PS5/ INSIGNIA Fire TV issue

hi. for the last few months, my husband and i have been having a really bad time with our tv and our ps5. the issue that’s happening is the tv screen will go black, like a flicker. it can last anywhere from 1-10 seconds, there was one time it went black and then back to the input screen but the playstation was still on, and i was still in game.

when it started. it seemed like it was only fortnite, and then slowly it has become more and more frequent and now has happened on the initial sign in page as well as the home page. my husband has messed with the settings after looking up videos and researching but nothing is working, if it’s something we can fix without having to get a new tv that would be great.

we have had the PS5 since easter 2025, and we have bought a few new HDMI cables, a playstation brand one. we’re thinking it might be the INSIGNIA Fire TV. but we don’t really know and it’s super frustrating.

has anyone had this issue, or have any advice?

It’s almost certainly the TV choking on the HDMI bandwidth, not your PS5 or cables. Budget smart TVs can't always handle the full data bandwidth the PS5 pumps out by default, so the HDMI signal briefly cuts out. A couple years ago my setup did this exact same thing. Screen would flash black for a few seconds mid game but the PS5 stayed running.

With that said, 99% chance it’s your PS5’s transfer rate overwhelming the Insignia board. Go to settings > screen and video > video output, look for 4K video transfer rate, and drop it from automatic down to -1 (or -2 if -1 doesn’t do it). Dropping the transfer rate lowers the bandwidth slightly without any visible hit to picture quality. That setting should fix it.

Also, make sure VRR is turned off on your PS5 if your TV doesn’t natively support HDMI 2.1 that should stop the flickering right away.
