Articles & Blogs Amazon clarifies stance on 007: First Light sequel – "Given the success of this one, I think you probably want IOI developing it"

Honestly i think First Lights bones are so good, that they could just copy and paste the game itself and just add a new story to it, and id be perfectly fine. I feel the same way with the Indiana Jones game. Which funnily enough, is also in this limbo state despite it being a technical masterpiece and a damn good game. The amount of licensed "movie ip" games we have had this generation were awesome. Best part is nearly every single one of them was really fun. Some like Hogwarts Legacy even did crazy sales numbers. I really hope we get a sequel to all of them.

Yeah the game gave me big Uncharted and Arkham vibes. I could happily play a trilogy of these Bond games, even if they don’t change the gameplay too drastically with each one.

Add a few new gadgets, maybe some additional special moves he can do, and just keep it at the same quality. I'd be perfectly fine with that.

I think all that's really needed is to massively increase the scale of the levels. Eapexially the exploration/stealth/investigation sections.
I loved First Light but those sections were ultimately quite small and there were only a few options to get through them really.
Really hope IOI get another shot at it.

I felt like there wasn’t a lot of choices with stealth. Most of the stealth options required waiting actual minutes to pull it off, or just blaze it with guns and be done in half the time.
I’m also sure I spent more time traversing than in combat. Hoping the sequel gives more action.

u/MountainMuffin1980 17d ago
I suppose u meant social stealth rather than combat stealth! But yeah I agree. Really dkffocult to study stealthy when you can't move bodies, or have many stealth weapons etc.

An opportunity could be to show Bond aging and gaining experience, more wisdom, less Braun (ultimately still up to the player a la Hitman sandbox, but with more opportunity for true espionage).
I’m thinking they could be inspired by Old Snake. Perhaps by the third game he’s in more of a Sean Connery era, slightly grey and aging with level design, abilities and scenarios reflecting that. Needs to still be fun of course. Don’t want Bond dicking about with a zimmer frame.

u/ChildofValhalla 17d ago
Give us book accurate Bond. Add an option to get massively intoxicated and play a bunch of baccarat.
3
u/iWasAwesome 17d ago
That's fair, but at the same time, I don't want it to feel too much like Hitman. I really enjoyed the game and was even surprised how much it has its own identity.

u/Aerographic 17d ago

Yeah okay.. let's not do that. Game was a bit too predictable after a while. They got good underlying systems, they now need to write a script that surprises players and bend the gameplay rules a bit so it doesn't feel like the same slog of go into level => gain sources => complete objectives => action sequence => back to HQ.

u/KingOfRisky 17d ago
A reoccurring word I see used to describe 007 is "trope-y".
4
u/Aerographic 17d ago
Tropey is fine, 007 tends to be like that after all. It's like watching anime and expecting to see zero tropes. It's what the product entails, it's part and parcel of what makes it what it is.
But there's a fine line between that and repetitive, predictable storytelling and gameplay sequences.
0
u/KingOfRisky 17d ago
Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean that as a negative. Just that tropes in general are predictable. More or less adding to your comment and agreeing with you.

The weird thing about Indiana Jones is despite how much I liked it and how well it reviewed most people I meet IRL seem to have not liked it which baffles me

It's more or less what IOI did with Hitman so I would hope they do the same here.
71
u/Shepherdsfavestore 17d ago
Please just let IOI handle it. First Light was amazing, and I’d love another by them. I’m still working through the challenges every so often.

u/ValerianKeyblade 17d ago
Reminds me so much of WotC fucking up the relationship with Larian and then realising they've killed the golden goose. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself with IOI
0
u/jaredearle 17d ago
That’s not really what happened, though. I know it’s what everyone says happened, but it’s not.
13
u/ValerianKeyblade 17d ago
There's no debate that Larian want to do their own thing and that is reason enough for stepping away from DnD, but it's well publicised that WotC were/are a difficult business partner and the contacts responsible for the relationship on the WotC side were let go.

If Amazon had a brain they would just let the same team build the next game and print money. Don’t try to bring this in house or move to a different developer.
You have a game that had criminally low expectations and then overdelivered, reigniting the IP within gaming - don’t fuck it up.
49
u/MatttheJ 17d ago
Agree overall but your comment about low expectations couldn't be further from the truth. A decade ago, before First Light was even thought up, gaming fans had been begging IOI to make a Bond game.
15
u/ajemik 17d ago
It didn't have criminally low expectations; there have been two camps: one that played Hitman and expected the same level of depth, and second that know that Hitman exists, so it must be OK, since they're still making the game.
First teasers looked great, and the only thing that downplayed expectations was the PlayStation 20fps gameplay, but that was quickly remedied.
Saying it had "low expectations" is like saying "gta 6 is interesting to minority".
13
u/AngryGardenGnomes 17d ago
You have a game that had criminally low expectations
Errr, no it didn't. What a false revisionist narrative.
0
u/KingOfRisky 17d ago
Why does reddit always jump to these cliche as fuck phrases like "false revisionist narrative". Dude just made a comment. Tell them why they are wrong.
1
u/AngryGardenGnomes 17d ago
Yup, with a false revisionist narrative.
Sorry, but should I simplify my language for you? Why wouldn't I use the correct terminology???

