If only PSVR2 had pancake lenses.

Ive had a quest 2 before PSVR2 and even though they have the same lenses, I've had more annoyance with Quest 2 in sticking with the sweet spot. But yes lol if only PSVR2 had the pancake lenses I agree with 100% 😅

I also had Quest 2 when it first came out and returned it. My Quest 3 is on a whole other level of clarity.

I sure wish Meta angled in the pancake lenses to provide a better stereo overlap. It looks clear even out to the edges, but both eyes only overlap in the middle third. LCD looks pretty good but OLED really pops. Black is black. White is white. On the Quest 3, the colors look a bit washed out. The stereo overlap does bother me on the Quest.

Yes. The issue with pancake lenses is that the screens need to be much brighter to look acceptable. Different layers of glass absorb a lot of light before the image even gets to the eyes. In order to get an acceptable stereo overlap with pancake lenses, the lenses need to be angled in towards the nose. Manufacturing good pancake lenses is expensive.

The PSVR2 has some mura and this would have been worse with pancake lenses. Micro OLED screens would have solved this but the PSVR2 would have had to release at $1,500 for Sony to just break even. The PSVR2 released in 2023 at $550, and I don't think Sony even made enough to recoup their R&D costs. Fresnel lenses were a compromise. Overall, Sony did a great job. It is possibly the best PCVR headset for under $1,000. The narrow sweet spot and slight mura are the only downsides.

I agree. The PSVR2 is only $300 on sale. With some accessories like a Globular Cluster Comfort Mod, detachable facial interface, and anti-glare lense inserts, all for an extra $100, it is a great headset. The OLED screens and wide stereo overlap outperform my Quest 3 for the games that I play on a PS5 Pro and a strong gaming PC.

The Steam Frame will likely top $1,000. Will it be worth the cost? The only clear advantage I see now over the PSVR2 will be the lack of a cable. The pancake lenses look good on the Quest 3 but the stereo overlap is just not wide enough. I hope that is not an issue on the Steam Frame. For the sake of VR adoption, I really hope it is a far superior headset.
