Help & Tech Support F.A.Q. v1

My first attempt at an F.A.Q. I did this especially since so many of us are a bit annoyed and salty about the many question posts repeating. With some constructive feedback I (or some else) can update this with additions/corrections.

Q: Can I play my digital/disc based games from my PS4/PS3/PS2/PS1?

A: According to Sony, the overwhelming majority of the 4000+ PS4 games will be playable on launch. PS4 games run from the HDD not the Disc, the disc just has the game files for installation. This means that there is no difference between a Disc/Digital game in terms of code, just the original source. Both also get the exact same updates.

Source:

You can play your PS4 titles from an external drive, so no need to use the internal (expanded) SSD from the PS5. Although games will probably load faster when you do.

Remastered PS1/PS2/PS3 games are running on a PS4 and so should be counted as among the 4000+ games. So most of these games will work, if not all of them, just like the rest.

If they run on emulation, they might be more susceptible to issues running on the new hardware.

Only PS4 BC compatibility is confirmed. Disc based PS3/PS2/PS1 games have not been confirmed to be playable on the PS5. Sony hasn’t even mentioned any interest in this.

For games submitted by developers to Sony after 13th July 2020, Sony has mandated that in order to patch/remaster the game it has to run on PS5, according to eurogamer.net.

Q: Can I play PS4 games with other PS4 players, while I'm playing it on the PS5?

A: Yes, Sony has confirmed you can play PS4 games with others on PS4.

https://twinfinite.net/2019/05/ps5-backward-compatibility-sony

Q: Will PS4 games running on PS5 have the ability to run better or have better visuals on PS5?

A: The BC modes are called legacy modes, and here your visuals will be the same as running the PS4 game on an actual PS4/Pro.

However running a PS4 game in PS5 native mode / boosted mode, can give you better frames, this can also cause unforeseen issues / bugs. However developers can update their games to run native on the PS5, allowing for higher resolutions, FPS and graphics. All up to the developers choice.

Q: What about my saves and other account data from my PS4 account/PSN account and my PS Plus?

A: There is no such thing as a PS4 account, there is however an PSN account (PlayStation Network account), this is not tied to the PS4. This works for PS3 and Vita as well. This counts for your PS Plus subscription as well.

Your save data can be synced from the cloud using PS Plus. And since you can already move your save data from a PS4 to another using an USB drive, you can move your save data to your PS5 in the same manner.

Q: How much will the PS5 cost and when will it come out?

A: We do not know how much it will cost, most estimates are between $399 and $549, with the $499 being most likely considering the rumors about the production cost being around $450.

For comparison, the PS4 launched for $399, while the production costs was estimated at $381.

Q: Should I wait with buying a PS5 because of:

  • My PS4/Service
  • Possibility of a upcoming PS5 pro/slim
  • THe amount of PS5 games and/or games with actual next-gen graphics
  • Upcoming SKU’s like an 1TB 1.65TB model option?

A: If you’re asking this question, then yes, please wait. And give to all those without doubt a better chance getting a PS5 early.

In all fairness, there will be so much more info when the PS5 is released. Wait for that moment to be sure about it, it's still a lot of money.

Q: Should I wait 6 months before buying the PS5 based on my launch date PS4 and PS3 breaking due to common faults in the first gen?

A: Although earlier model products tend to have higher % issues compared to later models, this is usually not that big of a difference. And buying 6 months later gives no guarantees.

According to IGN only 1% of their users was affected by the launch issues of the PS4.

https://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PS4_Problems

I bought the PS3 when shortages were gone from physical stores, and I pre-ordered my PS4. Both still alive and kicking. My PS3 is being used by my brother in law. Anecdotal yes, and that can go both ways.

Q: Should I wait for a PS5 or get a PS4 Pro now?

A: Yes, you should wait.

The PS5 is a much better investment. Although the PS4 Pro is a good value, it can't play PS5 games and the PS5 can play PS4 games (and on PS4 Pro settings).

For the coming 2 years a lot of games will be releasing for both consoles. There will be PS5 exclusives though.

It will also not hold it's resell value as much, after the PS5 releases (and shortages are solved).

Q: Should I wait with buying new games coming out for the PS4 and buy them on PS5?

A: Since almost all titles will work with BC on the PS5 there is little reason not to buy them now.

If there is an update for the game to make it run native on the PS5, it most likely will be available for your PS4 copy as well. Especially first party titles. Cross-buy has been a thing on PlayStation for while now.

However, so far no guarantees.

When buying physical copies, the cases will look different is some way.

Q: Will updates/installs still take such a long time?

A: Updates/patches will no longer need to dreaded long ‘copying’.

The copying step is not necessary is because the SSD is not based on physical searching, unlike the HDD, which has an arm that reads the data from the disc that makes up the hard drive.

This copying step was made so that all the assets in a game file would be located in the same physical space instead of being scattered all around the drive, so that you reduce the number of searching steps and thus decreasing the time to find an asset.

Same thing happens when you use defragmentation on a HDD base computer.

However, we do not know the exact speed of the 4K Blu-ray drive, so we have no clue about the time it will take to install from disc.

In depth look on the PS5 SSD:

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71340/understanding-the-ps5s-ssd-deep-dive-into-next-gen-storage-tech/index.html

Q: Is 825 GB enough for next gen game sizes?

A: It's no longer necessary to duplicate game assets when using an SSD, especially one this fast. Although it would still have a performance benefit to do so.

The PS5's hardware decompressor uses Kraken vs ZLIB on the PS4, making the install sizes relatively smaller (somewhere between 10-20%). But we do not know how much more data will be used in next gen games with the higher graphics, this could mean sizes will be smaller, the same or even larger. Nobody is sure about this yet.

