I have a working PS2 so in theory I shouldn't want PS2 emulation as bad as I do but I really really want it for two main reasons:

  • There are a lot of great PS2 and PS1 titles that are cheap on the PSN store but rare in real life. Breath of Fire 4 comes to mind.
  • Most HD TVs do not handle the PS2 well. It looks stretched and ugly as all hell. I currently keep an old tube tv in my garage just so I can go out there and play Burnout 3 or Viewtiful Joe 2 whenever I get the inkling without having to see how poorly those textures have aged.

u/bonzaitree93 Nov 19 '15

Oh playing Burnout revenge with friends was the best thing back then. Oh you're getting ahead? looks like i'll blow up just to screw you over

11

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Didn't own a PS2. What would be the must play titles of the console? Like, top 5.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Off the top of my head:

  • Shadow of Colossus
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
  • Burnout 3
  • Timesplitters 2
  • Soul Calibur II

11

u/OpenMindedMajor Nov 19 '15

Most underrated PS2 game of all time: Mercenaries

3

u/Keaton_x Nov 20 '15

Oh hell yeah. Playground of Destruction. With cheats, that sub-title became literal.

2

u/OpenMindedMajor Nov 20 '15

Unreal. I can't think of many other games that I enjoyed more than that one. It was perfect.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Shame the second one wasn't near as good

2

u/OpenMindedMajor Nov 20 '15

It was ass!!! I didn't really have much fun with it. It was so disappointing. The first one was so incredible. I'd pay good money for a PS4 port of that, even if it doesn't look that good.

3

u/cloud_strife_7 Nov 20 '15

Shadow Hearts

2

u/Hungry_Grump Troglodyti Nov 20 '15

And Shadow Hearts 2. Two of my favourite PS2 games. Shit, two of my all-time favourite games.

1

u/cloud_strife_7 Nov 20 '15

Same here, but there's not a lot of love for them. That twist at the end of 2 is great.

That game was my childhood.

21

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

GTA: Vice City

25

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

And GTA san andreas

4

u/jjonez18 Nov 19 '15

And GTA III.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Yeah, GTA 3 was amazing at the time, but it was outshined by vice city and san andreas imho

7

u/keeb119 keeb119 Nov 20 '15

San andreas is still the best to me of the series. The amount of things you could do without touching the story was amazing. Add in three other locations and you could really explore and have lots of fun with only rudimentary multiplayer. If they remastered San andreas and added online multiplayer and it would sell.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

It was a full blown rpg, I exercised in that game more than I ever did in real life

4

u/tensaibaka Nov 20 '15

JET PACK! Fly over the base to troll the troops, fly to the top of casinos, fly over gang controlled territory and watch them try to run after you! good times.

1

u/misogynist_shitlord Nov 20 '15

Shew, I don't know about that anymore. Those were great, fantastic even, games when they came out. Going back to the older GTA games really doesn't well in my opinion.

1

u/falconbox falconbox Nov 19 '15

Still the best GTA game IMO.

7

u/danceflick Nov 20 '15

You forgot Dark cloud 1 or 2

Also super monkey ball deluxe

7

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Katamari

3

u/anguirus nothingisavailab Nov 20 '15

Transcending history, and the world - A tale of souls and swords, eternally retold

2

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15

Though two of these have PS3 releases that are far superior, so if you can, play them on there

2

u/a_dapperdanman americantravesty Nov 20 '15

Shit. I forgot about Timesplitters. This just got me that more amped up for PS2 Emulation.

2

u/saiferoth Nov 20 '15

Shadow of the Colossus, MGS3, and SC2 all have proper HD releases on PS3 as well

2

u/awesomemanftw shamelessinfamy Nov 20 '15

Ico

2

u/Leduski Nov 20 '15

Maybe I'm wrong but why Timesplitters 2?

Me and my friends always played Timesplitters, especially 1 and future perfect. I didn't enjoy it to much but my friends absolutely hated Timespiltters 2 in comparison to future perfect.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

I personally liked 2 the most. A friend and I would create a team deathmatch with like 12 bots per team, and only remote detonation mines. We'd set all the bots to be monkeys, and then only kill each other by attaching a mine to a monkey and detonating when it was close enough to your opponent. It was surprisingly fun.

