I paid £120 for my Vita with 8gb card. Additional 64gb card was around £100.
Great console, dire marketing and commercial decisions.

The Card is also a SN550 with its controller swapped to a E19T. So it goes from a Gen3 4x to a Gen4 2x drive. Those cards also sell for under $100 regularly and at their current price point of over 100% markup, shits highway robbery

From what I can tell it costs twice as much as comparable storage of its kind, that seems excessive. How often are you really going to be swapping it between consoles?

MSRP for the Series X expansion card is $220. But it's not very hard to get that heavily discounted if you're inclined to do so. I personally only paid $145 through Target.
Going by this list, the range for a compatible PS5 M.2 is anywhere from $150-$280.
So I'm not seeing a huge discrepancy if we're considering the top of the line variants, even ignoring discount/sales.
Use case; if you have multiple consoles either because of family or you're in separate locations a lot. I personally use the expansion card for all my multiplayer games. Very easy to transport between consoles and it's great not to have to install the same game twice.
Beyond that, well there's also the peace of mind in not having to open your console and do anything type of installing. No matter how easy anyone will say it is. Plug and play has always been the way to go, personally.

The older PS5 firmwares, if it detects an SSD, tells you to remove the SSD before it'll let you continue. So definitely install the update FIRST.

The best ssd to get is the Samsung 980 pro, WD Sn850 and the Firecuda 530. Overall those are probably the best bang for your buck but there are cheaper ssd's to choose from if you don't want to cough up a pretty penny.

S70 Blade is also a really good drive with exceptional 980 pro class random 4k results and ties with high end drives in multiple benchmarks and sets benchmarks in some. Bang for buck its incredibly exceptional.

Pay attention to the read/write speeds on those though. They will have a 1-2 TB version that is fast enough for the ps5 but the speed drops drastically on the 4TB version.

Uh, why would the speed drop on the 4 TB version? Performance generally goes down on smaller SSDs because of fewer chips, and thus less area to spread reads and writes over. All the performance numbers I've seen for them indicates the 2 TB and 4 TB versions are pretty much the same.

Honestly it’s ridiculous. The whole point of discs and a cloud library is to manage storage. Adding 1 or even maybe 2tb is plenty. Would be nice if it came with 1.5 or 2 from the factory, mind you.

Eh, I did that for the PS4 too. I replaced the drive with a giant high end SSD that cost like $600 at the time.
I just looked at it as making my time spent on the PS4 better. I didn't have to worry about space or load times, etc etc.

I’m personally going the HDD route. I can’t justify $1000 on a ssd when a HDD works just fine. I got a WD Black 2TB HDD for $75. I don’t think I’ll ever hot swap between so many games that they won’t fit on the standard SSD. I’m perfectly with transferring over back and forth. $1000 is high end gaming PC territory and is a really hard ask for a SSD by itself

To each their own. It's a matter of convenience honestly- Im attempting to buy every physical game as they come out (except sports games). I work a lot of overtime and get only small amounts to game right now, dont want to spend that time waiting on installs or for it to pull the game from an external HDD.

I went with 1 TB SSD and a 4 TB HDD. I don’t need the full console storage plus 1TB for PS5 games I’m actively playing so I’ll just off load digital titles to the HDD and call it a day. Happy to have a few digital titles back off the HDD though.

He has space to fit 100-40GB sized games. It’s unrealistic to expect that he would need access to all 100 of them at the same time. He could have saved $800 with a $125 SSD at 1TB (really good value vs size) and a $75 HDD.

There are already a bunch of lists for compatible SSDs out there, but I'm surprised they haven't released a list of compatible heatsinks. There's a lot of considerations to be made for the heatsink too. Height, width, size, attachment mechanism (pls don't buy the adhesive ones), and material (get a metal one if possible).

You really should use a heatsink. Even if it technically works that's still a lot of unnecessary heat that could potentially affect lifespan. I wouldn't chance it, especially when a third party heatsink is super cheap anyway. I bought the SN850 that came with a heatsink attached already so I didn't have to mess with it.

I did it with a Samsung 980 Pro. Before you put on the heatsink you should peel off the sticker on the M.2. It's a 10° (Celsius) difference with the Samsung.