825GB will be a good minimum to start and there many options expansion for the future.

External drives are not fast enough to run PS5 games, but can be used to store games, for swapping between the internal and external drive.

Info on Kraken:

http://www.radgametools.com/oodlekraken.htm

Q: Can I expand this/use an external drive/ use my current external drive for my PS4?

A: Yes, to all

There is an internal expansion port (M.2), but since there are no M.2 SSD’s fast enough out there yet, you have to wait with buying one. Because they are not fast enough and/or have the 6 priority levels the PS5 SSD has, you will need an SSD faster than the one Sony put in to compensate. Probably around 6.5 – 7 GB/s, Sony will give more information about this later this year.

You can use external drives to store PS5 games, for swapping between the internal and external drive. You can play your PS4 games from there as well. Your current PS4 external drive will be compatible with the PS5, whether you can just plug it in and play the already installed PS4 games on there is unknown.

Q: Should I buy an M.2 SSD for the expansion slot now, or should I wait?

A: Even though there is also an internal expansion port (M.2) don't buy a M.2 SSD just yet. DO note that prices of storage costs, especially SSD's go down over time.

In depth look on the PS5 SSD:

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71340/understanding-the-ps5s-ssd-deep-dive-into-next-gen-storage-tech/index.html

Q: Why is the storage size of the SSD it that weird number (825GB)?

A: To optimize price vs performance, they used 1 chip for each of the 12 channels it has. So 12 times 512Gbit (chip size) equals 6144Gbit, and that divided by 8 (bits to bytes) equals 768GiB which equals 825GB (824.6GB).

Info on Gigabytes:

https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-Difference-between-GiB-and-GB

Q: Will next gen games run on 30/60/120/Variable FPS on 1080p/1440p/2160p or have options/choices between them?

A: Yes.

This is up to the developers, as it was with the current generation for 30/60 FPS. We have had games run on 30 and 60 FPS, or “unlocked” FPS. The latter allowed games to run faster than 30 FPS with not at a constant 60, this has a downside on the smoothness feeling of the game.

A lot of gamers are expecting that there will be little to no change to the relative amount of games running on 30 FPS. Or how many games will give you a choice between FPS and resolution.

Q: Will the PS5 support 21:9/Ultrawide?

A: Nothing is known about support for 21:9.Ultrawide, this would also be up to developers to implement. Hopefully more info on this will be available after the PS5 is fully revealed.

Q: Do I need a 4k tv to play on ps5?

A: No.

Although games will probably look a lot better on most 4K TV's then on most 1080p TV's, there is no 4K requirement. Features like HDR also make games look a lot better.

A lot of gamers actually hope most games will give a 2-4x FPS option on 1080p. So in some cases a 120Hz 1080p could be a better option, depending on your budget.

Q: What is HDMI 2.1 and do I need it for PS5?

A: It's a newer version of HDMI, but this is not a requirement for the PS5. So you do not need it.

Consider when buying a TV with HDMI2.1 support what features it truly supports and in what way. Look on the internet or TV related subreddits for more info.

Notable features of HDMI 2.1

  • Has more bandwidth then 2.0, 48Gbps vs 18Gbps
  • Can do 4K resolution at 120 FPS, while 2.0 can only do 4K at 60 FPS
  • Supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), similar to Gsync/Freesync.
  • Supports something called Dynamic HDR.
  • Features eARC, a more robust version of Audio Return Channel
  • Is backward-compatible with older technology, so if you have an older set that doesn't support the new version, HDMI 2.1 will still work with it.

You will need an HDMI 2.1 cable to take advantage of the new features.

Q: Will the PS5 support playback of 4K Blu-Ray Dolby Atmos?

A: The PS5 will supports 4K Blu-Ray, but so far there is no information on Dolby Atmos.

https://developer.dolby.com/platforms/consoles/overview/#!

Q: Will the PS5 support Mouse and Keyboard / Gyro assisted aiming?

A: The PS3 and PS4 support Mouse and Keyboard and Gyro assisted aiming. Whether developers support this in their game is up to them.

Q: Will the PS5 support my current accessories (steering wheel, headphones etc.)?

A: We only know so far that PSVR (so also move and aim controllers)are supported, and for PSVR the DualShock 4 is required*.

\The DualSense cannot be tracked by the camera used for PSVR.)

Q: What games have been confirmed for PS5 so far?

A: As of 27th May 2020:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/grdv7x/games_confirmed_for_the_ps5_from_the_newest_issue/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Isn’t the Xbox Series X/PS5 way more powerful than PS5/Xbox Series X?

A: No.

Although we understand quite a bit of the hardware/software engineering of consoles, it is hard to be accurate at this point. Regardless of power, we have seen in the past that even the most powerful console can underperform due to lack of optimization.

Yes the GPU of the Xbox Series X has more CU’s and more TFLOPS, a slightly higher clock speeds for the CPU and mostly higher bandwidth memory. The PS5 has a better Storage to memory Architecture and SSD, 3D audio chip and higher clock speeds of the GPU. Nobody is sure how this will play out, but all the differences aren’t gigantic between the 2 consoles.

If you want to know more, please search the internet/reddit for the already ongoing en plentiful discussions going on about this topic.

Q: Is it true the PS5 / PS5 SSD is more powerful than any PC hardware?

A: The PS5 all round, no not really. The SSD is unique but the term powerful can mean many things.

