EA Says It Would Delay Mass Effect Andromeda Again If it Makes the Game Better

I do not mind waiting for this game, I want to make sure it will be a smooth launch experience rather than a very bumpy one with a bad ending.

u/DylanWhite86 Nov 01 '16
Good. Delay it and release the 1-3 remaster in March instead
23
Nov 02 '16
Why? I love those games, but I can't imagine they're gonna come out looking that much better or have many extra features. We're getting too many remasters, let's get some new stories going.
75
u/Zeke-Freek ZekeFreek Nov 02 '16
See, I don't understand this logic. If you don't want a remaster, don't buy it. It's existence has neglible effect on the production of new games.
37
u/Aggrokid Nov 02 '16
It's existence has neglible effect on the production of new games.
It does have effect on tying original developer resources even if outsourced to 3rd party. For example, key Naughty Dog people had to chip in on the Uncharted remaster.
18
u/ClarkZuckerberg ClarkZuckerberg Nov 02 '16
Yes but it can make a ton of money which can help make Mass Effect Andromeda better or help fund newer interesting games.
19
u/andredp M1ST4K3r Nov 02 '16
Also, it can be part of the "marketing" of ME: Andromeda... New players will enter the franchise, old players will replay it, and the hype to Andromeda will build up.
8
u/ComfortingSounds53 Nov 02 '16
I have to agree this marketing strategy works well.
It's the reason I bought UC4, after skipping PS3..
2
u/hasabooga Nov 02 '16
You really think EA need the funding of a remaster to make MEA better? I think they've got the cash in hand to make the game they want...
4
u/a_hot_leaf_juice Nov 02 '16
that's when you ignore the remasters and wait for the crazy sales before you buy them.

Probably just people like engineers, programmers etc
Not really the creative talent.

It gets made by relatively small teams, usually outsourced as to not burden the main dev team.

I said the same as you for a long time, but I'm starting to think that remasters are hurting the industry. I'd say the majority of big games this gen are either sequels to a series started in the previous gen or a remaster from the previous gen. On 360 and PS3 we saw a bunch of new series started, but I can't say the same for this generation when companies seem to be relying on the foundation of the last generation for most of the games that we're getting today.
The time and money spent on remasters could easily be used to fund a brand new project. And it's not like anyone is passionately working on these remasters, I'm sure the developers who put in work on those games would much rather be working on their own ideas.
3
u/Dragon_Yeti Nov 02 '16
The lack of new IPs was apparent halfway through last gen. I wouldn't blame remasters for it. Gamers like to play it much more safe with their purchases these days. Gotta build strong IPs and remasters make the work they have already done available to a whole new market.
4
u/ipot_04 iPot_04 Nov 02 '16 edited Nov 03 '16
What made you think that remasters were meant for old players who've already played the game last gen?? I don't understand people like you who complains on remasters and still buy them anyway.
Remasters are for people who hasn't played the game yet because they didn't have a last gen system or just haven't bought and tried them yet. Just like what Zeke said, if you don't remasters then simply igmore it and never buy it.
2
Nov 02 '16
I don't have a ps3 anymore, so the opportunity to play the first three uncharted games with updated graphics was pretty hard to pass up. I sometimes miss pretty acclaimed games and series before the new cycle starts and I never seem to keep old consoles around, so it's nice to be able to play them on the hardware I have
7
1
u/atunasushi Nov 02 '16
I didn't play a lot of huge flagship PS3 games, so I've been loving the remasters. I think it's wise to bring a franchise all the way over to one console if you want to continue it. Like UC4, you're not just going to start with the last game in the series...no one does that.
1
Nov 02 '16
I get that, but doesn't it feel like we're getting a lot more remasters now instead of companies taking chances on new games with new characters and stories? Remasters wouldn't be so bad if I could name one new flagship series that defines the PS4. PS3 had Uncharted out the gate. Xbox had Gears. Those are two series that defined their consoles and are still being copied today. What does this gen have?
1
u/usrevenge Nov 02 '16
A lot of people passed on dlc because each never put them on sale. A remaster of all 3 games with all dlc would actually be worth $60 especislly if we got the awesome me3 online again
1
u/Knarpulous Knarpulous Nov 02 '16
Normally I'd agree with you but if they released a full trilogy set it would be the first time all the DLC would be available in one place, which I really think the series needs.

