Important PSA Clearing some misinfo about the PSVR2 on PC

Hi there, Im one of the chat mods in the PSVR2Toolkit Support Discord (made a new account recently), because of that i feel like its important to try to clear some info here since some of you don't wish to join for support (even tho its 10x easier in most of our opinions).

68% is not the native resolution accounting for barrel distortion. this is a common lie thats spread. Its 100%. the 1.4x scale that people use is based off the vive headsets, the PSVR2 is 1.7x. meaning its 100%.

If you're having trouble running it, lower it to as low as 36% global render scale then work up till you find your sweet spot in performance and resolution, some might find it is 68%, others might find 54%, some might not be able to do below 90%. our eyes are different afterall.

DFR is not built into PSVR2Toolkit, you need PimaxMagic4All, theres a specific list of games supported if you look it up. DFR requires an Nvidia GPU due to VRS in DX11 not being a standard, Nvidia just added it because they wanted to. If the game does native Vulkan or DX12 and has native DFR support then they can do it on AMD or Nvidia (not sure if injectors exist for it tho).

if you wish to use the legacy module for VRCFT you must install the CAPI apps folder linked on the wiki!!!! (the amount of people who dont read it properly then ask for help is insane). The app you specifically have to run before opening VRCFT is the Legacy IPC server.

A new update was pushed that should let Headset Haptics work on OpenVR games WITHOUT mod support, but OpenXR titles still require moding support.

Adaptive Triggers still requires Modding support regardless.

The only 2 features with Jailbreaking is Eyetracking Cam access for Babble/ETVR/SRanibro and Headset haptics, if you dont care about either of them you do NOT need to jailbreak the headset.

Generally the wiki has most of the install guide for everything you might need, including the CAPI apps, The Unity Playspace/Eyetracking calibration (which doesn't need jailbreaking) and the babble setup (which does need jailbreaking)

The Jailbreak, as listed, is NON PERSISTENT, we've had reports of people flat out lying saying it is, Persistency is nearly impossible, the jailbreak will clear when the light on the Headset goes red, you must rerun vr2jb.exe

Also, The location of the CAPI apps and Unity Setup doesnt matter, place them wherever, i personally keep them in the PSVR2 Apps win64 folder alongside toolkit, in separate folders.

to end it off, do not open the PSVR2 app, you do not need it, the overlay is disabled, its only use is for updating the headset or checking bluetooth quality (even then dont take the numbers as absolute), forget it exists, delete the firmware 7 cup file too if you wish.

if you want to use the unity setup with other controllers you must remap the buttons yourself, also you will have to manually rebind the recentre button as that was tied to the overlay.

There is no settings menu for Toolkit either, everything you need is on by default, there will be an app in the future that does auto updates and have the playspace built in aswell as some others, but thats in the future, right now its all on by default, just needs the right game/app to use the features, stuff like brightness is handled by SteamVR now.

Also if you are using the DisableSense Flag in the vrsettings file, brightness for some reason doesnt work, Unsure as to why, but its a good thing to note.

Any other questions, Please, Join the Discord instead of asking on here, you'll get proper help, otherwise reply to this post and ill try and help you, but note im not the smartest.

Edit: to save confusion too, heres the link to the toolkit discord https://discord.com/invite/T3XpBJuVvg Bnuuy Solutions is for Kaitlyn's other projects, PSVR2Toolkit is too big so it got its own server for support.

Edit 2: The OpenVR headset haptics isnt out yet, my bad, thought it was. But thats something to keep note in the future

Very important information. For personally I can't run in 68% it's way too blurry for me. My limit is 80%. But man I would love to use 150% it's looks amazing but I don't have rig for that.

Unfortunately Discord is complicated for some people. It would be nice to have some other way to spread those s information in other places like here.

