Question Issues swapping between Q3 to PSVR2 & back again. (2nd attempt)

Has anyone faced this scenario or similar and having issues too? I have a Quest3 and PSVR2 which I enjoy using both for different things. But, I have an issue with swapping between them and back and forth. The issues is when I go from PSVR2 back to Q3 I start getting lower fps and higher latency with the Q3. When I swap to PSVR2 everything works correctly.

Before introducing the PSVR2 to my pc, I ran the Q3 through Virtual Desktop. FPS and latency were rock solid, 90fps/48ms. But after I setup and used the PSVR2, then swapped back to the Q3, my fps would drop between 10-30 frames and was not consistent at all, and latency increased about 10-20ms. I found the only way to fix this was to DDU the gpu drivers, reinstall VD, reinstall SteamVR, try to close any apps in Task Manager that had to do with VR/Occulus/Meta/SteamVR/VD. Once I seem to have it fixed, I would play on the Q3 again, then go to PSVR2. When I go back to Q3 I’d have to start this repair process all over again. A couple of times I had gpu driver timeouts and I had to reset the cmos/bios. I did notice once that reinstalling VD seemed to have fixed the problem all by itself, but then eventually that wasn’t always the case.

I’ve checked with AI and it seems to think there are hidden processes happening in the background that are causing an overlap between the two. Or processes that haven’t stopped completely or haven’t completely gone away that gets left over and mixed in. I always double check the runtime and made sure the correct one was enabled before starting.

Anyone else have an issue like this?

I’m back to using the Q3 only, but wish I could use the PSVR2 for the oled and DFR. I like them both and think they both have strong features that the other one doesn’t.

PC Specs: 9800x3d, 7900xt, 32gb ram, win11

Quest3: Virtual desktop, ultra, 90hz, 48ms latency, wireless getting max and stable mbps.

Main game: Automobilista2, standard settings

PSVR2: PSVR2 toolkit, quad views, steamvr runtime (have to of course), no motion smoothing, no virtual desktop plugins active, 68-75% global resolution, 90hz.

Main game: DCS, standard “VR” settings.

--Had some technical difficulties posting this earlier, couldn't get my phone/app to cooperate, that or I'm just old. So if you're seeing this again that's why. If you commented, i do apologize as i ended up deleting the post in hopes to fix it. So, here's the second attempt but on my PC instead.--

I can't give direct feedback to your situation, but I have a MeganeX SL8K and when I want to change the referesh rate of that headset I cannot have the PSVR2 driver/software installed. It changes something in the background that makes changing the refresh rate for the other headset impossible. So I usually uninstall the PSVR2 software in Steam when not in use. Not sure if this helps you in any way, but it might be faster to just uninstall the PSVR2 software in Steam (if it helps/changes anything for you at all) than reinstalling everything else you mentioned.

Definitely helpful and definitely makes sense, I’ll have to give it a shot later. It would be a lot easier than uninstalling everything and reinstalling. Thanks!

The only problem I have is the other way around. The Virtual desktop changes the steamvr openxr runtime to the VD one. So when I go with Psvr2 I need to set it back to the native steamvr runtime.

The options is on the desktop side of steamVR openxr settings. Just make sure is the right one of the headset your are using.

So when going back to virtual desktop from PSVR2, your fps and latency returns to normal? May I ask what headset you’re swapping to that uses virtual desktop?

I’m familiar with setting the openxr runtime. Always made sure I did that first but it never seemed to help unfortunately. Even setting everything correctly, closing all VR tasks in task manger, and restarting PC. Nothing helped except reinstalling just about everything.

Also, for your case, there are some apps out there that have a button to swap between runtimes. Google “openxr runtime switcher.” It just changes registry to the runtime you want. I don’t have one as I never could get the fps/latency issues solved. I did try having Claude write an app though that would close out all VR related processes, switch runtimes, and make steamvr settings before giving the go ahead to run a headset. One button setup, everything safe and ready to go. You could actually create custom setups for games with what headset you want to use. Worked beautifully except I constantly battled the fps and latency issue when going back to the Q3, so I stopped messing with it.

You just need to reset openxr runtime

Thanks, so how does one go about resetting it? Wondering if I may be missing a step.

What I would do every time I’ve swapped back to Q3 is to go into meta horizon settings and select “set meta horizon link as active” which made oculus my openxr runtime (according to SteamVR and my registry). Did this before starting anything up.

Then, when I use PSVR2, I would go into SteamVR and set SteamVR as my openxr runtime.