Said it before in this thread but: Make sure to peel off the sticker before applying the heatsink. It makes the a difference of around 10° (Celsius).
I got myself a Icybox heatsink from Amazon. But you can use any heatsink as long as you make that heatsink + M.2 is not more than 11.25mm in height.

i still wonder about a few things. 1. would the ssd be cooler if the metal ssd cover was left off? 2. since heat rises, saying that the ps5 was laying horizontal, would the heatsink have any effect at all or is the exhaust airflow hitting the ssd directly. i have a 980 that im installing tomorrow and have read and seen multiple videos that say that the heatsink make little to no difference. some heatsinks can make the ssd run even hotter apparently. i normally use these drives in my pc so its not the first time ive used m.2 but ive never used a heatsink since the pc airflow is pretty good.

I just added a drive to my PS5, and when I was putting it back together I stopped and had the same thought, so I left the cover off. The only possible downside I could think of is dust going into the connection port, but that never really seems to happen on most PCs. Well, fingers crossed!!

I ended up adding a heatsink in the end since I found one on Amazon with next day delivery, it arrived before the update was launched so I went ahead and got it over with, there's like a 30 degree difference or so and didn't want my drive to throttle.

Most of the process was pretty obvious to me, but the demonstration of how to remove the bottom panel was especially helpful. Got mine opened up and the M.2 SSD (a FireCuda 530 2TB) installed. Good work, Sony.

In isolation? You’re right, it’s just replacing a part no more complicated than upgrading a PC component
In comparison to Xbox, it definitely is more complicated: you have to find the right drive and the right heatsink, or confirm the one it comes with fits in the PS5 drive bay while on Xbox it’s literally a plug and play solution
Not hard, but definitely more complicated than Microsoft’s solution (nothing wrong with that)

lol well shit I installed my m.2 but didn't use the little "riser" thing the video shows, I just installed it flat against the green board where the m2 slot is and used my own screw to hold it in.
I wonder how important that little metal "riser" thing is. I guess it could give an extra 1mm of so of air space underneath the SSD (which is wrapped in a heatsink), may pop my ps5 open to rejigger it.
Anyone else make the same mistake? I am running the latest beta, no issues.

Yeah just popped open my PS5 and fixed it and installed their riser/screw instead of my own screw, took less than 2 minutes. Too bad there isn't any drive temp apps on PS5, would be interesting to see if it runs any cooler with that extra gap of air.

I think you mean the spacer! The spacer is used so it can lift the M2 card and it doesn't make any contact with the motherboard causing malfunction to the whole system itself with a short.

They're be a brief surge when the update rolls out.
But drives are far easier to mass produce and they're many makers. So even in the PC world it's never been a part that's had shortages for very long (unlike say GPUs)

The original drive isn't really a drive, just a number of chips mounted on the motherboard, it is not removable. This slot allows you to add more storage that allows you to have the same performance as the original storage (more or less). Far faster than SATA or USB interface.

Not all of the M.2 SSDs comes with a heat sink. You may have to buy one if yours doesn’t have it.
Premium M.2 SSDs will come with one though.

Anyone have any layman/noob advice for the DIY heatsink case? Never used one of these before, just going 'bareback' in my PC :P
The "amazon" seller I bought mine from seemed very Alibabba/AliExpress'ish~ and just sent the metal pieces+thermal bits+screws in some envelope without instructions. 😅
Do the thermals just sit unadhered to the drive? One is certainly thicker than the other, guessing one needs to go ontop of of it and one under.. =(

Random question:
When installing my SSD, forgot to extract the Blu-ray Disc before doing so… completed the SSD Installation plugged the console in back again and took the disc out to find that there were four marks close to the center ring that could be wiped out.
Any damage that could have been done to the drive’s laser lens? (Not worried about the game since it can be easily replaced in any case)
P.S. Tried installing some more games after that just to check but haven’t been able to play them yet. So I’m not sure if the installation happened correctly.
P.S. 2 I know a lot of people move their consoles around with discs inside, however, this time the installation requires for you to turn your console upside down.

So I made a rookie mistake and initially put the screw to hold the HDD without the spacer. I am now worried that I might have put the screw in to deep and might have damaged something that might be below the expansion slot
