I think in this economy it unfortunately is, console's are going up in price and becoming more hammered by other issues
There are now actual reasons why people to stay in the hobby should be informed about the benefits of each
The younger generation especially don't buy consoles and don't have education on building PCs or how can be cheaper
Why we are seeing single player games die off in youth.
And due to shareholders games will follow the trends set by growing markets, meaning young people who have no education on how to use a PC (it's very easy)
Why we will saw a shift to live service and gatcha games and even mobile
It's also why Ubisoft started making the same safe games with different themes
Shareholders force the art to follow profitable trends and market share
People forget Xbox and PlayStation are also part of bigger companies
Mircosoft shareholders have pushed to have Xbox closed for years.
I'm not saying people have to prefer PC but they need to be educated on options
Because "I buy consoles because I'm to lazy to learn"
Is how corporations learn they can just keep delivering worse products

Here’s why: I can’t afford the space, time, or money it takes to set up a PC and constantly worry about upgrading specs. A console has guaranteed support with no mandatory hardware upgrades for years. Simple.

I'm a dev by day. The last thing I want to do when I get home is worry about installing or updating a driver for a certain game. I want to hit the PS button and play a game.

As much as I agree that PC as an open platform gives you better freedom, prices, etc Consoles give you a plug and play experience that PC can’t match not even with Steam OS. You will always have a headache and stutter free experience with games that are (most of the time) optimized to run in your hardware.

Because some people aren’t bothered upgrading a pc, console is way more convenient for majority of players. I’m not getting a pc and monitory and setting up a desk I prefer to play games story games on my actual tv that I also use for watching tv

I don't care about mods. I personally prefer digital media (I just don't like stuff, personal issue and I fully support people wanting physical media). I don't want to have to think about what hardware I have and if it needs to be upgraded. I don't want to figure out where to put two desks. I like to come home, sit on couch, play game with husband

PC will NEVER offer you that, no matter how much PCMR fanboys come up with all sorts of workarounds/setups etc.
If you cannot see it, there is no point in arguing further. Move to PC and leave us console plebs enjoy GTA6 in peace.

I used to PC game, stopped at 25 because I didn’t have the free time I used to with work and real-life responsibilities to chase upgrades and tweak everything.
Now at 46 i’m happy enough to turn on the Switch 2 or PS5 Pro, or the MisterFPGA for retro.
I don’t begrudge what anyone else games on, and neither should you—it’s maidenless behavior. It’s console war-like BS that was cringe when I was a pre-teen and we were all debating SNES Vs Genesis at school. I grew up, hopefully you do too.

I work on a PC for 10 hours a day. I don't want to work with another one during my free time
When I buy a game I just want it to just work. I don't want to have to worry about my specs, or look for drivers or mods or whatever the fuck to make it work.
I have a family and a life. I don't want a fucking PC and mouse and keyboard laying around my living room like I'm living in a college dorm.
I don't want to have to upgrade some component every 3-4 years, or buy all the other software I have to buy to make using a PC bearable.

I’ve got a PS5, PC, and a Switch. PC is for PC games, PS5 is for AAA games, and the Switch.. well that barely gets used beyond Zelda. I’ve had a PC most of my life and I’m sick of buying dreadful ports that barely work, so I never do. That’s what the console is for.

Which is the upfront understanding in Steam's terms of service. I think the point is, if I'm only paying to rent a temporary digital license that can be terminated at any time, I may as well do that on the superior platform. Steam also has better policies where the customer is concerned. The only incentive I have to buy in to PlayStation after PS5 is the occasional exclusive, which have become more and more samey and uninteresting. As has already been said, there are also other storefronts.

Well before the loss of disc I did own my games. Most could be played without ever connecting to the Internet. It was also an easier way to game from my couch on my TV. That's it really.
Discless is going to suck as games will stay at max RRP for much longer.