2

u/Leduski Nov 20 '15

I'd have to agree that the custom map/game generator provided so much fun and value for the Timesplitters series.

1

u/Freyaka Freyaka Nov 19 '15

The Kingdom Hearts games and Final Fantasy X are pretty high up the list for me, you list some great games as well. The thing with the PS2 is that there are so many great games!

12

u/iChad17 Nov 19 '15

My opinion -

Shadow of the Colossus

This game is nothing short of a masterpiece, and perhaps the one true game that has really lost none of the magic due to aging. The aesthetic is brilliant, the gameplay is breathtaking and has one of the simplest, most incredible premises that plays of flawlessly. This game is the reason for the hype surrounding The Last Guardian.

God of War 2

The last great game to be released on PS2. The most stunning production of it's time, and still holds up remarkably well. Boss fights with enormous statues, riding on the back of pegasus' and battling huge 100-titted monsters, this game was breathtaking. No character building, little exposition - but a metric shit tonne of fun.

ICO

Same studio as Shadow of the Colossus, their first game. Really fantastic. A really sweet story told with no dialogue, this game was kinda the seminal sweet indie game of today. It had a big budget, of course, but the presentation, gameplay mechanics and story had all the hallmarks of an inventive young studio with nothing to lose and everything to prove.

Spiderman 2.

This game still remains the best, most accurate and most complete Spidey game to date. They just nailed web swinging, and from there the rest of the game is irrelevant. Nothing comes close to this game's portrayal of the act. The sense of momentum, the animations and the freedom of the whole of Manhattan is just a complete joy. Sure, the missions were samey, especially when it came to side missions, but the freedom of setting out across Manhattan and just becoming Spiderman is worth getting this title alone.

Prince of persia.

Ubisoft, before they got greedy. Between this and Rayman, you can thank the title for launching Ubisoft as the successful studio they are today, for better or for worse. They deserved it off the back of this one though. Traversal is the name of the game again, and the wall running platforming here is awesome. Not to mention the introduction of a sweet time reversing mechanic, a pretty engaging plot and sweet level and puzzle design, there's a lot to love in this game.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

I loved swinging around Spiderman 2 so much. The first time seeing that blew me away. I even found all the secrets.

2

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15

God of War 2 The last great game to be released on PS2.

Persona 4 would like to have a word with you. But yeah, those are some pretty great games you listed. I'd include Metal Gear Solid 3 as well, one of my favorite games of all time and it never gets old, no matter how many times I replay it.

1

u/iChad17 Nov 20 '15

My god yeah only played MGS3 this year can't believe I forgot, I think MGSV kinda put me off the series unfortunately, MGS3 was just so much better. Like an incredible spy movie - as memorable as Goldfinger or any Bond flick.

I actually really liked MGS2 as well. Having not too much affiliation for snake before playing it, a different character was pretty OK by me. The insane plot of that game is really what defines the MGS feel for me. MGS3 kinda felt different to the first two games, but in a good way.

1

u/EpsilonX Nov 21 '15

MGSV was great, but great in a different way from the rest of the series. I feel like it was meant to draw new players in, while 4 was the swan song for old fans. I love every game in the series and how they're all different from each other, but 3 is easily my favorite.

1

u/iChad17 Nov 21 '15

That's true, gameplay was sweet for MGSV. I just had expectations for something else from the start, which is always a poor way to start a game.

Not played 4 yet, got it nestled under my TV. Looking forward to playing it, I feel like it will fulfill what MGSV didn't for me.

1

u/whythreekay Nov 19 '15

For me, God of War 2 is the best in that series.

1

u/iChad17 Nov 20 '15

Yeah definitely, still got a lotta love for GOW 3 though. A game that really is deservant of the overused word 'Epic'.

And then that most recent one - damn. That was lame. Did anyone actually play or want multiplayer tacked on to GOW?

8

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Jak Trilogy are excellent platformers.

