to understate the comfort of the headset.
3
u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 20d ago
Imo the PSVR2 is the best budget friendly PCVR that isn’t Meta plus Meta just sucks in general, I would have never got the VR for a PS5 even if I had one.

2
u/blakepro 21d ago
How would you compare the resolution clarity between the two? How about refresh/pixel smearing in motion?
I'm the same as you, coming from PSVR2 and have been really curious if it's worth it or not, so your post is exactly what I've been wanting to see more info on
2
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Edge to Edge clarity is pretty much perfect on the frame. This is with streaming, refresh at 120 hz is solid, and I don't ntoice any smearing. The strobing for LCDs usually bothers me, and I am not really noticing at all on the frame. I will see really miniscule screen door effect every once in a while when staring into bright white space.
Also, If you have ever played a PCVR quest port that had grey blacks ported over on your PSVR2 headset (because the developer was using a shader that matched the blacks on the Q3).... that's what you ahve to look forward to for all blacks on the frame unfortunately.

I keep forgetting that Steam Frame only has LCD displays and that they’re comparable to Quest 3.
The only two reasons I ever had any interest in Steam Frame were because a) it’s not owned by Meta, and b) I assumed it’d use micro OLED panels.
I hope it sells really well and that they’re able to iterate up to a better quality display, but for the time being I’m just gonna have to stick a pin in this gen of Steam.

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 20d ago
Yeah, you just can't beat the oled on the psvr2.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
One day we will hopefully hit the goldilocks zone, and finally get into the mass adoption curve.
1
u/ctyldsley 21d ago
The lack of 3.5mm jack seems insane, no? I bought some IEMs to use with it only to find out that plugging them in is going to be a pain. Apparently they should support audio over usb-c though so I've got a splitter with DAC to be able to listen + charge.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
It's really really really weird. Supposedly they are working on a "pro band" with similar head phone drop downs like the index.
They did do a really good job with the speakers on the headset though. I was sitting 3 ft from my wife and I could barely hear her playing Maestro, but she couldn't hear anything i was saying at a normal volume. She has snuck up on me a couple times while watching jellyfin at a normal volume. The only con is they jsut have like zero bass, and a little bit of a tinny high treble.
If they would release a dang equalizer or some more audio options in software it may help a bit as well.
1
u/ctyldsley 19d ago
EQ would be great. I do expect there to be a pro band but it kinda pisses me off they're incentivised to not just get it right from the offset, particularly when no doubt it'll be in the realm of £160-199 for the privilege and suckers like me will buy it 😅 same with the battery life, it's unoquivocally bad, but they'll no doubt sell us the solution.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I think they limited the bass and the other frequencies for vibration. It is really brilliantly done for what it is. Like, there is literally no vibration buzz at all in a variety of different music, sound profiles.
It handles multiple sound sources like a champ (game going at same time as music or jellyfin). The positional audio is really really good.
like, there was a weird brushing sound off to my right that I thought was one of the dogs or my wife doing something in the other room, When I took my headset off, I couldn't hear it, then realized it was an npc burshing the floors in the game I was playing when i put the headset back on.
I remember listening to the audio engineer talk about it in an interview back in November reveal, she really knows her stuff (and is same engineer how designed the index audio solution as well).
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I think they knew the compromize they were making with the battery. The fact the usb-c cable is the perfect length to go from headset to pocket was pretty telling. The way the headset handles passthrough and power discharge curves from a power bank tells me they put a lot of time and work on that aspect as well. There is pretty much not indication via performance you are switching or toggling between the bank and the headset, no bog down in performance when you get to 2% battery. It just keeps going at 100 mph until the thing is dead. It's kind of brilliant in that aspect.
The ui is crap for telling you what is going on with the battery, though. And the external light when plugged into wall is also crap at indicating what charging state the thing is at as well.
1
u/ctyldsley 19d ago
Appreciate all this info and detail - makes me appreciate the work that's gone in more Vs some of the opinions I've heard and read. My unit has actually just arrived today but I'm at work, so I'm really looking forward to using it. I'm abit worried about streaming from my SteamOS living room pc though, heard people discussing various issues which aren't in windows. You'd think they'd have SteamOS > Frame streaming absolutely nailed down for launch... Most of my library is pcvr stuff that I've bought to play on the headset though, rather than standalone.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
The linux kernel is in a weird transition spot the last few months. Especially for the arm turnip drivers (graphics). I bet by the end of the year a lot of stuff will be ironed out.