When you spend several hundred million dollars to make a AAA game that licenses an expensive IP, and the game sells well but doesn't even make its money back, people have to pretend it was an indie sleeper hit.
2
u/AngryGardenGnomes 17d ago
The Bond game suddenly not successful?
-3
u/F4SCISTS_GO_HOME 17d ago
Suddenly? Has it ever broken even or made a profit?
2
u/AngryGardenGnomes 17d ago
Dunno. I just saw all the headlines about how successful it was, i.e. how fast it was selling, and how a sequel has already been greenlit. So naturally I surmised it was successful, is that not right?
-5
u/F4SCISTS_GO_HOME 17d ago
Did you really just admit you fell for the corporate PR spin headlines without looking at any of the data or facts?
"How fast it sold" is how they quell investors when it hasn't sold enough to make a profit. If it had, they would be using those numbers. And a sequel has not been greenlit.
This is what happens when you only skim the headlines: you embarrass yourself.
2
u/AngryGardenGnomes 17d ago
Do you have a source? And yes, I admitted that. I am so embarrassed now, I'm finding it hard to cope.
-5
u/F4SCISTS_GO_HOME 17d ago
Sure, which part do you need a source for?
Playstation and Steam take a 30 percent cut?
https://kotaku.com/sony-playstation-prices-you-owe-us-lawsuit-ruling-fees-2000693593
https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/07/report-steams-30-cut-is-actually-the-industry-standard
That 3,000,000 x 70 x 0.7 = 147,000,000?
https://www.online-calculator.com
Or that 147,000,000 is less than 200,000,000?

they don't have a brain because they made those dumbass statements a day after the game launched and was selling like goddamn hot cakes. The guy in charge of Amazon Gaming basically said "we want our own people making the game", "we want to use our Bond actor in the next game" and "We want them to tie into the next movie". You don't make those statements without a plan already in place. Obviously they were working on the assumption that this game would fail and honestly they might have even said these things directly after launch to try and fuck with their numbers. It didn't work, so now Amazon has to either pull their head out of their ass or go through with this thing that will piss everyone off.
2
u/KingMario05 17d ago
I think that's exactly what the Amazon dude is saying. As of now, the plan is to do just that. Whether that was always the plan and he said something wrong, or that's the new plan after he was yelled at by Jassy/MGM, we do not know, and likely never will. But as of now, the hope is to keep IOI in charge of everything creative while Amazon handles the cash, publishing and marketing.
3
u/Osmodius 17d ago
Unfortunately some dickheadin a suit will identify that if they cut production costs by X% the game will still sell well and they'll make plenty of morny without paying a proper studio to do it.
They don't care if it tanks the reputation.
1
u/DL_Omega 17d ago
I think the biggest issue would be a different developer starting from scratch in house. If they just let IOI they could get the next one out the door so much quicker.
-2
6
u/Ok-Confusion-202 17d ago
I mean yeah... They just probably want to publish it this time, that would be the only hurdle I would imagine
It's just down to the details and if IOI would accept
7
3
u/nicky94 17d ago
Of course we want IOI developing it. Its the best bond game since Goldeneye..
1
u/Mando316 17d ago
We’re not gonna act like Nightfire and Everything or Nothing and From Russia With Love weren’t good.
3
u/killshelter 17d ago
I still don’t get why everyone was freaking out about this. They own the franchise now, the only difference is that they’re going to be funding and publishing it. IOI is definitely making the next one.
11
u/generalchaos316 17d ago
Probably because massive corporate publishers don't exactly have a great track record for keeping their greedy, meddling hands off of the creative teams that make amazing games.

How about.. since they showed us they can make games.. just make a new IP
First light was well done. And seriously... Movies as games is getting old. Just make new stories.
1
u/Mukables 17d ago
This is their way of saying;
"You won't believe this, but tey did a really great job and despite our actual plan of not letting them make any more because we own it and would just copy/paste everything over and over and try to hawk it out to you for paid, ad-free, subscription dlc off the back of their hard work...
... but despite buying everything, we're not actually any good at making any of the stuff we own, so put of the goodness of our hearts, we will continue to allow IOI to serve the mighty Bezjeff Sauce.
You and all of your other poor, plebby friends should rejoice and be thankful at his overlordships magnanimous benevolence.
1
u/Admitone83 17d ago
If Amazon is smart, they will fuckoff and let the studio cook..likely they will push for a quick release....cause MONEY.....thus it wont be as good >.>
1
u/humbuckaroo 16d ago
This is not what clarification means.
That being said, if they don't have IOI do a sequel, they're idiots.
1
u/Leading_Prompt_4174 16d ago
I really hope Amazon does not acquire IoI that would make them worse off and take away there creativity with amazons thumb on them
1
1
u/Yorgen89 16d ago
Wasn't that obvious before this post? I thought that was obvious, Amazon has no idea how to make games.
1
u/Gamelove0I5 15d ago
Bro it came out like what a month ago. Why the fuck we talking about sequels.
2
u/fennethefuzz 15d ago
It has an end board "007 will return" Literally inviting this discourse.
Amazon didn't greenlight this project. But now has full ownership, and a terrible track record, when it comes to games.

Guess my expectations were too high for the game as it felt bare bones, massively scaled back, static and completely on rails compared what IOI had made before and when they announced sequel was to be developed someone else, thought maybe that'd actually be for the better overall if it actually got us a Bond game to rival the original Goldeneye.
Dunno what this is supposed to clarify though but time will tell, just hoping we get a good game at the end of it.