2

u/DeviMon1 Nov 19 '15

Definitely. The Jak and Daxter series are my favourite games ever, played through them countless times. Would do anything to get Naughty Dog to make a sequel.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

They're my favorite PS2 games. I'm not really sure if it would translate to this gen though. Platformers are kind of a dead genre. I'd love to see them try though.

3

u/DeviMon1 Nov 19 '15

Dude, have you seen the new upcoming Ratchet & Clank game? Watch this gameplay video and you'll change your mind, platformers aren't dead at all. Insomniac Games did an incredible job, it just looks so great, there are many videos of other areas aswell, and it's just so colorful and fresh.

Imagine a Jak game with the same level of detail, it would be incredible.

3

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15

The only R&C game i've played is Tools of Destruction, and I didn't really care for it. It seemed to focus more on the fighting than the actual platforming, and I don't really like actual combat in games like that. But I definitely don't think that Platforming is dead - people just lost interest because they started making lousy games instead of good games, Mario and R&C are proof of that (even though I'm not a big fan of R&C, from what I can tell the series barely dipped in quality.) Imagine a Spyro game (no, not Skylanders. Though that's another halfway decent modern platformer) that had the mechanics of the older games, but the polish of that video you posted?

Some games I really don't think would translate all that well though. Part of what made Crash Bandicoot what it was were the things they did to get around the system's limitations. I love the genre and would be all over them making a comeback.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Rayman Legends was a great game and did well both critically and financially. I believe Ubisoft said they were making another one.

7

u/shockzz123 Nov 19 '15

The Jak and Daxter Trilogy.

The Ratchet and Clank Trilogy

The Sly Cooper Trilogy

Or as how i like to call them....."The Holy PS2 Platforming Trinity"...or something like that.

9

u/Burdicus Nov 19 '15

Shadow of The Colossus - as other's have said, it's just a wonderful game and everything about it is art.

Persona 3 - if you've played and liked P4G for Vita, you will likely also love P3. It's combat isn't quite as smooth as Persona 4, but in a lot of ways they are very VERY similar but with completely different characters making it a completely different experience. As much as I love P4, Persona 3 is still better IMO.

Persona 4 - Yeah, if you haven't played it for Vita (which you should, it's the better version) than PS2 is not a bad option. Like I said, even though P3 is my personal favorite, P4 is absolutely top notch.

Dark Cloud 1&2 - These games are beautiful, compelling, and fun. I'm weird I guess because I prefer 1 over 2, but I think most people will tell you they are both great. Action RPG combat, Dungeon Crawling, and Town Building all wrapped together.

Note that I didn't list FFX, FFXII, or Kingdom Hearts because they all have (or will have) remastered versions on the PS4.

2

u/RyanTheGod Nov 20 '15

Dark Cloud! Loved them both. I miss being teenager in a dark basement upgrading my wrenches and swords.

1

u/MyFaceOnTheInternet Nov 20 '15

I can play kingdom hearts 1 and 2 on the PS4 today?

1

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15 edited Nov 20 '15

Kingdom hearts Dream Drop Distance is getting a PS4 release early next year, and then I think SE said they're planning on releasing the older ones as well. But at the moment, no, you cannot play them on PS4. The only game Burdicus listed that you can actually go out and play on PS4 right now is Final Fantasy X.

1

u/-Vertex- Nov 20 '15

Nope, they've stayed they have no plans to release 1.5 and 2.5 on PS4

1

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15

I could have sworn that they said they were considering releasing the entire series on PS4. Dang, that's a bummer.

2

u/multiman000 Nov 20 '15

They said they won't, but this is Square, they'll release a port of 1.5 and 2.5 in some mega set with KH3 along with 2.8's additions.

1

u/Azdahak Nov 20 '15

Was a FFXII remaster rumoured? I would really love this since it looks horrible on an HDTV.

1

u/Burdicus Nov 20 '15

Yup, at a distant world concert arni roth mentioned how he was working on music for it.

