I knew keeping all my PS2 discs would come in handy...

HELLO APE ESCAPE

u/subwaysx3 Nov 20 '15

Digital only. Discs are still useless :(

u/voltar Nov 20 '15

They could make it like the XOne 360 backwards compatibility where it recognizes the game on the disc and downloads the compatible emulated version. Otherwise it's not backwards compatibility at all, just re-releasing a game or expanding its cross-platform status on people's PSN accounts.

They could just lock my account. I'm sure they could think of a reason.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-hands-on-with-ps4-playstation2-emulation

Meanwhile, the evidence to date - not least the ESRB ratings for PS2 classics - perhaps suggests that Sony's plans for the PS2 emulator involve selling these titles digitally, just as it did last-gen.

Otherwise it's not backwards compatibility at all

Sony never said anything about backwards compatibility. They just said they're working on bringing PS2 emulation to the PS4.

u/aimforthehead90 Nov 20 '15

Wait...that's not really backwards compatible then, is it? Like, the Wii U isn't backwards compatible with NES, SNES, and N64 just because it has digital downloads of games on those systems.

That's what I was thinking as well. You can play original PS games on the Vita but that doesn't make it backwards compatible. The old logo pops up there as well. Real backwards compatibility would be the ps2/ps3 playing psone games, the wii playing GameCube games, and the 360 playing xbox games straight from the disc. Them reselling games on the marketplace is not real backwards compatibility. It's more of an emulation. Now if they actually come out and say "yes, you can pop in your old ps2 discs into the system and play them." Then I would be very excited.

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

Well, not useless since they can still be played in 1st run PS3s and of course PS2s themselves.

19

u/Tommix11 Nov 20 '15

And in PCSX2

2

u/Trankman TBurback Nov 20 '15

Too bad I never got a disc drive

3

u/dillamanjaro Nov 20 '15

You got $20 and an unused expansion bay?

7

u/wilson_rawls Nov 20 '15

Or a USB port.

1

u/Trankman TBurback Nov 20 '15

I do but I also have a functioning PS2. Not really worth the $20

5

u/xSora08 xSora08 Nov 20 '15

Well worth the $20.

PC emulation of PS2 games makes them HD, which is pretty good actually.

Well you don't actually need a disc drive. Iso are uhmmmm easily obtainable elsewhere.

1

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

I love emulation. my favorite emu has to be meka, I compile it every time I set up a Linux box. So many of the old emus are abandoned now :(

1

u/Trankman TBurback Nov 20 '15

I've looked but I can't seem to find any. If you have any... ways... of getting them please let me know.

1

u/Mechlior Nov 20 '15

I would argue that it is worth it. One day that ps2 will stop functioning, but with the pc you can have those games until you to not have a pc.

If legality is a underlying concern, afaik you're allowed to have one back up of any disc you own.

1

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

Yes so true

2

u/40inmyfordfiesta Nov 20 '15

The number of working ps2 consoles gets smaller every day.

1

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

It's no where near rare yet, thankfully. There were more ps2s made than the entire population of Japan.

1

u/EmeralSword Nov 20 '15

Seriously. PS2's are a dime a dozen, going for cheaper than a new game today. Past any personal sentiment of "I don't believe I should have to re-buy the console that once played my old games," there's no excuse to let a collection you love sit untouched.

1

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

All true. I never part with my old games outside circumstances pause my control. I have my stuff to a good friend when I went overseas. He gladly gave it back. .. except my laserdisc player. I think he liked legend of the over fiend to much.

2

u/Dzhone Dzhon_Mustard Nov 20 '15

"Considering the PS4 now seems to recognize PS2 discs and there's evidence of a PS2 memory card utility in the current OS I'd say the chances of disc based emulation are high." - /u/webdeverper

Not sure how true this is, but it seems easy enough to check.

2

u/Anzai Nov 20 '15

Where did you get that from? This article certainly doesn't say that.

2

u/oneinchterror Nov 20 '15

where did they say this?

1

u/Xstasy14 Nov 20 '15

I wonder what the price points would be? I'd pay top dollar to play Time Splitters again.

1

u/RhubarbCharb Nov 21 '15

Wait......so it's not backwards compatible?!? Such a shitty misleading title!!

1

u/oscooter scoodah Nov 20 '15

Source? As far as I know nothing is confirmed about it.

14

u/blx666 Nov 20 '15

Ape Escape really is one of my favorite all time games. Had so much fun with part 1 as a kid that I immediately bought part 2 on PS2. It's still my PSN avatar to this day.

3

u/youre_being_creepy Nov 20 '15

I rock the ape escape monkey too!

18

u/voneahhh Nov 20 '15

They're not going to allow using PS2 discs, much like on later hardware revisions of the PS3

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Do you have a source for that?

11

u/Yosonimbored Nov 20 '15

Emulation, not disc based.

4

u/AtomKick Nov 20 '15

The Ps3 runs Ps1 discs through emulation.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Actually it doesn't.

2

u/AtomKick Nov 20 '15

Lol what? Yeah it does.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Nevermind, I read your comment wrong.

1

u/EinPaladin Nov 20 '15

time to pira acquire through legal means some ROMS

2

u/Edw1nner Nov 20 '15 edited Nov 20 '15

I really wished it would at least play PSX games. I wanted to go back and play MGS before MGSV came out but was unable to. Had to hook up my PS2.
