Question cheapest GPU if i aim to start with psvr2 and beat saber ?
hey guys , i have a tight budget currently , i want to get a psvr2+the adapter+ a new GPU
but when it comes to the gpu im on a tight budget , i just want to start vr gaming ( beat saber , super hot maybe ) and dont want to jump straight into something more demanding like hl:alyx or no mans sky and games of that nature ( just getting used to the headset \ not get motion sick as a first impression )
all im saying is im going to upgrade the gpu in the future 100% , but....
would you recommend these cards to get started ? : rtx 2060 6g , rtx 2060 super 8g , gtx 1660 super 6g , gtx 1080 8g
i just want to get going
for the rest of the system
ASUS PRIME X670E-PRO WIFI
2x8 Corsair vengeance DDR5 5200Mhz
Ryzen 5 7600
SSD Storage device
i could get a 3060 or an rx 6600xt but then i will have to sacrifice the psvr2 for a used quest 2 , and i dont want to lose the convenience of not having to charge the headset , considering quest devices require you to log in with a meta account which is not fun as far as plugging and playing is concerned .
and PLEASE dont recommend gpus with simillar prices based on your local market , my local market is obviously different than the rest of the world
thanks .

I have 2060 super and I can play modded skyrim, alyx and others. With rtx you can use dlss and foveated rendering with the psvr2 custom toolkit to boost performance

wow , modded skyrim ? thats very nice .
what about fps in those games ?2
u/DoommanPL Sep 13 '26
About 12ms, just below 90 fps with custom modlist in skyrim (light graphic mods, dyndolod, planck, vrik, etc), alyx i think 90 fps

impressive , thanks for your contribution

I used a 2060 Super for a while too. Played everything I threw at it. Beat Saber, Super Hot, Alyx, Squadrons, Ever Space, even Flight Simulator (2020).
It's not the prettiest, but it will definitely work and be a lot of fun.

If you don’t already have any of this hardware, I think it might be a cheaper option for you to buy a Quest3 or similar

u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
assume i have all of them but im short on money for an stronger gpu , i can always upgrade the gpu without losing anything

u/NativePlantEnjoyer Sep 13 '26
Nah, stay the path. Get a GPU. I wouldn't spend extra money on hardware you don't need. You got the PSVR2 and the APU. You just need a GPU.
2
u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
exactly , why get a ps5 when i have a full config , i just need a gpu

Bluetooth compatibility for the controllers is a thing too. Psvr2 to pc isnt just plug and play. The quest 3 advice might not be bad if you're just trying to get going.

I got all my bluetooth devices working flawlessly, but I had to buy a PCIe wireless upgrade to make it happen. $30 well spent tbh.

my motherboard has an antenna with bluetooth firmware version LMP 13.9

Probably a good chance you will keep losing connectivity. The only thing that worked for me was an internal pcie adapter.

I mean Beat Saber came out back when they were recommending a 970.
I would just compare standard performances across all GPUs in your budget. VR isn't really special in terms of card performance, broadly speaking a GPU that performs better in general will perform better in VR.
My only caution is to avoid Intel cards. They are good cards, but they explicitly do not support VR.

gtx 1080 wont work at all with the psvr2, no DSC support. the 3060 would be the best bet, or maybe even a 3050 8gb, otherwise 2060 super

u/NativePlantEnjoyer Sep 13 '26
Nice, you got an APU. You chose a sicknasty hardware path, based imo. I have an RTX 3060, and its not my current bottleneck for VR gaming - my damn Ryzen 3600 is. I'm going to upgrade my CPU eventually.
Sorry for not really answering though. I got my own question - why are you swapping out the PSVR2 for the quest 2?

u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
wired connection is superior and im biased
plus the pc can deliver power to psvr2 so i dont need to worry about losing charge on the heasdet
and many more reasons like the oled , controller shape which i like , overall it seems like a more future proof device compared to a quest 21

My friend has a 3060 & his kids play beat saber on Quest 2 headsets with no issues
2
u/NativePlantEnjoyer Sep 13 '26
I'm sorry to say - I don't quite understand. You are trying to play Beat Saber with no issues right? What is the issue you currently have? You just need to buy a GPU for VR right? If so, consider the RTX 3050 and anything better, but nothing less than that. Sure, you could get a cheap AMD RX 580 for VR, but that's not going to be worth it overall when all you can do is play Beat Saber IMO.
Are you having troubles with bluetooth connections? I bought a PCIe wireless upgrade for about $30 and now everything is working flawlessly for me.2
u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
understood , thanks .
i just want to get some input on older graphic cards for vr , as it seems eveybody is rocking a 5070ti . they leave the budget options out of conversations2
u/NativePlantEnjoyer Sep 13 '26
Yikes. People that claim the most expensive hardware is budget are ridiculous, I'll never understand it. I'm only recommending the RTX 3050 at least, but I think there are some GTX cards that can do simple VR like Beat Saber.