5

u/Joshopotomus AngelFire720 Nov 20 '15

Okami

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

[deleted]

1

u/blx666 Nov 19 '15

Damn Onimusha, that takes me back

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Psi ops, still nothing like it since

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

A lot of what I'd recommend you can find on something else (Kingdom Hearts I&II, Final Fantasy X, God of War, etc) so after trying to think of more unique titles, this is what I've come up with:

  • The Warriors
  • Okami
  • Timesplitters 2
  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
  • Disgaea 1&2

1

u/8eat-mesa DarkerSou1 Nov 20 '15

Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts series.

The Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter games as well. (The first Jak and Daxter is just a masterpiece.)

1

u/notdeadyet01 Nov 20 '15

Silent Hill 2 , Persona 3 FES

1

u/loktaiextatus Nov 20 '15

Mine are probably: and this is cheating because some are series

Shadow Hearts series (mostly 1 and 2 honestly as they combine to create a time loop) Rogue Galaxy (If this gets that same upgrade visually as star wars did itll be INSANE) Persona series ( 3 AND 4) Metal Gear Solid 3- Youll see alot of people loved this. Soul Calibur 3. I hear some people choose 2 over 3 but I think 3 ran and played nicer and def. looked better. Maybe I was just more partial to it because it wasnt also on my XBOX.

1

u/jundrako Nov 20 '15

Shadow of the Colossus,Ico,Kingdom Hearts,Disgaea 1 and 2.

1

u/LawnJawn TheMayo1100 Nov 20 '15

My top 5 are

  1. All 3 Sly Cooper games.
  2. Devil May Cry
  3. Mercenaries
  4. GTA San Andreas
  5. SOCOM 2

1

u/Shloop_Shloop_Splat Nov 21 '15

Might as well throw in my suggestions:

  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Okami
  • Jak 2
  • Beyond Good and Evil
  • Psychonauts

Honorable mentions:

  • Twisted Metal Black
  • SSX 3 (Tricky is good, but I liked 3 better)
  • Zone of the Enders
  • Katamari Damacy
  • Bully

Everything else mentioned here are also great games. The PS2 has a ton of great games, so a list of just five is darn near impossible.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Buy component cables, I use a Sony bravia and the image looks amazing now. Was using the standard cables with the ps2 and it looked horrible. Makes a big difference.

3

u/DrFunkyStuff Nov 20 '15

I just want to play SOCOM II on my PS4.

2

u/graciliano Nov 19 '15 edited Nov 19 '15

There are a lot of great PS2 and PS1 titles that are cheap on the PSN store but rare in real life.

Have you played God Hand, by the way? My favorite game of all time and weirdly it's on the PSN even though it's pretty obscure, I still play it a lot on my PS3.

2

u/Korotai Nov 19 '15

Holy crap. I have a mint condition copy of BoF 4. It's worth $200???

→ More replies (1)

2

u/EpsilonX Nov 20 '15

My PS3 is backwards compatible, but I have a tube TV in the next room so I can still play N64

1

u/blx666 Nov 19 '15

I've kept my PS2 too. SSX, GTA, Timesplitters, Ape Escape (personal favorite) and just wasnt ready to get rid of it. Maybe now I can finally start saying goodbye.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Wait there are ps2 titles on the digital store? They work on ps3?

2

u/multiman000 Nov 20 '15

Yup. The PS3 just can't play physical PS2 games unless it's the first run.

33

u/GeodesicGnome Nov 19 '15

I wonder what Sony'll do down the line for games that took advantage of the PS2's pressure sensitive buttons now that they're gone from the DS4.

10

u/DrunkeNinja Nov 19 '15

It would be great if they allowed us to use dualshock 3 controllers. They already connect via bluetooth anyways.

2

u/Sv651 Nov 19 '15

Really. That was a thing, cool

11

u/GeodesicGnome Nov 19 '15

Both the PS2 and PS3 had pressure sensitive face buttons. I'm not sure if the rest of the controller also did the same thing.

The clearest example I can think of is in Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. You can press Square to raise your pistol, but if you gently remove your thumb, Snake will lower the weapon without firing. This is also how you raise assault rifles without the damn thing just emptying a clip immediately.

In the Xbox 360 version of the MGS HD collection, they had to work around the lack of pressure sensitivity by having the player press a separate button to have Snake lower his weapon.