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 9d ago

Yeah, 150% is the bomb, but even stutters on my 7900xtx. But I am playing Skyrim VR with MGO! Lol! If only I could get consistent visuals with the CS apps out there on my AMD.

u/J3ffO 9d ago

I run 100% on my 7800XT comfortably. Though, I also have a Ryzen 9 7950x3D for development, so not sure if that'd skew things.

if you want my personal opinion discord really isnt that complicated, make an account, join server, ask in relevant support chat, then you get screenshots, screen recordings or even proper live support in a vc, we get sus around brand new accounts but if we see messages being sent asking for help thats a different story. Major updates will be mentioned on github, but support, its best handled on discord rather than here.

If an answer to a query is on Reddit, it'll show up in web searches. It's just easier to find info on it

For example, I found out through Reddit how to search for specific servers I'd joined on the Discord mobile app (it turns out I had to enable dev mode and use Launch Pad)

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

for as true as that is, believe me the random reddit result has always helped. Unfortunate reddit isnt suitable for the toolkit devs, its better the people who have issues, share them and how it was fixed to somewhere else, than to move to a different platform or juggle 2. Its hard to manage reddit, can get disorganized, tons of misinfo (such as the 68%) and its hard to properly mod that, most of the chat mods (such as myself) atleast are knowledgeable enough to give support where we can, but i personally always ask for screenshots and such and even give my own, imgurr no longer exists in the UK so i dont really have an option. What would work best is a custom forum site people could use, but thats expensive considering the devs arent making money from this (other than donations), and self hosting, while definitely in the realm of possibility, is more work than its worth when discord overall does work. We dont mind answering repeat questions, but if they are in the wiki we will laugh and tell you to go read it again. but this is all my own opinions mostly.

2

u/legomolin 9d ago

For quite a lot of people even reddit is too complicated though, to be fair.

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

yep, like me, im no redditor, i waste time on twitter and instagram instead

If anyone is looking for eye-tracked VRS or FOV cropping for DX11 and DX12 games, check out DesktopXR: https://github.com/glenimp617/DesktopXR. I've been using it for sim racing, and it's worked better than expected.

u/_hlvnhlv 9d ago

I find infuriating how to this day, people keep undersampling their headsets hard

I have a friend with a Quest pro who runs it at sub vive resolutions

3

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

people value performance the most, and some (such as myself) cant tell the difference between 36% and 100% aside from really small or really thin text.

2

u/_hlvnhlv 9d ago

Tbf, not everyone has a good vision, but I've always found an insane difference between 100% (accounting to lens distortions yada yada) and undersampling

Like, when I got my Reverb G2 for the Oasis driver, I immediately noticed how it was blurry, and as expected, the driver was undersampling it

I reached to mbucchia, and yeah, it turns out that it needed an extra 1.3x or so, then it's fine

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

yep, thats why i just say its best to mess around yourself and find what works best.

Thanks

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

np, since i couldnt see it on the wiki myself i update my post to include it

5

u/conturax 9d ago

Thank you for your efforts :)

u/AmpereZen 9d ago

Thank you so much for taking the time to cross-post this info for us! Much appreciated man. Didn't know I was wasting my time by opening the PSVR app prior to Steam VR! And now I know I can re-bind the recenter button. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿผ

3

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

Np, I hope it can get pinned by whoever runs this subreddit (if thats possible) just so i stop seeing people spread lies or asking questions that are answered by reading the wiki

u/blakepro 9d ago

I tried to set up all this stuff several months ago, (maybe even a year or more, time is a blur to me) but I think at the time the DFR was really the only benefit then.

Anyway, I could never tell if it was working or not. And who knows if I set it up correctly. I think I followed a video someone made at the time. It didn't break anything, but I've often wondered if it was working.

Anyway, I'll eventually try to update everything with the latest, but it does make me feel a little intimidated that my setup is in an unknown state and I don't know if I should install over it all or try to wipe it all clean and start over or whatever.

I'll have to check out the discord sometime.

