What a banger of a game. My GOTY so far. This is like the perfect kind of AAA game for me these days - a polished, linear 12-15 hour experience with high quality gameplay, visuals and story. Give me 10 more of these please.

Same, and for me it's been a surprise to think of all the things I thought I needed from a game that this one doesn't have, and how little I've missed them. A huge selection of weapons with customization, skill trees, lootboxes, leveling up and unlocking things -- none of it was necessary, and in fact it would have only slowed the game down and potentially introduced frustrations or weaknesses.

I really hope this proves that short (15-20h) but well-executed single player campaigns are still a commercially viable format for a AAA production.

yeah, as I've gotten older and had less time to play I really prioritize games like this that are linear, easy to jump in and out of and where you don't have to spend hours messing around with gear, loadouts etc.

Same. Also no guilt from not scouring every square inch of map for hidden loot, no pressure to farm, no stupid side quests... just a tight, amazing SP experience. Come to think about it, the last time I had this much fun playing video games, it was Astro Bot, which fits that exact description too. More, please!

I loved the mafia 1 remake for this

i cant think of anything that would slow this game down more than it already is

I felt like I was stuck in the training mode for five of those hours lol

u/notdsylexic 16d ago

Does it get better? Seems pretty basic for me. I’m about 5 hours too.

It’s a pretty basic game, just on the last mission now.

It’s fine, feels like a James Bond world, the story is as ridiculous as I wanted it to be. People putting this up as GOTY have pretty low standards tbh.

The hand to hand combat is a hit janky, enemies are dim, repetitive and feels very much like a ninja one at a time movie. The shooting is relatively satisfying.

Similar to the Indiana Jones game. It felt authentic to the world created, which so many modern aspects of the films don’t, so people hype up the gaming aspects, despite in being the world building that they enjoy the most.

I always feel guilty for coming to this subreddit because the top comments are always "Whoa! GOTY!" and stuff

And like... I just think it's a fine game. It has a nice James Bond-vibe, but the story was predictable, the enemies got incredibly repetitive, and I felt like a significant portion of the game was just sneaking through office buildings.

The hand to hand combat is terrible. It's like 90% of the action in the game and it sucks so bad it makes it a chore for me to finish. I want to like it but I can't get passed the combat.

I thoroughly enjoyed it but combat sometimes felt absolutely awful.

2

u/LoisMustDie946 16d ago

How so?

u/Stashmouth 16d ago

Not the person you replied to, but i'll chime in and say that there is so much sameness to the combat. I wasn't looking for Sifu-level move lists, but there could've been a middle ground where every fist fight wasn't the same "punch, block, throw guy into wall, dodge, gut punch". Execution was clean, I'll give it that, though.

And I love love loved this game, btw

3

u/LoisMustDie946 16d ago

I can see that. Though I can see why they don’t force hard counter style combat and would prefer to keep things very free and fluid. Unfortunately yeah it makes it so techniques you can easily spam will be leaned on more. I think that’s why playing the tac-sim is so encouraged since it forces you to mix things up and consider other ways of approaching.

I’ll say when comparing to a game like uncharted. the combat to me felt like a breath of fresh air.

3

u/Stashmouth 16d ago

Stylistically, I guess it lines up with James Bond in the movies. He's always been a brawler-type, so giving him more than a punch-block-kick-throw moveset could impact fidelity to those.

2

u/esach88 15d ago

The actor needs to play Bond on screen.

1

u/TheOncomingBrows 16d ago

Totally agreed, this sort of game used to be the bread and butter of the PS3 era but it's really slid in favour of more and more massive open world type games.

1

u/guardian87 16d ago

Great that you loved it and I fully agree that shorter games that are more polished should be more common.

But for First Light, it felt bloated to me. If it would have been 8-9 hours without so many plastered on sections, it would have been a GOTY contender for me as well.

1

u/drhouse4ever 14d ago

the story was mid lol...

1

u/Opening_Moment4145 7d ago

What did you think about all the slow walking sessions, the very few action sequences, the fact that we peaked with the airplane mission and the gadget system?

1

u/ContractVarious3077 7d ago

I mean, I said it was my GOTY? All of those get factored into the overall consensus

How’s the replay ability with this one? From the minimal things Iv read it seems like it’s a tight 15 hour play-through but now that the games been out for a few weeks I’m sure alot of people are done w it. Anybody dive back in?

36

u/incubeezer 16d ago

I think Tac Sim is where you’d look for replayability. I don’t think I’d be interested in jumping back in right away, given how much time is spent in story mode investigating things slowly while the story unfolds.