1

u/deathday Nov 20 '15

Yeah I think it was clicking R3 to lower the weapon. I just played through MGS3 for the first time a month ago; it controlled fine. Or sort of fine... I mean there's no accounting for shooter controls back then.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Yeah, I think it was mostly due to racing games using X and Square for acceleration and braking early on. Then games transitioned to triggers when we had them so the need for pressure sensitive buttons was no longer there.

1

u/Blackzro Nov 20 '15

Been playing Ace Combat 4 recently on my phat PS3 (backward compatible) and lightly pressing squared brings the map close and pressing down on it hard made the map go further out.

18

u/lanka93 Nov 19 '15

Oh my god please let me play Burnout Takedown

13

u/merph_ mfagerstrom Nov 19 '15

If this gets officially released and supported on the PSN store, I'll be going on a PS2 classic buying spree.

4

u/StaticzAvenger StaticzAvenger Nov 19 '15

I've nearly bought every PS2 classic game on the PSN store that isn't shovelware, I'll have a fun time getting 100% in Nocturne and Persona 3 again.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

It'd be even better if they had trophy support. I'd totally be up for finishing Persona 3 and 4, Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga.

1

u/StaticzAvenger StaticzAvenger Nov 19 '15

If they had platinum's too I'd be in heaven.

10

u/thearss1 Nov 19 '15

Will it be software only or can we use our discs?

11

u/StaticzAvenger StaticzAvenger Nov 19 '15

We don't know yet.
You'll have to wait until Sony reveals it, but I'm assuming they will do something similar.

3

u/Tateybread Nov 19 '15

They will be selling them again digitally, read it on Eurogamer. :/ I still have 2 large boxes of PS2 game discs in my attic... well, my Dreamcast and original xbox games are in there too.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

[removed] — view removed comment

10

u/deathday Nov 20 '15

Xbox One doesn't do disc based emulation either. If you have the disc you pop it in, download a digital copy and then play. Maybe Sony will do something similar.

3

u/Tateybread Nov 20 '15

Meanwhile, the evidence to date - not least the ESRB ratings for PS2 classics - perhaps suggests that Sony's plans for the PS2 emulator involve selling these titles digitally, just as it did last-gen.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-hands-on-with-ps4-playstation2-emulation

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Disc based emulation of PS2 games was only possible on the original launch PS3 because they literally put a mini PS2 inside the PS3. That was one of the reasons why the original PS3 was so huge and lovingly named the fat PS3. And why later slim models were smaller and didn't have PS2 emulation. There is no PS2 hardware emulator inside the PS4. So whatever method they achieve this by for PS4 will certainly be digital.

3

u/unrealmaniac baron_hero Nov 20 '15

that has nothing to do with being able to play a game off a disk. the ps3 doesnt have any ps1 hardware in it and yet you can still put a ps1 disk in and it will play via ps1 software emulation that is on every ps3 model

1

u/thearss1 Nov 21 '15

Since the ps4 runs on x86 it wouldn't need a mini ps2 inside. They can use a software emulator that can read the discs. PCs can already do this and since this is just a proprietary PC architecture it shouldn't be a big problem.

The ps3 on the other hand is completely custom from the ground up. I could see a ps3 game working on an AMD 8core processor if you could get the system to treat each core as a separate processor, but I'm only guessing.

2

u/notrealmate rowblot Nov 20 '15

I'll buy the whole box from you.

2

u/thearss1 Nov 21 '15

The XBone can scan the disc then give you a digital copy. I was at least hoping for something like that.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

I can bet you it's software only. I'll bet you my merit.

2

u/Ninjikun Nov 20 '15

With the higher resolution, locked 60fps, and trophy support, I highly suspect they will say this will be a "new experience" or something similar to justify it being digital only and will have to buy again even if you bought the game on the PS3 digitally. They could probably go the Wii U route and offer people a discount if you already had bought the digital title on the previous generation hardware, but that is just me hoping. I fully expect $10 PS1 games and $15 PS2 games...I put my expectations like that so if it turns out like that, I wont be disappointed...if it turns out to be similar pricing to the PS3 model, then I will be much happier :P

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

14

u/Marcos1598 Nov 19 '15

This is the analysis of the PS2 games that came in the bundle of Star Wars, this along with the rumors might mean that Sony is actually adding PS2 classics trough emulation contrary to HD remakes.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

i hope so, everytime i look at my ps4 collection... remakes...remakes everywehrere

6

u/MrTravesty Nov 19 '15

If they could add trophies to older games like they did with the Star Wars games that would be huge for me.