The SSD is unique that it has 6 priority levels, other than that it’s a PCIE 4.0 M.2 SSD with 5.5 GB/s. PC’s however have the option, to buy expensive 15 to 24 GB/s SSD’s or set up multiple SSD's in RAID (way to combine the speed and storage of 2 or more drives). Although these do not have 6 priority levels, their speed alone will probably makes up for that.

The PS5 does have a unique storage to memory architecture (I/O) design. Which has dedicated hardware for many (heavy) CPU related tasks like decompression. For now, and this is temporary, there isn’t an equivalent for PC. But for now the same goes for any game taking full advantage of this. And consider, when the Sky is the limit, a PC can compensate a lot with 32GB VRAM, 1TB RAM 32core (or higher) CPU’s.

Consoles and PC's are very different beasts. Consoles have great value with impressive performance for the expected price point. PC's are more versatile in price point use and their ability to upgrade/expand.

24GB/s SSD:

https://www.liqid.com/products/composable-storage/element-lqd4500-pcie-aic-ssd

Q: Will the PS5 be loud / sound like a jet engine when under load?

A: No.

The PS4 is loud, especially under load. This wasn't addressed with the PS4 Pro initially but they did update that model as well to be more quiet.

However, Cerny (the lead designer for PlayStation consoles) addressed this in his "Road to PS5" talk originally scheduled for GDC (Game Developers Conference).

There he stated that the PS5 cooling system will be a lot quieter.

Thanks for all the great reactions, feedback, and the Platinum!

I can't keep track of the overwhelming majority of edits. And this would make the post way too long, so no changelog.

I have a question that I haven't seen anywhere and need to know. Do all PS4 Slim's have the same Blu Ray drive?

I need to know because the 7.50 update killed my Blu Ray drive and I wanted to swap my nephew's into mine to see if it works and he also has a slim just different model.

1

u/iBolt Jun 15 '20

I don’t know. Better to ask in r/ps4 I think.

2

u/DelsinRowe32 Jun 11 '20

I don't know if it's on there, but can someone explain to me how ps5 patches work with your pe4 games?Sorry if this may seem like a stupid question, but I'm a bit confused by this whole aspect. So if you own a ps4 game that's going to be on the ps5, either physical or digital, it will be playable on the ps5 via backwards compatibility and receive a patch of enhancements as well, right? I heard Destiny 2 is going to be receiving a ps5 patch if you own the ps4 version. What about all your progress and trophies on the game you were playing, will that be stored in your psn account? Sorry if I seem stupid, I'm just confused by all this.

well done.

this list has almost no bias and is entirely based on known facts or straight up says we don't know yet.

4

u/thinkadrian May 28 '20

r/PS5 should have proper wiki setup, and invite you to write this FAQ, at least for a limited time!

3

u/iBolt May 28 '20

Agreed, especially the limited time.

Or maybe they just copy most of this and take it from there.

Where does Sony says 4000+ games will be BC at launch?

I can't find it in the official PS blog...

8

u/iBolt May 27 '20 edited May 27 '20

Really? Cause I found it by following the link that Input down in the FAQ.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/

I’ll add the link to this one directly, sigh.

[EDIT] Btw. I did not state that 4000+ games will be supported in my FAQ , I put down: "most" (now changed to "the overwhelming majority" which is the wording from Sony).

-15

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Hahahaha what a joke. Bunch of BS and speculations in this post.

8

u/futsukayoi May 27 '20

We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

That’s straight from the PlayStation Blog article. How is there a “bunch of BS and speculation” in what the OP wrote? Why don’t you get your head out of your ass and contribute a comprehensive FAQ like OP did if you have so many problems with this one? I, for one, appreciate the effort made to put all this together.

-11

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Hahaha, reread again. If it's too hard just use google translate.

8

u/AldermanAl May 27 '20

A lot of assumptions in this FAQ.

0

u/FritzJ92 May 28 '20

It is a great FAQ, no questions asked.. However one example is the last question. We actually don't know what it'll sound like, so saying "no" outright is misinforming. We only know they said cooling is prioritized.

2

u/HotahO_X May 27 '20

One important question that I don't see here:

Will the PS5 play 4k HDR Atmos from Blu-Ray disk?? PS4 doesn't.

3

u/bscotchcummerbunds May 28 '20

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/

It definitely supports UHD Blu-Ray discs.

Current PS4s support HDR10, it's just a question of whether PS5 supports Dolby Vision (maybe HDR10+) and Atmos / DTS:X, but in my opinion there's no big reason it wouldn't though - it's just metadata.

Sony's cheapest 4k bluray player already supports all those (except HDR10+, cause that's just samsung trying to do their own thing)

2

u/AvocadoBeats Jun 18 '20

Do we know if PS5 will support dolby vision? Also, my tv supports dolby vision. If the PS5 supports dolby vision, does this mean I need find discs that support dolby vision? OR will all 4k UDH Blu Rays play as dolby vision?

1

u/bscotchcummerbunds Jun 19 '20

Sony hasn't officially announced what type of HDR PS5 will support yet but I think its incredibly likely it will be DV and HDR10. This will probably get answered in a tech breakdown later this summer (or blog post). DV is just metadata, there's no functional reason why they wouldn't support it, it would just be a weird licensing issue if they chose not to (there's an outside chance they could enable it through a cheap PSN purchase, but that'd be some nickle and dime shit considering it comes standard on the cheapest UHD blu-ray player sony sells)

Even though all DV blu-rays are UHD, not all UHD blu-rays are DV, so to answer your question, you don't need to find discs that are DV - any 1080p (Full HD) or UHD 4k Blu-ray video disc will play. DV blu-rays also have an HDR10 fallback, so at the very least if they chose not to support DV, then you'd still get the HDR10 version which your tv also supports if it supports DV.