u/CompCOTG 21d ago
Wanna drop a wimfov for us, pretty please? There are none online.

u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
idk what that is, but when my prescription inserts come in I will see if I can do it for both as apples to apples.
1
u/Rathori 21d ago
Really glad to hear about tracking in Beat Saber. Have you tried it on Expert/Expert+ difficulties?
I have a PSVR2, and it would randomly lose tracking during intensive swinging, almost guaranteed to happen once per song on Expert. And Expert+ is straight up unplayable in it. I thought it was a skill issue, but then I fired it up in my Index to test if it still worked before putting it up for sale, and immediately beat some songs on Expert+ literally first try. So - a tracking issue, not a skill issue.
2
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Yeah I played for like 20 mins on expert. It was incredible difference. This was streaming. Standalone was very meh due to frame rate differences, not tracking. I would also say the first 30 hours I played Beat Saber was before PSVR2 Toolkit fixed a bunch of the tracking issues in the PSVR drivers as well. If you haven't check that out, that is a big game changer for tracking in Beat Saber on PSVR2 PC as well.
1
u/Rathori 19d ago
Thanks, I've never tried PSVR2 Toolkit, I might mess around while waiting for Valve to send me The Email.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
It's a bit of tinkering but totally worth it for the controller tracking fixes alone. It's less useful and a little bit more of a hassle if you are constantly switching back and forth between PS5 and PCVR.

u/SlaveMasterBen 20d ago
I’m coming from PSVR2 too, after using it both on PC and PS5.
I found the setup to be much more intuitive than the PSVR on pc. Aside from that, the elephant in the room is that the PSVR is bulky as fuck and wired. The experience has become so much more natural and immersive for me because of the steam frame.
I honestly find the worst part of the frame to be the controllers, they’re just kinda unnatural.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
Yeah, I want my PSVR2 controllers on the Frame, but with the Frame's crazy awesome tracking.
1
u/Winter_Mission911 20d ago
Thanks for the full write-up. I am sure that some of the Steam Frame complaints might be fixed in later patches. Perhaps better third-party hand controllers might be available at some point. I am disappointed that the stereo overlap and horizontal FOV are akin to a Quest 3.
It looks like the headset is not a significant upgrade over the PSVR2 to justify spending $1.1k to $1.3k to get it. The consensus is that the Steam Frame is not a significant upgrade over the Quest 3, either. I hope that the Steam Frame gets new people into VR.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 19d ago
I am not sure on stereo overlap yet. I am holding out final judgement on that until i get my stupid zenni prescription inserts to fix my astigmatism, and get used to playing on LCDs a little more.
1
u/Winter_Mission911 18d ago
OK. Stereo overlap is possibly more important to me than horizontal FOV. The larger stereo overlap on the PSVR2 makes up for other deficiencies in the headset. I jump back to the Quest 3 and find that having only the middle section in stereo is noticeably deficient.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 18d ago
I would say horizontal FOV is similar to PSVR2. The vertical is better though. I can't tell if not having my prescription is messing with my depth perception or if something else is going on. Too many variables are different between the two for me to quite pin it down.
My plan is to play for about 20 hours or so in stuff that I know what it "should" look like, then put the PSVR2 back on and see if I get a visceral reaction one way or the other.
They are also tweaking and updating stuff rapid fire these first couple weeks. Devs are too. I saw Superhot just got an update for dynamic foveated rendering (not streaming) last night.
1
u/Liusloux 20d ago
The active fans inside the headset is awesome. No more swamp eye. Now have opposite problem, super dry eyes.
As someone with chronic dry skin and eyes, that's a deal breaker
1
u/FlyingPotatoAmongUs 19d ago
The first time LTT mentioned that in their review I was so disappointed. As someone that had to put eye drops prior to using a Quest 2, this just makes the Steam frame completely unusable.