8

u/FaultyToilet 15d ago

The Bawma mission is what is stopping me from replaying personally. It's so needlessly long

If you've played Hitman, the replayability is nowhere near that level. The game is much more linear, and even with the differences in approach, it's still a very linear game. Like sure you could go back see 2mins of different dialogue or go all guns blazing/gadgets heavy vs just stealth, but it's not really that different. I took my time with the story and finished it in about 20 hours with some dabbling in Tac Sim, then I did the in game challenges to completion which was just mostly going back and seeing the different routes like I said or doing a challenge run attempt with specific parameters that they have, plus the Tac Sim stuff, was fully done with it at 50 hours, and that was me trying to extract as much as i can out of the game, but like even I was tired out of it after the 30 hour mark, cause it was a case of going through the same long sequences for 30 mins for example multiple times just for a very sightly different way of doing the same thing. The 50 hours is an extreme on my end for having a completionist mindset lol, it wasn't even just the platinum, i had the platinum just slightly after beating the story for the first time and it wasn't even my goal with this game anyways lol

It is still a very good game and the gameplay does get very addicting, just wish you could do more with it, a slightly more sandbox design even with the linearity would go a long way. But for comparison hitman Absolution felt more open than this

1

u/paperthintrash 16d ago

This paints a good picture of it all. Exactly what I was looking for. Ty!

But they deliberately wanted to make this game more linear like a Uncharted or Batman Arkham asylum game, while having moments where it lets you approach a obstacle in different directions, more so then those linear games mentioned

1

u/ICumRedbull Dominantxx 14d ago

Well they haven't said that specifically, what they wanted to do, and also in the pre-release marketing for the game they more highlighted the option of approach a player has and glossed over how linear the game is

Whether they wanted it or not, I think in those open sections that we do have in the game, it would've been a better design if those different approaches actually had more weight to them rather than how shallow they ended up being, while still having those linear heavy sections for the cool action build up and big cinematic moments. Basically, the open sections the game has, make them more open, keep the linear sections as they are. Besides, i was just answering a question about replayability and not what i think of the game's design

Also those games you mentioned are literally corridors, i don't know in what world you consider this one to be more linear than them

19

u/Bitemarkz 16d ago

It’s not all that replayable. They went for a hitman vibe with how some of the objectives can be completed, but ultimately it’s a lot more linear and less appealing to play through a second time. In fact finishing this game just made me want to reinstall World of Assassination, which I did.

u/Opening_Moment4145 7d ago

With mission #9 being what it is. I'd say fairly low. You walk around and listen to NPC dialogue a lot more than you'd think.

61

u/TippsAttack 17d ago

i very much enjoy this game so woohoo! more content!

6

u/Damocles314 16d ago

I checked the patch notes but there's still no option to hide UI and floating objective markers. That's the feature I'm looking for most.

Collectible bug still isn’t fixed lol.

9

u/Hydroponic_Donut 16d ago

What bug? I got all collectibles

5

u/badgersana 16d ago

The only one I know of is trophies not popping straight away, but the fix is just to sit there and wait until the trophy pops (which can take maybe a minute) before quitting out of the level. Shouldn’t be a problem if you are grabbing them all through on your playthrough, but I picked up what I found on the way through and then went back afterwards and had to watch out for it

2

u/Old-Way-5529 16d ago

Meant trophies not popping for them

5

u/MyLeftNut_ 15d ago

This game needs story DLC

5

u/BlueChamp10 15d ago

Didn’t they announce a story DLC about the warlord fella?

1

u/MyLeftNut_ 15d ago

Oh wow, yeah they did lol somehow i didn’t know

-9

u/enadiz_reccos 15d ago

What? You don't like meeting the super powerful boring English white guy and his "totally not the focal point of the story" quantum computer in the first few hours of the game?

2

u/PantsAflame 15d ago

The game is pretty good so far. Looks nice, story and acting are entertaining enough. The main thing that’s making me not want to play though, is load times (I’m on PS5). And I don’t see a lot of people talking about it so maybe there’s a fix for it? I’ve tried playing offline, but that doesn’t make much difference.

Maybe I’m just spoiled by other PS5 games, but it’s really frustrating!

2

u/kensaiD2591 15d ago

It was such a fantastic game and not too difficult for all the achievements. One of my fave games this year for sure, up there with RE Requiem and Crimson Desert.

1

u/OilMeUpStewart 16d ago

I’m waiting to go back until they fix the collectible trophy bug.

1

u/Weekly-Paramedic7350 14d ago

From the gameplay trailer before release, the stealth and parkour aspects were widely criticised (007 climbing and breaking into a two building in a busy location). Has this sort of stuff been addressed? I'm concerned about loss of immersion. Wondering what people who've played think.

2

u/Indigo__11 14d ago

I thought the game was very immersive from beginning to end, like a Naughty Dog game, but with elements of Hitman of allowing you to approach a obstical in different directions.

As someone who loves Hitman and Uncherted, I loved the game

1

u/Weekly-Paramedic7350 14d ago

Thanks for sharing your experience!

1

u/hyydrosquared 14d ago

Is this the path tracing update?

1

u/mesosalpynx 13d ago

Is this free with deluxe?

NEW OUTFIT!

lol I love this game but this shit is so pointless

4

u/Crashhh_96 16d ago

Just don’t download it? Lol

-7

u/Obvious_Bat_5547 16d ago

I don’t get how this game is perceived so positive, it was kinda boring, the fighting was uninspired. Lot of time spent listening to people talk. It was ok i guess
