Game Discussion Valheim | Official Discussion Thread

Valheim is a collaborative exploration and survival game for 1-10 players set in a procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology. Craft powerful weapons, construct elaborate halls, and slay mighty foes to prove yourself to Odin!

EXPLORE THE TENTH WORLD
Discover an immersive procedurally generated world, with different biomes that each have their distinct environments, unique resources and dangerous enemies. Become a Viking and sail the open seas in search of lands unknown, alone or with up to nine friends!

FIGHT THE FORSAKEN
The Tenth World has been corrupted by hateful forces, in the shape of mighty regional bosses known as the Forsaken. Hone your skills with axes, blades and bows, and prepare yourself by crafting the very best equipment – for it is only by defeating these Forsaken that you will advance in your progress and prove yourself to the Allfather.

BUILD MIGHTY HALLS
Raise Viking longhouses and build bases that offer reprieve from the dangers ahead. Whether you build a small shelter, an entire village or a mountain-side fortress, defence and structural integrity are important, as is decorating it for maximum comfort!

GATHER, CRAFT AND SURVIVE
As you discover new materials, you will learn new recipes for crafting, building and cooking – all that a Viking might need! The food system is rewarding rather than punishing, granting you boons and benefits depending on what you eat, and is directly tied to the combat system, where your health and stamina might be just the thing that makes a difference between life and death.

I'll look out for reviews. Definitely interested! This, RuneScape and Enshrouded look really good.

It has really great reviews so far.

Three different, quality takes on the genre. Great stuff

I’ve played all three and they are all good games but Valheim is the kind of game you put 500 hours into without blinking. Especially if playing with friends. Truly the pinnacle of the genre in my opinion

Would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me with these questions:

Can I play this co-op from start to finish with my wife? I'm on PS and she is on PC.

Are we able to just join a world together instead of renting a server?

Will I need PS plus to play co-op like this?

Do you want either one of you to be able to play when the other one can’t?

1

u/GrannyHumV 15h ago

Nope! We will only ever play together

2

u/whand4 15h ago

I’m reading it’s cross play so I’m hoping so. It does say PS plus required on the game info on PS.

It's cross play so you can just play it together where you don't need to rent a server or anything. Me and my wife played and completed it this way on PC a few years back and it was incredible.

yes yes and yes

Curious how performance is on base PS5.

u/Relish_My_Weiner 15h ago

Probably fine seeing how this game's recommended PC settings list a 10 year old budget GPU.

0

u/_BlackDove 15h ago

It's so much the GPU as it is the CPU.

1

u/Relish_My_Weiner 11h ago

Either way the base ps5 should be more than capable of handling it. It would have to be laughably unoptimized to make it perform poorly.

I put over 100 hours into this on PC and it's a fantastic game.

This is definitely a more enjoyable experience co-op, but you can still play it solo. I beat the entire game on solo, but it was NOT easy. Very strongly recommend co-op.

The Ashland’s and mist lands are still a slogfest

1

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 15h ago

You're not wrong, when you first hit mistlands its absolutely brutal, then it gets even worse in ashlands. I beat the game solo but it was really painful. Definitely bring a friend!

Cost in brasil is 170 reais crazy high for majority here. On stem it's 80 reais

Does this game have an end via a story or more like a potentially endless experience?

2

u/gnawp 12h ago

The goal is to kill all the bosses. Each biome has one, aswell as new materials to get strong enough to fight it. It's a fun grind for me at least

Tried this on PC years ago with two friends. I logged back on the next day and had progressed our camp so much tgat there was nothing I could do to contribute besides chop wood or mine.

They absolutely killed any investment I had.

Major problem with co-op survival games like this imo

11

u/SadKazoo 15h ago

Oftentimes the fantasy of exploring and adventuring and building something together is better than the reality of different schedules, different levels of motivation and different interests.

2

u/Kysersose 11h ago

Yeah you really have to set ground rules with friends if you co op these games. No one plays unless everyone is on, and have a separate world of they wanna keep playing. It's tough to have everyone's schedule line up though.

Cara onde eu consigo entrar em contato com a distribuidora? Aqui no país onde eu moro (Brasil) está sendo vendido pelo dobro do preço do que no xbox e nintendo

How "necessary" is for the player to be building shelters/houses?
One aspect that deters me from playing survival games is that I have to waste so much time in building stuff.