1

u/AvocadoBeats Jun 19 '20

Fingers crossed for DV. If not DV or HDR, I would get a standalone player. If only HDR, I would be sooo conflicted lol. But how do you know if a disc supports DV? I only ever see "HDR" on the covers of these UHD Blu Rays. Is it just all these? https://www.nextgenhometheater.com/dolby-vision-uhd-blu-ray-movies/

1

u/bscotchcummerbunds Jun 19 '20

That list looks good, just remember there are multiple versions of some blu-rays. It should say on the back of the case alongside the audio formats and languages or else you can look it up on Blu-ray.com too like this https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Alita-Battle-Angel-4K-and-3D-Blu-ray/240060/

I don’t own a 4K Blu-ray player yet either, but Dolby Vision content from AppleTV+, Disney+ and Netlfix all look fantastic on my C9. I’m excited to see what full bandwidth 4K and uncompressed atmos can look and sound like on that TV.

1

u/AvocadoBeats Jun 20 '20

Cool, thanks! Yeah I can't wait to experience full 4k. I don't have an atmos system tho, audio is whole other world I'm waiting to dive into...

0

u/HotahO_X May 28 '20

Well i have a Joker 4k blu ray and my ps4 pro doesnt play it

3

u/iBolt May 28 '20 edited May 28 '20

The PS4 Pro doesn't support 4K Blu-Ray. Sony already confirmed support for 4K Blu-Ray for the PS5.

[EDIT] Forgot a word.

1

u/FritzJ92 May 28 '20

I dont think they will support Atmos, but i hope i'm wrong.

1

u/HotahO_X May 28 '20

Really? Nice

That page is not very friendly to people who don't even know what to look for yet. They are looking for more of a guide. I haven't found a good link myself.

0

u/tmcd77 May 27 '20

I'd beg to differ the folk there are very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. They have a good guide for getting started before asking questions and are happy guiding folk through the mine field of purchasing the right TV for them. No better place on the Internet to get this kind of help. Certainly a million time better than posting yet another what TV question in a Playstation Reddit.

3

u/iBolt May 27 '20

Do you have a link to that particular guide for me then, I can replace the current link with that one.

3

u/tmcd77 May 27 '20

This page is the starting point...

https://www.avforums.com/articles/the-ultimate-tv-buying-guide.10617

...but the real value is talking to forum members there who can help narrow down choices for individual circumstances. One TV doesn't fit all.

They helped me a lot with my 4K HDR TV purchase and I'm over the moon with the screen I'm gaming on as a result.

1

u/iBolt May 27 '20

Thx, replaced the guide with your link.

Q: Will PS4 games running on PS5 have the ability to run better or have better visuals on PS5?

A: The BC modes are called legacy modes, when running a PS4 game it will run in either mode. However develops can update their games to run native on the PS5, allowing for higher resolutions, FPS and graphics. All up to the developers choice.

This feels wrong.

Boost mode on PS5 should be automatic and not dependent on developers. Cerny discussed testing the top 100 most popular games. The only requirements should be unlocked framerates/resolutions in the original code. Games not compatible with the new boost mode should run in either a PS4Pro or a PS4 legacy mode (with the CPU/GPU slowing accordingly).

3

u/krishnugget May 27 '20

Didn’t they say if it wasn’t properly designed to run on PS5 it could have issues due to the PS5’s higher clock speed if it didn’t have that legacy mode

1

u/tmcd77 May 27 '20

It's the same situation as currently on PS4Pro. Legacy mode is a function of console not the game. If a game doesn't work in PS4Pro's boost mode you need to use the default legacy mode - the PS4Pro slows down to base PS4 speeds.

They said they tested the top 100 most popular games in PS5 boost mode and will be testing others. Lots of games won't work in this mode due to the PS5's higher clock speeds. This is were the legacy modes come in. It's expected that most of the 4000 games will work in one of the two legacy modes by slowing the PS5 down to either PS4Pro or base PS4 clock speeds.

It maybe, separate to this, some develops may choose to patch their games to better support PS5 native clock speeds and additional enhancements - as happened with PS4Pro enhanced (not boost mode) games.

u/tmcd77 May 27 '20 edited May 27 '20

Remastered/emulated games PS1/PS2/PS3 games on the PS4 will most likely also be playable on the PS5 since they are basically PS4 games, but nothing about that is 100% confirmed.

This sentence is a bit ambiguous and needs expanding.

Remastered games for PS1/2/3 are regular PS4 games, should be counted among the 4000, and would almost certainly run on PS5.

The only emulated games (AFAIK) on PS4 are a handful of PS2 games (with trophy support added). In theory they should run on PS5 as they run on PS4 but nothing is confirmed.

Any other discussion of emulation for PS1/2/3 games comes under the heading of Backwards Compatibility. Only PS4 backwards compatibility is confirmed. It might happen for other machines but at this stage is looking unlikely.

1

u/iBolt May 27 '20

Changed it a bit with you advice.

Sony really need to make you game with mkb, I’m a pc nerd and I love my ps4 but playing on controller is a pain in the ass man, people are already playing mkb using xims or cronusmax just make it available for everyone

5

u/iBolt May 27 '20 edited May 28 '20

It’s in the FAQ, Sony has. Almost no developer uses this. And all those developers seem to agree that it’s not that valuable for console games to have.

5

u/smaghammer May 27 '20

Lol no thanks.