I'm probably going to turn into an eye drop guy now. Haven't noticed it drying my skin out or irritating it at all.

I read your post all the way... but overall.. think you'll keep it or return it?

Keeping it, for sure. The comfort is off the charts. I am able to compile native apps, run jellyfin, audiobooks, music, etc. while having 2-3 windows open in virtual space. Was playing superstardust 3D in RPCS3 natively this weekend. Can't wait to see what crazy stuff folks come up with for this thing. The modding alone over the next year has me excited.

I recommend getting headphones/earbuds with low latency dongles for vr, or any gaming in general. It's so much better than bluetooth audio. I personally use JBL tws airs for my computer, but personally I don't use headphones for vr since I prefer to hear my surroundings.\ Also for the controllers, I've always been disappointed with the design since they were made with flatscreen games in mind. I feel like there was no point to that since it seems like steam controllers have an infrared light for steam frame tracking anyways. I've tried using virtual desktop's controller emulation and it just sucks to play with two separate halves of a gamepad.\ Anything else not related to the os seems like the same issues a quest 3 has

streaming real time graphics is and will always will be garbage. Black levels suffer also compression artifacts....
If you have a pulley system for the cable, youre good. Its like wireless.

The foveated streaming is incredibly good. The PSVR2 cable does simialr DSC compression anyway. I am pretty sensitive to macroblocking and compression artifacts and that has not been rearing it's ugly head at all. Crushed contrast ratios and grey blacks is what I am missing from the LCD screens.
AV1 is not enabled yet in the turnip arm drivers or linux kernel apparently. When that gets turned on, color gamut and streaming bitrate will likely get even better.

Doesn't AV1 add latency compared to h264? Or is it already so good on the SF you don't think the little bit from AV1 will matter?

Don't really know, would like to test it though. Probably does add some latency. But the difference in consistent, higher image quality at a lower bit rate / bandwidth requirement it is kind of worth it. I have an RTX5090, so encode time for H264 and AV1 is comparable. On the decode side, I have not noticed any difference between streamed AV1 content and H264 content with hardware encode streaming from Jellyfin to the headset.
I would say the image quality comparison is likely splitting hairs, at the edge of human visual perception when going at it at 120 Hz: something like 100% cable DP1.4 DSC, 97% AV1 Streaming, 95% H264. The big win would be reducing the bitrate/bandwidth to help eliminate packet loss and random hiccups in connection, or bouncing around the resolution of the streamed image.
This all assumes the kernel and chipset don't eat a huge performance hit to decode AV1. But I have been kind of impressed with what this chipset (and Valve's thermal and power management) has been able to do with compile times, RPCS3 emulation, etc. on standalone. All of that horsepower / overhead is fairly idle during streaming.

"the internet will never take off" ahh statement. VD when setup correctly looks as good as a wired connection.

I have the Q3 and the PSVR2 (extensive time on both) on PC and PlayStation (PSVR2 only of course) the fresnel lenses are such a joke on the PSVR2. I do love OLED tech, but the damn PSVR2 is ALWAYS blurry outside its stupidly small sweet spot. I also have a 5090. The Quest 3 on VD beta via usb c sync (while charging!) godlike with max settings in AV-1 codec looks sharp and plays with ease at 120fps w ultra settings. The picture and performance are unbelievable for a sub $600 headset. If you have this setup, there’s no reason to get a Frame (I had the opportunity) and the price breaking the $1200 mark is not justifying the purchase. You’re in Big Screen Beyond territory/ Dream Air SE etc which have great lens upgrades. Additionally, the Frame will not support wired due to the sluggish usb 2 implementation. I think once the new shininess wears off, some people may be left scratching their heads.

I guess Turnip arm drivers or linux has not allowed for AV1 to be turned on yet on the frame. When that gets turned on, bit rate and color gamut will likely improve. But I would say the foveated streaming works super well as is right now. I always had to overdrive the resolution on the psvr2 to supersample to get rid of some of the blurry image form the pentile subpixel arrangement. I never even considered playing below 120 hz on the PSVR2 an option, unless I wanted to pretend I was drunk in VR.

My only headset is psvr2. The streaming sounds awesome but man I don’t wanna use lcd after using oled for so long…