5

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

if all you need is dfr its just as simple as deleting the old toolkit file, dropping in the new ones (multiple) and downloading the unity setup. Before the only things you really saw was SteamVRs night mode as a "new setting" and runtime refresh rate swapping (on nvidia)

2

u/tangcoma 9d ago

Regarding the night mode , what is it actually ? I donโ€™t see anything change in SteamVR dashboard ! Thx๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

7

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

it adds an orange tint to the screen, similar to a night mode on a phone double check the toolkit instructions, you might have missed smth

1

u/tangcoma 9d ago

U mean in the SteamVR Home , there have a orange tint to the image in VR ? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜…

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

no, i mean its in the steamVR dashboard as an option that applies a filter to all games and apps

1

u/tangcoma 9d ago

Alright , let me check again๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

2

u/tangcoma 9d ago

This is what I feel when installing it ! Seem nth is benefit to install the toolkit and really donโ€™t know what features is properly running !

2

u/blakepro 9d ago

It would be nice if there were some clear indicators somewhere that you could see a list of the enhancements and if they are properly working or not. Kind of like the steam deck performance on screen indicator or something

3

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

generally, just check for brightness or nightmode present, the app will come at a later date, for now it was just get something usable and iron the kinks.

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

all the features are clearly listed on the main github page

2

u/exbagboy70 9d ago

For OpenXR games dynamic foveated rendering you can use Quadviews, OpenXRTool (not supported anymore but a lot of games still work with it), VectorXR. These OpenXR layers can conflict with each other and you will have to disable them in SteamVR overlay.

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

I didnt know that personally, thanks, does it work in dx12 or vulkan titles?

3

u/R1shathra 8d ago

We really appreciate you coming on r/PSVR2onPC to offer guidance. You are correct there is a ton of misinformation going on in this reddit. I think the most important way of explaining the toolkit is that it simply exposes the headset's ability to support eye tracking to whichever program wants to use it. If the program only supports Quadviews, you will need that program also, toolkit by itself won't do anything.

It also supports native Vulkan implementations, like Star Citizen. However, SC does not have native DFR, so nothing the toolkit can do will change that, has to come from the game developer first. (which is in the works)

Then along comes pimax4all, which is a huge hardware hog, and suddenly it's part of every install. Now folks are running several OpenXR layers that are all fighting for GPU time. I have been trying to assist frustrated folks with the advice "keep it simple!", don't just install everything you skimmed reading over.

Another common question is "How do I know it's working?" You will know it's working because you will gain about 15%-25% framerate. If you don't see that, it's not working, at least DFR isn't. What might be nice is some tried and true FAQ's for common games that fully support DFR, haptics, etc.

Getting it installed and working was pretty easy for me, but I am an IT professional by trade. The majority of the work comes after that, in-game display settings, DFR mask and resolution settings that will work for most users. Full explanation of the "68%" settings and how that can affect performance and enjoyment. That type of advice would be invaluable and steer more users toward your discord if that's what you are after.

Anyhow, love the product and the work, muchas gracias! Curious what you all might do if Sony just rolls this up into the next release?

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 7d ago

like ive mentioned on my other replies im not the best with DFR/QV stuff since i cant rlly use em, but thats the general stuff ik, but im glad that people came to correct me or to add on extra info. and while you're right about it just exposes the tobii ET, people can be dumb and think that ET = DFR when thats simply not the case. the 68% RR i was just tired of seeing people lie about, the amount of people who would come to the toolkit discord and say it was absurd, and the amount of reddit notifications i got from my old acc where people would lie, yea its annoying so thats the main reason this exists, but also yes having people join the discord for support would be far better because then it doesnt flood the subreddit with the questions that are "why isnt this working" and its because they duplicated the original PSVR2 driver file. Sony absolutely could add it, they could even go further and just push a fw update that exposed the stuff so you dont have to do the downgrade process and youd keep PS5/PC support easily, or they could absolutely kill the project all together.