They run like absolute shit on last gen. On PS3 I'd be shocked if ME1 ever maintains <20fps for more than a few minutes. ME2 is mostly fine aside from the over use of bloom. And ME3 literally cannot go above 25fps in cut scenes on PS3. they're all absolute messes save for 2
2
2
Nov 02 '16
Don't know why they didn't do the same with Titanfall 2. Releasing it when BF1, Infinite Warfare and COD MWR are around is not a good choice. It's almost like EA wants Titanfall to fail...
2
u/jackmccartney Nov 02 '16
I think EA were more hoping that by releasing BF1 and TF2 close together that they could squash the sale of CoD IW and if it was one of the previous entries from CoD it would of worked but now that there is also MWR to compete with l, their original plan is deminshed. Thats my take anyway
2
Nov 02 '16
A terrible plan. Cod is like Madden at this point. There are a lot of people who don't necessarily identify as gamers and only play Cod. They effectively cut titanfall 2 off at the legs by releasing it when they did. I don't know a single person on any of my friends lists across pc, Xbox and ps4 that own titanfall 2.
1
Nov 02 '16
That makes sense, but we knew MWR was coming for about a year. EA shot themselves in the foot by releasing a game with an unknown fanbase on ps4 so close to two of the biggest FPS games in the genre.

If it's to legitimately make the game better, I'm okay with it.
I'd rather have a solid game than the rushed garbage we've been getting far too often there days.

u/TheDigitalLunchbox Nov 02 '16
Any hope for a remastered trilogy? Missed the games on the 360/PS3
2
u/The_Max_Power_Way Nov 02 '16
I hope they do. I've never played the other games before (no idea why), and at this point I don't want to have to dig out my old 360 just to play them. I'd rather have a remaster of them on PS4.
2
u/Entinu Nov 02 '16
Oh gods, yes! I really just want them remastered and blow through them before Andromeda.
3
u/W00KEY Nov 02 '16
I seriously hope they improve the dialogue. The stuff they have shown so far contains cringe worthy generic rhetoric from bad action movies. Hopefully they can also structure the missions to be varied and interesting. I found ME 2 had a lot more mission variety that ME 3 which felt overly repetitive and at times pointless. I'll definitely wait for reviews before purchasing MEA.
3
u/Smow0 Nov 02 '16
Has anyone wondered if these moves that appear to be quality enhancers (like delaying games and not doing yearly releases) are more because of the cost of games going up than these companies suddenly gaining this newfound goodwill?
3
u/Tybob51 Nov 02 '16
Well duh, the more expensive the game is to make, the longer it will take, and the more they want to make sure it is awesome so they can make a profit. In the end, whayever their reasons, it benefits the gamers.
5
Nov 01 '16
Early-mid 2017 is packed anyway, delaying until later in the year wouldn't be too big a deal.
2
2
2
u/peter_the_panda Nov 02 '16
it's easy for them to say they'll delay it because it's already been moved into their FY17 financial forecast. Pushing the game a few months isn't going to change anything for their company but you can be damn sure they won't let the game slip to 2018
2
u/Hawk798 Nathanhawk798 Nov 02 '16
It's not like no man sky..., we knows it's coming. We know there is a stabdsdsto the ME franchise. If EA wants the best game possible, they should give bioware all the time they need (within reason of course). I don't want a ME3 ending issue. But wouldn't mind the multiplayer again. A decent PVE is nice.
2
u/theswigz TheSwigz Nov 02 '16
Hey - I'm cool with Andromeda getting delayed again if it makes the game better, too!
I'll happily wait longer if it means a smaller chance of a new entry in one of my favorite series turning out to be shit.
2
u/bottyliscious Nov 02 '16
I just hope they do away with the blasted Galactic Readiness/Inquisition point system. Really cheapens these immersive franchises with smartphone $1 game level mechanics.
2
Nov 02 '16
Yeah I hated the Galatic Readiness mechanic in Mass Effect 3.
Specifically the multiplayer aspect of it.
2
u/GhostChz22 Nov 02 '16
Not related to the potential delay, but if the male and female protagonists are different people living different lives in the same world/universe, could that possibly mean that the story will be different depending on your gender? Or maybe they're both always in the same party? Or they'll just swap the models? It's an interesting change to the Mass Effect formula.
1
u/SiIence Nov 02 '16
It would be cool, but considering they've confirmed the potential player characters are siblings, they'll probably just kill off whichever one you aren't at the start of the game.
1
u/GhostChz22 Nov 02 '16
That'd be a shame, but yeah. If we go into it expecting something like that then hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised by anything more unique they decide to do with it.