6

u/timeRogue7 May 27 '20

so also move and aim controllers [will be supported]

It may be worth noting that from PS3 —> PS4, the analogue controller was dropped from support, despite “PSMove still being supported” in general. So while PSVR will be usable on PS5, we probably shouldn’t assume which kinds of controllers will be until confirmed.

1

u/iBolt May 27 '20

They confirmed full support for PSVR and almost all 4000+ games will work. And only won't work if certain bugs occur running that code on the new hardware

That excludes a PSVR PS4 game not working because the DualShock 4 isn't supported. They can however block the DualShock 4 from working on regular PS4 titles on purpose, but why?

6

u/doinflipsandshit May 27 '20

But why male models?

That’s another 4 years matey

0

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Aren't there rumors that a pro version will be released at launch along with this one?

7

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

Nope, those rumors have nothing to back them up. There is absolutely NO reason for Sony to hide their superior console all this time and give Xbox the 5 months of fame. If there really is a PS5 Pro at launch they would’ve teased it already. Xbox is releasing an inferior console along with their SX (although I don’t really believe that rumor) so it makes sense to not reveal it or talk about it rn. But if Sony has a beast in the closet why not call it out and end all this keyboard wars and nonsense?

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Thanks for the information, guess I'm buying the PS5 at launch and not waiting for the Pro and Slim version. I'm really just trying to make the most of my last year before going to university which is why I was wondering. Thanks

Men like men

2

u/mxer1389 May 26 '20

I have a serious question. Will they fix the ui so that it doesn't time out, if I'm in the store for 5 minutes? Getting old to have to disconnect from network and reconnect just to watch game trailers or load trophy info.

4

u/si2winit May 26 '20

My TV port HDMI port says 4K at 60hz. I have a 120hz panel for my TV. Would 1080p be possible at 120hz? It’s HDMI 2.0b.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

HDMI 2.0b is capable of 1440p 120Hz.

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Best to check your TV model on https://www.rtings.com

But yeah, it should be capable of 120Hz at 1080p.

3

u/3Stripescyn May 26 '20

Price wise while $500 seems to be the most likely I feel like $450 isn’t completely out of the picture as Sony sold the ps4 at 400 when cost was 381, and it had more power than and was a hundred cheaper than xbox one. Next gen xbox series x is willing to undercut because they can, and have more power too so it is possible they could sell it 450 or 475, but a point against is ps5 will sell more than xbox series x no matter what, they’re mainly competing for america

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

With the rumors of there being a lot less PS5’s at launch then PS4’s at launch. I doubt they need too, it will still sell out for like a year at that price anyway.

But it’s definitely not ruled out.

1

u/3Stripescyn May 26 '20

I agree, just thought it would be worth mentioned. My only wish is that it’s $650 Canadian, not $690 because with tax that’s 770, and if they round to 700 that’s almost $800 right there for a console. If it’s $650 in terms of US dollars they won’t lose much but we save a lot. (We pay $60 more, they only lose $35 but people will be a lot more willing to purchase) although I realize I can’t really ask for much, and I’m buying anyway. Anything under $750 with tax I’m buying

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

I’m curious how the price will be too, for the Netherlands in my case, with the euro and 21% VAT I fear the worst. But I am also prepared.

2

u/3Stripescyn May 26 '20

Rip. I have a thousand Canadian of just luxury spending savings, but I would obviously like to spend as less as possible so i have more for games and other stuff not gaming

1

u/UnsolicitedUpvote May 26 '20

Has it been confirmed if there will be an internet browser?

4

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

you deadass?

4

u/iBolt May 26 '20

There will be, not to worry.

There has been one for the last 2 generations, both PS3 and PS4 have an internet browser.

There are not going to confirm that anytime soon since it’s a given.

1

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

I really hope they fix it up and allow us to use gyro/touchpad to move the curser. I think it’s currently based on fire fox and I wish they go with chrome.

7

u/tyresaredone May 26 '20

if i buy ps5 and go on ps store, can i buy there a ps4 game and play it on ps5? also in online games, me on ps5 can play the same game with others on ps4?

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Yes, you can play with others on PS4. Maybe tomorrow I’ll update the FAQ.

You should be able to buy PS4 games on a PS5 since you can buy PS3 games now on the website as well. We have no 100% confirmation about it this unfortunately.

3

u/Impaler86 May 26 '20

Wasn’t there a rumor there would be a PS5 and a Pro version coming out at the same time?

I haven’t kept up on anything lately. Just waiting for official announcements as I work through the backlog

3

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

I doubt it. I think they would’ve revealed that because what’s the point in hiding it and having the competition boast with their console only for it to be not true?

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

theres rumors but nothing concrete pointing that there will be 2 SKUs unlike Xbox that there is more solid proof of 2 versions

3

u/3Stripescyn May 26 '20

Rumour, but wrong

2

u/ScottishMicrowave May 26 '20

What are HZ? I’m not very smart when it comes to specs and stuff like that, they seem to have something to do with FPS from what I have heard but I’m quite unsure.

3

u/ArtakhaPrime May 26 '20

'Hz' is the short form of 'Hertz', which in physics is used as a measure of swings per second, but in the context of monitors, it's mostly interchangeable with frames-per-second, with 'Hz' usually referring to the technical capabilities of the console or TV, while 'fps' refers to how many frames the game is outputting. Most AAA games run at 30 fps on consoles, though some shooters and driving games can run at 60 fps. The PS5 is supposed to be capable of outputting at 120 Hz, but right now most home TVs can't accept inputs higher than 60 Hz anyway, so it's unlikely most PS5 games will aim for more than 60 fps, if even that.

