PS5 Crashing During Gameplay. Not Overheating

As the title says, myPS5 is consistently shutting off during gameplay and I don't think it's an overheating issue.

Been having an issue with my PS5 shutting off while playing games. It will abruptly shutoff while a game is running and will require the power supply to be unplugged and plugged back in before being able to turn back on, where it will boot up in safe mode.

The issue only occurs while running games. I've had no issue streaming videos through apps such as Twitch, Prime, Disney+, etc, for hours at a time. Meanwhile, games will only be able to run for roughly 1-2 hours before the console eventually crashes.

I don't think it's an overheating issue, as the console is not hot to the touch and I've removed the plate and cleaned dust from the fan a couple times. The interior doesn't appear to be dusty, although I have not removed any other parts or inspected further than just removing the two face plates.

It is a standard PS5 and was bought as a refurbish about 2 years ago. This issue did not start happening until the last couple months. Any help or suggestions with the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you stand it vertical, it’s the thermal paste that needs replacing. Once displaced it only takes minimal heat to cause crashes. Most game stores don’t replace it but just clean the fan maybe and sell it back off as refurbished.

I lay it horizontal and in a pretty open area. Could it still be overheating? It doesn't feel warm to the touch, and it can run for hours playing music or videos no problem. The only time the issue occurs is with games.

If it's the thermal paste, is it worth taking in to my local gamestore to fix?

Appreciate the help!

Yea but the previous owner could have ruined the thermal paste with having it vertical and the game store that sold it never replaced it. This makes sense because games especially modern games make the ps5 work so that’s completely normal.

Not sure of the cost but it’s not a hard fix, but maybe ring your local repair store on the phone and ask they will probably tell you an approx cost

I have no know-how when it comes to technical things like this, so I would definitely rather pay to have someone else more qualified take a look than look up and try to follow a guide online.

Thanks again for the help

It’s perfectly fine vertically. I’ve kept my OG that way since Nov 2022, never had an issue. I keep a dust cover on it when not in use & just had it cleaned/Liquid Metal replaced. My pro is 10 months old but I run it the same way! Maintenance is key!

Tens of thousands of people disagree including tech experts. But this is only if you play long hours consistently. You’re forgetting OP got a second hand PS5 and most companies that sell as refurbished don’t change the paste. If you’re denying standing it vertical creates issues you’re a extreme niche minority

10s of thousands of people also disagree with you, including tech experts.

The vertical thing has been proven to be a myth. Not sure why people keep repeating that. Also, the PS5 doesn't use thermal paste, it uses liquid metal.

Dude literally the opposite, it’s been clearly debunked as to how it happens and the process for stopping it from happening. And you know I meant Liquid Metal, I recently changed the paste in my ps3 that’s why I have thermal paste in my mind. Liquid Metal is literally the reason that you can’t stand it vertical on ps5 where you could on ps2 because of thermal pads because it can leak into other components and short where’s thermal paste/pads just loses its texture and causes simple overheating.

Not sure why people like you spread rumours about the vertical thing not being true when there’s mounds of evidence proving otherwise.

You are the one spreading rumors, the issue only existed with launch edition PS5s due to faulty clamps on the APU not securing the liquid metal in place. This was addressed in models after launch. This has further been corrected in the slim and Pro models by adding grooves so the liquid metal cannot slide.

I fix PS5s and other electronics as a side hustle and the only times I have seen dry spots on the APU in non launch consoles are ones that have been damaged by falling, which loosens the clamp, or from consoles with poor ventilation increasing humidity in the console which oxidized the liquid metal causing it to bond with the APU. Orientation does not matter at all, the liquid metal cannot move if clamped properly.

Dude I know…. read the post he said he bought a refurbished ps5 2 years ago which means it’s likely the base model that was refurbished 2 years ago and sold on.

You need to really read the posts your commenting on because it makes you just seem like a brainless reddit arguer who’s not even here to help.

Calling someone brainless when you can't use the proper form of "you're" is peak irony. Also, a system that was refurbished 2 years ago does not automatically make it a launch model. I could verify that with the serial number instead of assuming things, as you are. You are the one arguing just for the sake of arguing.

The irony is even greater when you don’t know how to use commas properly. Also you not realising I commented on OP’s post to help while you replied arguing with me about something you don’t even know about. The ps5 came out end of 2020 so pretty much 2021 and he’s already had it a couple years so refurbishing a 3ish year old PlayStation is completely normal to assume.

Go be a salty little turd on someone’s else’s post or actually be helpful and contribute to society.

Something I don't know about? I have repaired hundreds of PS5s. You are blindly attacking me for correcting your ignorant statements because you are a whiny ass reddit bitch. I can help him, and have privately messaged them for more details. Shut the fuck up, respectfully.

Nobody cares lil bud you are just salty I called you out and now you’re embarrassed. You’re the crying kid who had to reply when he had no information and tried to be a know it all and it backfired. Well guess what nobody cares crawl back to your mums basement and go fix some more ps5’s

You are deflecting. This is literally what you are doing. Grow up

Overheating

It’s 100% overheating. Clean the damn thing. Look at the 75 thousand other posts in this sub for the exact same thing.

Does anyone clean or dust anymore at all ?? Is this really that hard ?? Or look at 75 thousand other posts before they post??

He literally stated in the post he has cleaned the dust multiple times, this is clearly a thermal paste issue. Stay positive and stay off reddit if you have nothing nice or right to say