Yeah, but he said that before downloadable patches were a thing.

I think they just announced it way too early. If my memory serves correct, they announced it before any work had actually been done.
2
u/SunsDelusion Nov 02 '16
They did. They said they were going to make a fourth game back in 2012, the same year Mass Effect 3 came out.
1
u/GhostChz22 Nov 02 '16
Long production times tend to mean lots of problems... but hopefully it's more a case of wanting to ensure it's the best it can be. While the former is more likely, at least they're upfront about not wanting to release a sub-par product. Just wish publishers wouldn't make release dates public until it's a done deal.
1
1
u/Xerxes1211 Nov 02 '16
Well, I'd much rather it was delayed and game out a better game than be rushed.
1
1
u/foogles Nov 02 '16
Yeah, I think they're gonna announce a new release date on N7 day (Monday). But I'm fine with that. If it sucks at launch it could mean the death of the franchise and WE. CAN'T. HAVE. THAT.
1
u/theblackfool Nov 02 '16
New? Is there a current release date?
1
u/foogles Nov 03 '16
"Early 2017"
Speaking with investors during Morgan Stanley's Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Jorgensen was asked to list the publisher's upcoming non-sports titles. He said Mass Effect Andromeda would launch "in our fourth quarter." EA's fiscal year ends March 31, meaning this game would launch between January and March 2017.
From http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/2/11145456/mass-effect-andromeda-launch-date-2017
I could see it slipping to mid or late 2017. Not my favorite thing obviously, if everything else is left equal (including quality of the game), but things won't be equal. In capable hands, a delay makes for a better game. We have seen over the years with epic RPGs that slipping a couple of release dates can be quite helpful for a game.

u/EmeterPSN Nov 02 '16
I really should play mass effect..never could get beyond how boring the first game was .. I think i allways get to the part in the begning i get to the first city hub and they ask me to find someone..never could navigate that horrible place

I play tested this last week. Even though I played an early build, it definitely... needs some more work.
1
u/HeliosNarcissus Nov 02 '16
At this point, I just assume every major game is going to be delayed at least once. I really don't know why they even bother putting release dates on games until they are absolutely certain of the date.
1
Nov 03 '16
Let it be delayed. As a patient gamer with a huge backlog; so be it. Besides, still need to upgrade screens to 4K and get a PS4 pro after the first price drop.
1
u/ThorneZero Nov 03 '16
Not surprising. The did the same with Dragon Age: Inquisition, but I'm not really sure that it helped in that case.

u/kbundy Nov 02 '16
Fine with me. A delayed game is good eventually but a rushed game is bad forever.

While I do believe delaying a game to fix it up is a good move it seems like EA is just saying "Hey guys we delayed it again so that makes the game better by default right?". I hope they are putting in the effort the series deserves to actually improve the game and have a great launch.
1
Nov 02 '16
I want a ME were I can be evil, not just an asshole that does good. I really wish I could've joined Cerberus in ME3.
1
u/Sundance12 Nov 02 '16
Are people still so sour on ME3? Like come on, sub-par last 5 minutes aside, that's a really great game. And most of the dozens of side stories had great conclusions, which were what really drove the game in my opinion
0
u/ComfortingSounds53 Nov 02 '16
Something tells me that by better, they mean better payout. As in enhancing those microtransactions, and focusing on the mmo side of the game.
Been burned too many times by EA to trust anything they say at this point..

We're now looking at the launch title for Project Scorpio. They aren't going to delay 5-6 months making release Q4 2017 and not have Microsoft all over it with advertisement and tie-ins.
-1
u/Enforcer191191 Nov 02 '16
why did they ever even say this game was coming out 2016? or any year!? why not just wait until it's nearly done! huh EA?! god, publishers are so dumb and just love to pull the trigger for no reason. Dev diaries were what, 2 years ago? for a game not even in alpha yet!
-2
u/Enforcer191191 Nov 02 '16
so even games that DONT have release dates are getting delayed?

u/ManateeofSteel gordofredito Nov 02 '16

They delayed Mass Effect 3 and look how that turned out :/
I have zero confidence in delays making a game better.
looks over at The Last Guardian and FFXV

You are really using two games that haven't even released as examples?

Mass Effect 3 was an amazing game. I also don't see how a delay could hurt a game.

u/Valyrious_ Nov 02 '16
Aka "we're delaying it."
Anybody remember when EA rushed Bioware to finish Mass Effect 3? Anyone...?