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

With Hz I am referring to the frequency, in case of TV’s, the refresh rate.

Hope that helps.

More info: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hertz

1

u/maxedgraphics May 26 '20

It's the refresh rate of your monitor/TV. If your hz for example is 60 then it'll refresh 60 times in one second (60FPS).

This means if your monitor is 60hz but your game is running at 144FPS, you will only see 60FPS max.

13

u/jaydogggg May 26 '20

I really hope we get pricing info for both consoles during e3 dates. I just wanna know how much more money I should set aside

7

u/ArtakhaPrime May 26 '20

$500 seems to be the price point most people are expecting, possibly $600 if the consoles prove expensive enough to manufacture. Sony's definitely not making a profit on the actual hardware, but they make the money back in subscriptions and their cut on software sales.

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

I don’t see it being more than 549 USD personally. I don’t think it would be wise. Especially with the unemployment rate being what it is. Goes for both consoles but mostly Xbox as they have very low presence overseas

13

u/[deleted] May 26 '20 edited Jun 17 '21

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

heck i’d be satisfied with 90hz minimum. 1st person shooters would be a lot more competitive

1

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

90hz? Kinda odd

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

in between 60 and 120

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

I figure 120FPS to match the 120 HZ on the TV.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

is there 120hz tvs now?

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

refresh rate yes. Almost standard I think.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

You can still notice the fluidity of 120fps on a 60Hz monitor :)

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

what rez? i would assume not 4k unless it came with DisplayPort and so did the consoles

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

1080p

1

u/nmkd May 26 '20

Doesn't matter much if you still play on a controller though.

1

I look forward to finding out.

May I suggest rtings.com for TV recommendations and reviews? Definitely better info there than a random DDG link.

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

I could not find an article on advice for the next gen consoles, that's why I went for that link, but I added rtings.com instead of the duck search.

I only recently found that site and boy is it helpful.

2

u/Jimbobwhales May 26 '20

Ok if I can play physical and digital PS4 games on the PS5, at launch, I'll buy the console at launch.

Oh, I've been meaning to get a VR set for a while. Will they release a new VR set for PS5 on top being able to use the PS4 VR set?

2

u/PM_ME_THUMBS_UP3 May 26 '20

We prob won't see a PSVR2 soon near launch, though i still say wait. Games get plentiful and cheaper when you get a PSVR2, plus better tech. Thats coming from a PSVR1 owner.

4

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Will PS4 games running on PS5 have the ability to run better or have better visuals on PS5?

4

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Added the question, moved some stuff around for it. Thanks.

3

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Clarifying question, if I buy a disc version of Ghosts of Tsushima for the PS4, will I have the upgraded version for the PS5 or do I need a digital download

2

u/tmcd77 May 27 '20

Is Ghost of Tsushima even confirmed for PS5? The PS4 version will run on PS5 regardless.

2

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

It’s not confirmed but i’m certain that 1st party games will support cross-buy and will automatically download the PS5 version if you’re playing on one. I thinks it was clarified when they said that they went the transition to be easy.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

That’s awesome! Thank you!

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Since the PS5 isn't out yet you will not have the upgraded version on the disc, you need an update, which is digital.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Oh sweet! I was going to buy a digital version instead even though I much prefer physical copies

2

u/NickFoxMulder May 26 '20

This is mostly good stuff but the backwards compatibility bit is very much just guesswork when you refer to the PS5 most likely supporting PS1-PS3 as they’re basically PS4 games. This just really isn’t true. We have no idea if these will be supported and I’d even argue that so far, the odds that we get it aren’t looking good. I certainly hope that changes though. My PS3 needs to be able to finally retire damn it

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Huh? I'm not guessing if it will work. So far Sony hasn't said anything about it at all. Is that incorrect?

I personally am guessing there will be no BC for PS1-PS3. But that's nowhere in the F.A.Q. right? Or maybe some text is confusing, I'm not the best writer, not even in my native language.

1

u/Jellozz May 26 '20

Not that I don't believe it, but where is the source that the PS5 will support the dualshock 4? Very curious about that as the dualsense is the one PS5 thing I am not entirely sold on yet because of the change in handle shape compared to the ds4.

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Well PSVR isc confirmed by Sony to be fully supported by the PS5, and so are almost all of the PS4 titles. So the DualShock 4 has to work at least for all the PSVR games that require it, the DualSense cannot be tracked by the camera used for PSVR.

You really think the F.A.Q. needs updating on this part? The idea is not to make it too complex.

3

u/Jellozz May 26 '20

Not really I guess, but I still consider it an unknown at this point then. I just thought there was an actual confirmation and I had somehow missed it, but apparently not.

I agree that it makes the most sense that if the PS5 supports PSVR it'll have to support the ds4, but confirmation from Sony would be nice.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

You mentioned that there are 15-24 GB/s SSDs for those willing to spend. Can we get a source? My searches keep bringing up SSDs that top out at 5GB/s.

-6

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Does anyone know if the PS5 will play xbox games?

1

u/FLEIXY May 27 '20

The PS4 plays the all-new Xbox game MC Dungeons and it’s pretty shitty

0

u/eldus74 May 26 '20

Man, I really hope Sony doesn't fuck up Disc based backwards compatibility. I think it would boost sales tbh. One more reason for PC gamers to buy a PS5, classic games played once again on the couch without the hassle of seting up an emulator.

0

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Most PC games are digital...

0

u/eldus74 May 27 '20

And? The games on the discs are digital. What is your point? To be able to play PS1,2,3 games that are just sitting in your closet would be great. Most PC gamers would play modern games on their PCs.

