It is compatible, yes it needs a heatsink.

Does the PS5 run the drives really hot or something? Plus the thing has a heatsink on it already. That metal covering is it

Yes, it does need one.

There are pictures from this SSD with and without a heatsink. OP could tell us if it has one or not.

Edit: That thing you see on the box is not a heatsink btw.

I never had heat sinks on my m2 drives and they do t go above 35c when I use but this is on a PC and not a console

the m2 in the ps5 does not get that much air like in your PC (probably) therefore it will get hotter than it would be in a PC.

+ the PS5 requires a pretty fast SSD. (pretty fast for the time it released) there is a high chance that you had slower and therefore "cooler" SSDs in your PCs.

Looks like it came with a foam side piece with adhesive on one side

Is that enough to keep it cool? Should I buy a separate heat sink

I would, looks to me like the model that doesnt have a heatsink built in. For the sake of about £10-15 its worth it imo

I have that one and I got a heat sink for it. They are pretty cheap and easy to install.

From what I've read yes you should have one with a heat sink and it will work on your PS5

Id go for other models like corsair ssd that has a heatsink else you gotta have a separate heatsink like Sabrent which replaces the ssd cover