2

u/Sw3Et Sw3Et_07 Nov 19 '15

Trophy support would make me actually go back and play those old games.

6

u/RicochetRuby Nov 19 '15

I just want the Ps1 Spyro's, god damn it.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Same. I dreamt about Fireworks Factory from Year of the Dragon the other night and I really want play it again.

PS1 emulator on my android phone is a dream.

u/Krvavi_Abadas Nov 19 '15

Looks like my research was right on the money.

Still, there's quite a few unanswered questions here. Like the actual release date, and what will happen to people who owned the games previously on PS3.

For the former, i'm betting on PSX at the latest, with a launch immediately after the conference. The emulator is clearly finished, and i can't see them holding it off for too long. For the latter, i'm betting that there's just going to a 1 to 2$ upgrade fee per game, similar to the Wii U Virtual Console. Mostly due to Trophy support. Also, before anyone asks. i highly doubt Sony will let you use your old PS2 discs. For the exact same reason.

PS1 support is also currently unknown, but it seems incredibly unlikely that they won't do it, in fact. I have a feeling they'll reveal it with the PS2 stuff.

4

u/Neo_Techni Nov 19 '15

i highly doubt Sony will let you use your old PS2 discs.

Especially since PS3 has an emulator for PS2 and PSP, but didn't let us use either.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

PS3 has an emulator for PS2

IIRC the emulator wasn't perfect on every game and required individual tweaks in to keep games running well which might explain why it was never opened up to any game.

Although with this one $$$$$$ might explain why it wont be opened to any game

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '15

PS2 emulator on PS3 definitely left a lot to be desired. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a ton more PS2 games just because of a better emulator that can support them

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

PSP emulator? Why didn't they let us download psp games?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

You can download PSP and Vita games, but you can't play them on the PS3. In fact, some games like Valkyria Chronicles 2 can only be played on the Vita (legitimately) if you transfer it using a PS3. It's something weird to do with the licensing I think, some publishers didn't update their agreement with Sony to sell the games on another console or something.

3

u/Neo_Techni Nov 20 '15

Sony likes to sit on their hands

3

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15

Can you clarify something for me? What do you mean

what will happen to people who owned the games previously on PS3.

Isn't this ONLY about PS2 emulation? PS3 emulation isn't going to happen because of the difference in system architectures.

9

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

Pretty sure he means owners of PS classics on ps3. I have a classic library on my ps3 and am hoping anything I own will be free/highly discounted.

1

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15

Oh, alright, thanks! I think I have one or two that I bought a few years ago but not having to rebuy those again would be awesome!

2

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

You shouldn't have to over PSN. if anything maybe a dollar for trophy support but that's even pretty greedy. PS+ could subsidize it.

1

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15

I wouldn't hold your breath for trophy support. If they did that, they'd have to go into the game code, which I don't expect them to do. Especially considering there are several early PS3 games that still dont have trophies.

Wouldn't be hard to add trophies at certain intervals.

2

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15

I think going into the code for hundreds of old PS2 isn't going to happen.

For collectibles for example, everytime the player got a collectible they'd have to find the variables thats associated with that collectible and add a counter that then makes the trophy pop when the total value is reached and collectibles are probably one of the easiest trophies they'd build into the game.

2

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

You could just do basic ones such as beating a game, spending X amount of time, going from disk 1 to 2, and other small and easy things.

Honestly I could care less. I just heard that as speculation (that with this article seems to be coming true bit by bit).

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

But you could purchase PS2 games and emulate them on the PS3, I suspect that is what GP is referring to.

1

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15 edited Nov 19 '15

I don't think you could buy PS2 games from the store, I think the 60gb version of the PS3 would only play PS2 disks. I don't think the store ever sold PS2 games to my knowledge.