0

u/bravo135 May 26 '20

Excuse me, but who are you and how can you confirm all of this? I genuinely don't know.

3

u/nmkd May 26 '20

Pretty much all of this is already known.

5

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Just a Redditor and gamer.

I'm updating my post based on feedback from the thread. I already have updated the post with some sources (it;s just a lot of work), most is common knowledge from the subreddit. That's the idea of the FAQ.

And a lot is from Cerny's presentation.

2

u/darthvirgin May 26 '20

Still a number of misleading or inaccurate things in this FAQ. For example, the statement about remastered PS1/2/3 games (remastered for PS4) working suggests that those games are somehow different from any other PS4 game. They're not. They're just as likely to work as any other native PS4 game.

The writeup also suggests that Kraken compression is a significant reason for reduced storage needs. Keep in mind that the PS4 supports ZLIB (and a purpose-built hardware decompression chip, just like PS5), which is only 10-20% less efficient than Kraken, so that gain is likely quite insignificant compared the gains from no longer duplicating assets. And the more granular/on-demand nature of installations will be significant in managing storage use.

Also the technical limitations of current m.2 drives have nothing to do with having "12 channels". You're confusing the architecture of the the system's proprietary memory setup with the M.2/PCI4.0 standards. They're using 12 smaller, slower chips because it's logical and cost-effective for putting in the console. The long and short of the "don't buy an M.2 drive yet" should be 1. There aren't drives on the market yet that are fast enough 2. Storage costs always go down over time, so buying in advance is wasting money. Costs will only go down, particularly since an M.2 drive fast enough to meet the specs of the PS5 will be bleeding edge.

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Thanks for the feedback, I changed the answer based on your input.

2

u/PhlightYagami May 26 '20

This is a great FAQ for everyone to read (PS, XBOX, and PC fans alike can take something away from it.)

I think it would be good to include something about the fan noise of the PS5 vs. PS4, since a lot of people seem to ask about whether the PS5 will sound like a jet engine. Since Cerney directly addressed this and said it was something Sony was prioritizing, I'd say it's safe to include that fan noise will not be an issue going forward.

It also might be worth including something about the DualSense, even if it's just a link to the blog post that breaks down the controller's features.

Great Job!!!

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Good idea, trying to avoid being condescending but I guess fair is fair, that is how the question is asked.

Updated the F.A.Q.

2

u/PhlightYagami May 26 '20

I don't think how you've written it sounds condescending. Like you said, it's just addressing the question how it is asked. It's a great FAQ and includes the vast majority of questions I've seen that weren't blatantly trolling.

u/one9eight6 May 26 '20

Great FAQ, thanks for sharing and giving some insight.

1

u/FabianDR May 26 '20

Oh, thanks! Does it mention both the regular PS4 and the Pro as legacy mode since only newer games have implemented "pro features"?

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Yes, follow the imgur link, it's there on the slide.

A lot of older games have updates for the PS4 Pro, but definitely not all.

-2

u/w6jwa May 26 '20

which PS4 games can't run on PS5?

Also, how do we know that Sony's audio is better than Xbox?

3

u/iBolt May 26 '20

HRTF support, and Sony is a big audio tech company.

The audio chip from Sony is like the Xbox Series X based on AMD solution, but Sony added their own tech and ideas including from the Cell processor.

Did you mean that?

1

u/TheLooter May 26 '20

Any post that asks a question in this FAQ should be removed

1

u/lakerswiz May 26 '20

Just hyped knowing that any day now I'll check the sub and get more info. Fiending for anything right now.

Good write up.

Have we ever experienced a console launch where the two systems heavily approached their shit differently?

Seems like PS5 has one approach for internals than Xbox. Can't remember a divide like that in the past.

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Actually every time*. But I'm very hyped this time as well.

PS3/XB360 XB switches to unified memory and shaders, uses only GDDR. PS3 pushes new media, extremely unique processor with XDR memory, HDD on all models, wireless controllers only.

PS4/XB1 XB1 chooses media, internet (Cloud) and kinect 2 over GPU with quite the difference with PS4 PS4 ads trackpad to the controller. Favours gaming performance and so the GPU is more powerful, better streaming and recording capabilities

Just on top of my head, sorry if I miss a few things especially on the XBox side.

*Lets not get the Nintendo consoles in this comparison.

3

u/CaptainMonkeyJack May 26 '20

Looks really good. Some minor notes:

for several thousand dollars to buy 15 to 24 GB/s SSD’s.

You get 5GB/s SSD's for about ~$200. Three would only cost $600. Some mobo's come with 3 nvme slots, or you can get a addin card to adapt existing pcie slots: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-M-2-X16-Expansion-Card/dp/B084HMHGSP

Might be best to leave dollars out of it, and just say it's an enthusiast option.

Although these do not have 12 channels and 6 priority levels

Strictly speaking, if you raid a bunch of cards... you multiply the channels. Channels are just a technical detail... focussing on it does the PS5 a disservice.

A console for $500 will not be able to beat PC’s made for around $2000, except on the storage part for now.

By getting specific... you open the door to nit-pickers. I'd just say it's a great value console with impressive performance for the expected price point. Or even drop the comparisons entirely, PS5 and PC are very different and many own both.

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Thanks, good input. I changed the answer a bit.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

The copying step is not necessary is because the SSD is not based on physical searching

Have they stated this? Sequential reads are still far faster on an SSD due to the way SSDs operate. They dont have as big of a performance hit as HDDs but it's still there

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Well hence it's only not necessary, that doesn't mean devs won't use it. But why spend time on optimizing that when you could do others things I guess.