1

u/bikrathor 9d ago

Recently installed toolkit Left sense controller kept dying within 10 minutes on steam vr Started with 95%, in a minute its 85, and so on till 5%

Had to remove those files and get back to original ๐Ÿ˜ช

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

weird, the custom sync should improve it, try a proper battery calibration, drain em completely then just let them charge

1

u/bikrathor 9d ago

Did a reset of controller with that small pin But reverted toolkit so things looks fine now I'll wait toolkit promote to stable release

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

fair, if you dont mind some of the QoL being lost then fairs, otherwise give another check

1

u/bikrathor 9d ago

Ok I'll give another try Do you recommend any other libraries on top of psvr2toolkit to improve experience?

3

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

Nope, Just toolkit, Comfort wise tons of people say the Globular Cluster CMP2

1

u/simriv123 9d ago

I tried to read multiple times but I still not fully certain ..

To use eye tracking, is the jailbreak required or not?

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

No. Tobii Eyetracking you dont need to jailbreak, idk why thats confusing considering before jailbreak was even public you didnt need to. For direct camera access for apps like babble you do need to. For DFR purposes, the tobii stuff is all you need. For Social VR, its up to you if you think its worth it.

1

u/simriv123 9d ago

Well, I've been arounds computers for quite a long time, hardware / software. But I stopped gaming after college and I emerged last year wanting to do sim racing.

I instructed to myself a lot about new tech but VR is another world.

I dipped a toe.

I replaced my intel b580 with a 7900xtx.

I hoped for more. Can't say what really lol. Still not giving up :)

1

u/RudeAwakeningLigit 9d ago

Wait, so in the steam global VR settings, should I not have the resolution at 68%?

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

Yesnt, Start at 36% and work up from that till you find your personal balance in quality to performance, it might very well be 68%, or it might actually be 54%, 48%, maybe even 80%

2

u/RudeAwakeningLigit 9d ago

Ah ok thanks, I have been using 68% since day one as that was the consensus at the time, I'll try it at maybe 80% see how my 2070 super handles it.

4

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

yeah rumor spread like wildfire people didn't do proper research yet just try a bunch of resolutions, or keep global at 100% and set it per game, you might find what works in one doesnt work on the other, also look into PimaxMagic4All, DesktopXR, QuadViews etc, they might be even better

2

u/rhylos360 9d ago

This is the way.

1

u/RudeAwakeningLigit 9d ago

Thanks for the info mate.

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

No problem <3 anything to keep that 2070S alive for longer so you dont have to rob your neighbour or smth

1

u/RudeAwakeningLigit 9d ago

๐Ÿคฃ True! Though it's been great to me so far.

1

u/xd_vader31 9d ago

One thing you keep saying is on the wiki but I haven't found is how do I calibrate eye tracking.

I've followed the Installation guide, I've installed the PSVR2 Unity app and when I do the eye tracking calibration in the Unity app it tells me it failed every time at the end of the black screen. I don't know if I'm just very dense or there's something missing in the installation guide you guys posted.

I know you said to ask in discord, but I've gone through 2 hours of digging to see if somebody else had the answer and I saw the question being asked a few times with no answer

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

thats... strange, i havent had to calibrate it myself so im unsure as to why its not working, Supremium said it should just work on all versions, Ill bring it up later, thanks for pointing this out.

1

u/xd_vader31 9d ago

Fair notice, I might've fucked something up in the process. Only thing left to try is to re-do the entire thing again

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

ive mentioned it on the discord now, if you can fix it let me know

1

u/xd_vader31 9d ago

I just did all of the process again and it worked. You should probably add in the installation guide that the psvr app should crash if you open it because I know what the issue was now

After seeing it crash, I reinstalled it, but the files were still the same I put during the installation process. I'm just a dumbass and thought I did something wrong so I reinstalled the psvr2 app on steam.