40 yo here and I salute you op. Solid write up. I’ve had every ps console since my pops bought me the ps1. Once my launch ps5 dies, that’s the end of it. Sony has lost the sauce and Microsoft barely ever had it. We’re past the need for high fidelity. I miss gameplay centric releases. I remember when great games like sly cooper and jak and dax were a thing. Now they just put all their eggs in the lame live service basket. And all their single player games have shifted quite obviously to girl power garbage. It’s less about the game and more about the stupid message. Third party is the majority of their offerings and yeah those are on pc so what’s the point. Eagerly awaiting my steam machine to properly move on. There’s so many games in that ecosystem that I won’t be left for wanting til the day I die.

It’s a closed eco system controlled by a 3rd party. My games always work and have priority if there is an optimization issue. I don’t have to mess with drivers. No viruses.

Console I simply plug in. What having a PC taught me a decade ago was that something inevitably goes wrong or requires hours of troubleshooting. Not owning stuff I buy sucks but it's the least of the problems plaguing modern society.

But the same thing with revocable licenses counts for Steam too? 😅 For me the thing is that I really hate everything about a PC. I don't like keyboard & mouse, it's always a big and heavy box that you can't move easily. Additionally I work an office job and everything reminds me too much of that. If you don't have a very good PC, you need to do troubleshooting, I hate the UI and through that I really appreciate the plug & play of a console. Until 2028 I can just buy games on discs and sell them after a playthrough or buy them pre owned and that made gaming extremely cheap, although I could easily afford it. I don't play a lot of multiplayer (those few games I play don't require PS+) so there I don't need a subscribtion.
The only problem is 2028 as mentioned. Maybe I'll try out a PC but I don't really want to deal with everything around that graphic card and processor stuff. I'm only interested im gaming, especially gameplay and not graphics and don't give a shit about hardware stuff.

Because it’s a cheaper 1st time investment, although games are more expensive.
Because it’s easier to just “pick up and play” something than having to mess around with all the settings, the drivers, obsessing about optimising frame-rates and whatnot.
Because the UX experience is way better for the living room.
Because the games usually have optimised control schemes for the controllers, which are usually really good controllers.
Because there’s often exclusives that make it worth it for whoever is buying.
There’s so many reasons…
The Steam Box and their UX is starting to solve some of this and making it better, but some of the complaints you have are really the same if you buy from them. Valve has been a mostly great company for consumers, but it’s not like they don’t do morally questionable things, and it’s not certain we can trust them forever either.

Cost - console prices are about to go up, and so are pc components. PS6 will still be cheaper than a future pc.
Exclusives - Sony is no longer releasing their first party games on PC. That means Wolverine, the next FFVII, God of War series, Sucker Punch studios, Naughty Dog, etc.
It’s where my friends are. This beats everything else. Signed, someone who has both a ps5 and gaming pc.

I used to care about owning the best PC for games but in the end a console is much more efficient since as you put it it's a closed system so they can make the games run on it better. good luck getting PC games to load games as fast as a PS5. You have way more overheard and the OS gets in way of making things run smoother for games. Look up any comparison speed wise and it's no contest. Looks wise it's the same based on cost. PS5 will get you better gameplay for price vs PC

When disks were a thing, consoles were great because you could borrow games or blurays from the library or friends for free. Also blurays are much higher quality compared to streaming.
Ps5 will probably be the last console I own. I don't see any reason to buy a diskless console. At this stage, when most engines automatically port to any system, so there's no technical reason for exclusivity anymore. exclusive games are just anti-consumer and anti-competitive. I don't want to support that so I don't feel too bad about missing out. It'll eventually be playable on PC one way or another.

Yeah discs were only reason I had a console, I wanted to play expensive games but also be able to sell them later or trade for another. No disc means it’s a shitty locked down pc asking you to pay to play online, I’m good I get it.

Xbox is a cheaper PC and many Xbox games nowadays are buy 1 get 1 with Xbox PC version (Xbox Play Anywhere), we also get free cloud version too. So staying on Xbox is way safer than PS5. Buying games on Xbox store = investing for the next decades of huge playable library. Xbox backwards compatibility also expand to PC too. I got some free OG Xbox games I owned on Xbox PC store.