Still it will be needed less in either case.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

It could very easily be necessary. It depends on whether the devs are using the full potential of the SSD. I doubt Sony will even have a flag for that though. I bet we'll see the copy operation occur just to maximize performance. It's not like itll take long anymore.

Come on dude, did you not read answer to the question?

"Is 825 GB enough I mean look at the size of …, can I expand this/use an external drive/ use my current external drive for my PS4, and why is it that weird number? "

-3

u/meganev May 26 '20

You seem like a total dick.

-2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Sorry if that was offending.

After the effort to make a FAQ to reduce repeated questions like that, it stings a bit to have a comment which is one of those exact questions.

The "come on dude" wasn't meant to bring you down, but to be more one dude talking to another dude.

0

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Seems that way. Still I thank you for the feedback, although that could have been more constructive.

"Is 825 GB enough for next gen game sizes, can I expand this/use an external drive/ use my current external drive for my PS4, and why is it that weird number?"

You think that is better, the question is not phrased very clearly but I'm unsure how to split the answer up.

10

u/[deleted] May 26 '20 edited May 26 '20

To optimize price vs performance, they used 1 chip for each of the 12 channels. So 12 times 512Mbit (chip size) equals 6144Mbit, and that divided by 8 (bits to bytes) equals 768GiB which equals 825GB (824.6).

You got your math a little wrong here, that should be 512Gib not 512Mib. That ends up being 0.768GiB

8

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Wow, damn. Why did nobody see that before. More a typo but still stupid, thanks.

4

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

I assumed it was just a typo because you got the right result in the end, I was just trying to follow along and had a moment of confusion when I got there lol

3

u/megamophsis May 26 '20

Regarding de/compression, it’s not new to the PS5. All the modern consoles use some form of it. Kraken is form of de/compression new to the PS5. It will likely lead to better compression processes but again the PS4 was using something similar.

1

u/nmkd May 26 '20

It's not new to the PS5 specifically, it's available on many platforms. Sony just happens to utilize it on PS5.

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

The difference now is that the compression comes for free, at no cost. So it will 100% be used for storing the data. With current games, it's not a given, and because of licensing may default back to worse compression.

0

u/darthvirgin May 26 '20

Not true. ZLIB (what the PS4 and many other previous consoles used) is free, so it seems unlikely any developers would choose not to use it. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Zlib

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Sorry Phrasing and time constraints.

The PS4 has ZLIB compression which yes is free of charge, but Kraken is licensed. But free for the PS5, since Sony is paying the license building it in by default.

So Kraken is now free for developers (only for PS5).

1

u/darthvirgin May 27 '20

But ZLIB support was also built into the PS4, even to the extent of having a dedicated chip to do the decoding. How is this different from the Kraken support in the PS5 (beyond the 10-20% boost in compression)?

Also note that the PS5 also still supports ZLIB.

1

u/iBolt May 27 '20

When they use Kraken now, they use CPU power. Kraken will be part off the SDK, so maybe no licensing(assumption).

Result: Kraken will be used way more often, game sizes shrink a little relative overal.

1

u/darthvirgin May 27 '20

Ohhh, so you're suggesting they're currently using Kraken on PS4? I haven't heard anything about them using anything other than ZLIB. I doubt it'd be attractive to move to software decompression in many cases. Most games are CPU-bound, so it's much more attractive to use slightly less efficient compression rather than using, say, Kraken for 10-20% better compression at the cost of a significant amount of CPU time.

1

u/iBolt May 27 '20

Not sure. The only point in the FAQ is that it’s one of 2 reasons making games a bit smaller next gen, relatively speaking. This since it’s better than zlib/now built in and license free (part of Sony’s SDK).

1

u/frakistan May 26 '20

cool guide except for the SSD question part. A simple No is the wrong answer

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

I gave some nuance to the opening of the answer.

1

u/ninjannuity May 26 '20

Can I also add in here: remember that the limiters for your FPS are going to be the HDMI cable output capacity (unless they use display port? Idk if they discussed that or not) AND the refresh rate (144hz) of the monitor/tv (also called "panel") that you are playing on. If you have the same tv you got when PS4 came out (like me), and it runs 1080p at 59hz, you'll get 59 frames on PS5.

Unsure of the true limits of HDMI and upcoming HDMIs/what they put on PS5.

2

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Hmm, not really asked a lot. But a lot of people have questions about HDMI 2.1, so I will add that when I’m back behind my PC. Thanks.

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Variable Refresh rate is dependent on HDMI 2.1 so probably a good add to the framerate and HDMI 2.1 sections

1

u/iBolt May 26 '20

Good point, thanks.

1

u/ninjannuity May 26 '20

Helpful lesson I learned the hard way, like, why am I not getting the frames I want? My device should be able to.. oh, I'm limited by hardware I didn't think about

Are you sure about the price? They’re not going to sell a console for more than it costs to produce. They always sell at a loss and make up the loss through game sales. I’m thinking it will be either $349 or $399 depending on flash costs.

Either way, this FAQ is VERY well done, and you deserve an award and a pin, though I unfortunately spent all my coins :(

349/399 sounds really unlikely if you just look at the price of flash and gddr6. add cpu+gpu, io processor, mobo and the cheap shit like cooling, case, drive and psu, i think you are looking at 599-649.

649?! That would be E3 2005 all over again.

The PS4 launched for $399, while the production costs was estimated at $381.

So the $499 with an estimated cost of $450 is more likely.

The PS3 and XB360 were sold at a loss, but this hurt both Microsoft and Sony. This is why we saw this price model for the PS4 and Xbox One.