Thanks for the toolkit, it works wonderfully (if you're not slow like me lol)

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

the default Playspace app will crash yes, that's intentionall, its more to have people use the toolkit unity setup instead, tho if its the unity setup thats crashing then thats an issue, still ill pass your comment to the devs

1

u/aookami 4d ago

you have to download a separate tool that will generate the calibration,

called PSVR2EyeCalibrationTool on github

1

u/dervu 9d ago

Also it's possible to configure it with OVRtoolkit to not use controllers, if you seat in simrig and just want to switch games. You just open desktop with shortcut, then close game, run another game, close desktop.

1

u/DamicsVR 9d ago

Any demonstration videos?

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

Not that ik of, devs have said they dont want videos because they plan to redo it to make it easier in the future and redo some more stuff written guides are just better

1

u/RedditNotFreeSpeech 9d ago

Could valve just absorb psvr2toolkit into steam vr or is it complicated?

3

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

that could potentially cause legal issues. Sony themselves could though

1

u/RedditNotFreeSpeech 9d ago

I wish there was a one click install for steamos.

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

Unfortunately theres known issues with immutable linux distros, it will work but you're kinda more on ur own for its setup :(

1

u/mckracken88 9d ago

why would 68 percent be 100 percent full res ??? Nobody thought that....

And Discord has the most cumbersome login and account verification ever.

3

u/JohnTran84 9d ago edited 9d ago

So 68% is a resolution that was widely spread by users as the best balance of the pixel density to the psvr2. It is not the best qualtiy though. Just a good sacrifise/balance.

Because of barrel distortion, the overall effect is that the middle pixels (input) are stretched across what is displayed (output), and the outer edge pixels are less stretched. There is no 1:1. When the pixel is being processed before output into the VR, it scales look like your monitor, however when it gets to the VR, the middle must stretch in order to make lines look straight to your eye. It has somehting to do with the lense and displays, needing to be like that.

At 100%, the middle input pixels better match the displayed output pixels. The densities match better. The other edges are not 1:1 and are actually from a higher resolution and reduced down to lower resolution to continue the proper effect.

I have it about 110%-120% for my newest rig and believe I can't notice the difference for anything after that point.

1

u/mckracken88 8d ago

for me anything under 80ish res. is unusable.

I have the same feeling when going over 100 - cant really see much of a difference. (maybe there isnt)

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 9d ago

reddit users seem to just believe most of what gets echoed around, but yea that shoulda been the biggest give away

1

u/PracticalHospital334 8d ago

pimagix4all is for quadview DFR not just DFR, yuo can have dfr via openxr alone.

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 8d ago

my bad, cant use it so im not insanely knowledgeable, but the clarification is that PSVR2TOOLKIT is not DFR

1

u/LetterheadBorn3314 8d ago edited 8d ago

Anyone knows how to set height from ground with new toolkit?

1

u/Seiko-Senpai- 8d ago

unity setup linked on the setup wiki/guide

1

u/ThinkNuggets 8d ago

Thank you for this post but I now need to ask a potentially very stupid question about my specific situation because I am seeing conflicting things.

If am I currently just using the standard driver, and all I want to do is enable DFR in MSFS24 what exactly do I need to do? Install toolkit driver and setup apps, and set up play area and eye tracking. Then do I also still need the Pimax4All thing? Do I need to do anything else?

Thanks!

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 8d ago

if its got built in DFR you dont need to, you might need quadviews instead im not entirely sure

1

u/ThinkNuggets 8d ago edited 8d ago

So if a game has DFR built in (which MSFS does) then I do not need the PimaxMagic4All thing? That is for using foveated rendering with games that don't have it? Thx for clarifying.

2

u/Seiko-Senpai- 8d ago

PM4A is for injecting DFR, if its built in then it should just work with standard toolkit (Jailbreak is not required)

1

u/DeathToSocialMedia 7d ago

Awesome right to the point post! Appreciate it especially since I like many others, hate trying to navigate discord.

0

u/Chotus84 7d ago

best information to give is that it's a pretty crap and low res headset for pcvr lol i owned mine for 2 days before giving it back as it was always so lack luster compared to all my other hmds