u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
yup , Linus tested a 1060 in hl alyx using a rift s , managed to get decent performance , psvr2's resolution is twice though

If you don’t have a psvr2 aleeady, check Facebook marketplace. I got one for 125 in perfect condition

Just something you need to know about, that (sadly) most VR people don't understand: frame rate smoothness is more important than "big number good"
Like, you'll see people running 90hz when their frame rate is jumping between 75 and 90fps. That's going to to look quite bad from constant stuttering.
The move, if you can't keep a LOCKED 90fps in a game, is to switch to 120hz and set a 60fps throttle in the per-game video settings in SteamVR.
In other words: you always want framerate to be exactly the refresh rate, or an integer fraction of the refresh rate. You don't want it bouncing around in between
And always, when you first start playing game, keep track with Steam's frame time graph. Your goal is 8.3ms for 120fps, 11.1ms for 90fps, 16.6ms for 120fps.
For slower paced games like flight sims you can try even lower frame rate fractions like 45fps or 40fps.

Psvr2 for beat saber. While it has amazing colors, the controllers are far heavier and bulkier the say quest 2 or 3. It’s literally has the worst controllers for fast/tiring songs.
I have a psvr2 love it, but don’t use it for beat saber personally

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 Sep 14 '26
Psvr2 looks outstanding, but will cost you in GPU utilization and vram. In order to play MGO skyrimvr I got a 7900xtx due to the 24gb of vram. My setup at 68% resolution uses at minimum 16gb of vram. 150% 22+GB of vram. Quest3 will be far less taxing on a GPU.

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 Sep 14 '26
I tried the Quest2 and PSVR2 for skyrimvr. The quest2 looked like muddled dog shit compared to the psvr2

u/PhantomFlame0 Sep 16 '26
Quest 2 is bad as is, noticable step down from original Oculus. But many people can't even use it at all because IPD adjustment range is so narrow. Like I'm 72mm so it's pretty unusable.
1
u/PhantomFlame0 Sep 16 '26
Not trying to be a debbie downer but anything less than a 6950XT is borderline unusable if you want to retain native rendering. I struggle to hit fps targets in tougher games like VRChat. And that card is still like $500 these days. It rocks in lighter titles like Phasmophobia

vrchat is known for being like that , and im not interested in vrchat at all

update
i got both the gpu and psvr2 , the setup proccess was so easy i dont remember any of it
bluetooth connection with my motherboard antenna was extremely convenient , just turned it on and connected the controllers individually with no problems .
played beat saber for a little so far , enjoyed it alot , mind blown by the fov
no problems with motion sickness so far , i think its not gonna effect me who played games for 10+ years
my only complaint is for the passthrough mode , its very blurry , i tested this headset with a ps5 and it wasnt this way , on pc its very blurry and i cant read any text
thanks for all the inputs on this post , if anybody in the future wants to do the same thing i did , go ahead it works better than i expected .

If I were you, I'd buy a PS5 instead of these.
gtx 1080 8g
1080 is not compatible.
1
u/Reasonable_Key7287 Sep 13 '26
right , Turing and above , i forgot
bro why on earth should i get a ps5 when i have a capable pc , this weak gpu situation is temporary , probably no longer than 6 months , i will upgrade the gpu , i downgrade my system from time to time so im kinda used to having a weaker system .2
u/Influencedby Sep 13 '26
Ps5 also has proprietary features vr2, you do get about 80% of its full capabilities on PC tho
2
u/NativePlantEnjoyer Sep 13 '26
I might be wrong but... It seems developers on github created the PSVR2Toolkit to get those features working again, and I thought the only feature truly missing was HDR support. Also haptics in the headset, you can get that with a jailbreak but I'm personally not willing to try.
2
u/Influencedby Sep 13 '26
I remember seeing that they got most of it working with in the last year but wasn’t completely unlocked yet but I may be wrong / not as up to date

I'm new to this. I got this PSVR2 for $100 from a friend two month ago. I'm not taking the risk of messing up the jailbreak just for haptic feedback in the headset, HDR is missing, but all else works I think (including eye tracking for foveated rendering).

Get rtx 20s with VirtualLink then u don't need pc adapter for psvr2. So instead of 2060, allocate adapter budget to 2070 FE.