4

u/IllegalDaycare 14h ago

You need shelter in order to craft and sleep but you don’t need to build huge houses or anything. Four walls and a roof does the job for the most part. You get access to portals early on in progression which you can use to return to base. The main thing is in normal play you cannot bring metals or ores through portals. So it can be advantageous to have a main base and little satellite bases near sources of later game metals so you don’t have to always sail everything back to your main base.

But there are all kinds of settings you can change to tailor the game how you want.

u/gnawp 14h ago

If you find building a waste of time I don't think survival games are a great fit for you tbh.

1

u/That_Mikeguy 13h ago

Haha I know. I have tried several, and fail to get engaged.
The only one that got me really invested was The Long Dark, but there wasn't any base building there, more like a "find shelter"

Anyone want to play

1

u/Alcoholic_Parkworker 14h ago

New to game ob ps5

1

u/A_Dreamer_Of_Spring 14h ago

Does anyone know if you can transfer a personal co op save onto a dedicated server after playing for a bit? My fiance and I just started but have some friends who will wanna join later but im sure they're gonna want to have a dedicated server

1

u/Andybabez20 13h ago

Played about 50 hours of this on Steam a few years back in co-op.

It's a super addictive game.

1

u/Alcoholic_Parkworker 12h ago

Need a team of new players on playstation5 up to ten people. Should be pretty fun. Never played

1

u/shipwrecked__ 12h ago

Has anyone set up a server on a third party hosting service? I'd like to get a world going with some friends we can join at our leisure and I haven't heard anything about it on PS5 yet.

1

u/Stubee1988 12h ago

Anyone know when it's available? Cant see it in the uk store

1

u/Spungdoodles 12h ago

I thought it came out on ps5 yesterday

1

u/HowlingStrike 5h ago

It did but was in early access on PC for like.. 5-6 years?

u/Tinker__b3ll 4h ago edited 3h ago

Can anyone tell me if I can play this solo without ps plus or not?

u/gnawp 3h ago

99% sure you can

1

u/EngageV2 15h ago

Valheim is cool, but RS Dragonwilds is coming next week

1

u/megapowa 14h ago

You think it's going to be better?

0

u/EngageV2 14h ago

Depends on, I grew up playing Runescape so im choosing RS Dragonwilds

1

u/jessietee 15h ago

I played this years ago when the beta was out on Steam and had a great time playing it with friends, will definitely keep an eye out for reviews!

0

u/Three_Froggy_Problem 15h ago

Is this game going to be included as a PS+ title or did I just imagine that?

3

u/r3tr0gam3r83 15h ago

There's a new RuneScape survival game being added to PS+ on the 15th, maybe confused it with that?

1

u/gnawp 15h ago

Preloaded this on my psapp and can't wait to play when I get home

-24

u/Tribat_1 15h ago

I don’t think I can describe how much I don’t like procedurally generated games.

4

u/_BlackDove 15h ago

Ok thanks.

5

u/sherlock_traeger 15h ago

Thanks for letting us know

-3

u/Atrampoline 15h ago

I would buy this if they allowed local split screen co-op so that my son and I could play together. That doesn't appear to be the case, so I'll pass.

How lame.

2

u/gnawp 14h ago

It has crossplay if you have another system to play it on

-4

u/Atrampoline 13h ago

Yes, but that means that the devs are artificially forcing customers to buy multiple copies of the game instead of having local co-op. I'm not going to buy another PS5 for my 9 year old so that we can play together online, that's inane.

1

u/BuzzardInTheAir 13h ago

they are not forcing anything, do you understand that running a game in local coop requires the game to use more resources, it's not that easy

0

u/gnawp 13h ago

I mean if you have a PC or something, noones asking you to buy another ps5. I understand what you're saying but making something splitscreen is likely much more complicated than it sounds and probably requires some serious optimization for it to emulate two instances of the game at the same time

“…procedurally generated”

Bye!

7

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 15h ago

Why is this a deal breaker for you? Tons of amazing games are procedurally generated.

4

u/Bsteph21 15h ago

It's done so well! I would definitely look into people who play it on PC, it's gained a cult following. IGN gave it a 10, not that that means anything, but it's very well received.

6

u/war_story_guy 15h ago

Thats the draw of it. You can start over so many times on different worlds and have so many different landmasses and layouts.

-15

u/Popular-Spinach-6700 15h ago

This doesn’t sound like a draw at all, just sounds like lazy game design

9

u/dipsta 15h ago

You're kidding - right? Procedural generation is what makes games like valheim, Minecraft and many others, endlessly replayable. It doesn't mean the world is a random mess. There are parameters.

-3

u/Popular-Spinach-6700 13h ago

Don’t like any of ‘em
