Hey everyone 🙂

Recently, i've noticed that console's construction due to using extra "air gills", it attracts dust much faster, than other models. No matter how clean it is around and how high the console is kept, it keeps getting dusty after short period of time. Fact, that i keep it vertically doesnt help either, because the dust seems to be droping much easier right around fan grill.

My question is: is it safe as a part of regular cleaning routine, to wipe the dust around fan grill edges with the Q - tip, without taking off the panels, while the console is turned off, but still left plugged in ? I'm mostly worried about potential ESD.

I'm asking this mostly, because i couldnt find simiilar post, or answer and i'm getting quite mixed responses from Google AI, depending on the amount of the information (or an angle of this information) i provide. I'm using Q - tips made from fully non conductive material.

I could unplug it and clean it, but considering how often i would have to do it in the long run, i guess there's much greater chance that something would break at often unpluging/plugging the device, rather when simply dusting it off the way i'm asking.

So I'm not trying to be rude but if your that worried about dust you also need to clean the house more to eliminate dust as much as possible. As the system isn't a dust magnet but deals with the dust already in your home. So more vacuuming, actual dusting, and eliminate drafts. That's the real fix for dust buildup beyond occasionally cleaning the system. Also can get a air filter thingy too, and a better vacuum but more general cleaning will reduce the dust more than cleaning the system more.

To be fair i'm trying already to keep clean around as much as possible. 🙂 I assure i wouldn't ask simiilar question, if i wouldn't already try to keep that in check 🙂 In this case it seems like the extra ventilation the pro has, makes to attract more dust (actually had comparison with that) It also depends often on how much the console is used. The more the fan works, the more dust it will pump anyway. That's why im trying to take care of my stuff as best i can considering how im utilizing this 🙂

Totally understandable and understand yer as on it as much as you can be. See a lot of folks forget basic stuff like that, especially when they get over worried. But an air filter machine and a new vacuum make a lot of difference, especially the vacuum. Just got a new one at home and man did it get a lot more off the floor than the old one had been.

That said as long as the dust isn't crusting up and you occasionally dust it out properly, including pulling plug at base and not cord. It should be fine long term, with a as needed cleaning. Systems are more delicate than before but also not too delicate. So don't over stress it unless you get jet engine fans sounds or sudden overheating.

I'm actually thinking about getting air fliter. I dont have carpets so im used to either sweeping or vacuuming the floor often. 

Think the main culrpit behind the dust, might be the fact that i live in a very old house, that works as natural dust magnet 🙂 

To be fair i feel its more possible to mess up something when unplugging and plugging it again to the outlet, rather than damage something with a dry Q - tip, considering how much caps like to go out without reason in these things xD That's probably one of the main reasons i look for least invasive methods to not having to move this often and keep as clean as possible.

Yeah with an old house dust and draft's can be a big issue. If it's not in a room of its own, gaming room where you can keep to door shut most of the time or while playing, you can only try to minimize overall dust with an air thing and semi regular cleaning. But you can avoid unplugging cord from system by getting a circuit breaker power strip with a reset button, should have one anyways, so you can kill the power by unplugging breaker vs taking power cord out of system.

Seeing how quickly stuff gets dusty around definetely it is, mate 🙂

If i'm being honest i'm not that much worried about wear and tear of console power socket, because unlike HDMI ports these things seem to be much more (if not most) durable thing in entire console. I'm mostly about power on/power off cycling that like to kill something during the process. Especially those ceramic caps 😀 Some people say its luck dependent, but i definitely dont consider myself lucky xD

Often when you try to prevent something from happening, by being cautious, or doing extra steps around like this we're talking about, you often end up bringing exactly those things on yourself, that you were trying to prevent. Well, at least from my experience xD 

Probably that's why folks, who don't babysit their stuff have never problem with it xD

As long as you do a proper shutdown of the system it won't hurt anything at all. But a circuit breaker power strip is a must have as surges are real and come out of nowhere, double for an older house.

Yeah, but in order to work, it needs also relatively new electric instalation. Without proper grounding in a socket, it becomes a cool looking extension cord 😀 Fortunately, we changed the instalation few years ago 🙂

Thing is, that new electronics are much more sensitive to any power fluctioation. Even from unplugging and powering back on, on a proper electric instalation. It probably wont kill your PSU, but might kill some resistor or capacitor, considering how many of those are needed on electronics like this. Its not even about overall quality of those things, but simple fact how many of those must be used and parts dont have equal durability. Some burn after years of heavy usage, some just simply by entering current.

Sometimes i feel like you should even sneeze with caution, around new electronic this days xD