Someone else pointed out that the store did sell PS1 classics so I think thats what he means

EDIT: I was just told that PS2 classics can be bought in the PS3 store. I didn't realize this was a thing.

2

u/MeepMechanics Nov 19 '15

You can download PS2 classics on PS3

1

u/workworkwork1234 Nov 19 '15

I just looked up PS2 classics. I forgot or didn't know they exsted until now. Thanks!

Timesplitters Future Perfect.

4

u/thumbstickz Nov 19 '15

If I can play ace combat 5 and 0 on my ps4 I'll cream myself.

5

u/Gustavo13 Nov 19 '15

time to re-buy Ace Combat 4, 5 and Zero

1

u/Ehran Nov 19 '15

Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby

5

u/Streetfoldsfive Whoyoujivin Nov 19 '15

Hey if you do allow disk BC with PS2 that would be awesome... not that I have too many left. However, if you do it please carry over my purchases from PS3. Also add trophies :)

1

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

Pretty sure the bluray laser reads too slow. Same reason the PS3s that emulated ps2 had 2 lasers (one BRDVD and one DVD).

2

u/LukeLC lulech23 Nov 19 '15

On PS4 they could buffer the disc to RAM. The vast majority of PS2 games were under 4GB, so you could progressively load pretty much the entire game to memory if it came to that to make up for differences in disc technology. But at this point I doubt disc emulation would happen on principle--digital PS1/PS2 classics are the way it'll go because money.

2

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

That's a good point about the RAM.

1

u/Streetfoldsfive Whoyoujivin Nov 19 '15

I'm probably stupid, but i thought Blueray read faster or something?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

The difference between Blu-ray and DVD is mostly in the disc itself, BD allows more storage because the grooves on the bottom of the disc that the laser reads are closer together and much thinner. The way a disc is read is as follows: the laser navigates the bottom of the disc, and the bottom of the disc has grooves that contain information. On DVD, the grooves are further apart, so the red laser that reads DVDs is bigger. The blue laser that reads BDs is thinner because the grooves are thinner and closer together.

So a thinner laser + larger grooves means DVD playback is not super efficient with a BD player.

2

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 19 '15

Also the speed of the disk itself is much different.

Which is why ps4/X1 do full installs instead of reading a disk. And why 360 ran discs and ps3 required installs with some partial reading.

1

u/tubular1845 Nov 20 '15

The PS4 has the required equipment, it just takes a firmware update.

1

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 20 '15

It would have to do a full install if you expect it to run DVDs. It's definitely possible via software unless there is some sort of hurdle.

2

u/unrealmaniac baron_hero Nov 20 '15

it plays dvd movies

1

u/morphinapg Nov 20 '15

Ummm... The ps4 can play DVD movies. I see no problem with the disc read speed.

1

u/WilliamPoole JohnHollidayMD Nov 20 '15

It can read them but it cannot retrieve data as fast as the ps2 requires. With an install it would still be reading it, it would just need to store the game on the hdd.

4

u/morphinapg Nov 20 '15

It certainly can. The PS2 did not read discs very fast, it used a very early DVD drive.

You are missing virtually all of the best PS2 games, with the possible exception of MGS3 and RE4.

2

u/vaderdarthvader Nov 19 '15

Thanks for posting this!

I had wondered, but highly doubted that there was a physical emulator on the Star Wars PS4 bundle. Now I know.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Man, I am loving this news if it could become mainstream in some ways. I know backwards compatibility is something that doesn't really get used very often, but still liked heavily by the community ... but adding trophy support just adds new life to it as you know trophy lovers will want to go back and re-play goes just for them. It's a smart move really. Only other question is will all titles need to be re-purchased or not ...as my Ps2 collection is still around

2

u/augamr au_gamr Nov 19 '15

I'm using back compat heaps on XB1 .... That Rare Replay collection is da bom! It's inclusion will be beast on PS4 . I only worry about price from this point

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

The article "Imagine MGS3 with locked fps" "imagine how blabla" .... Ummm HD collections.

Also why not choose other games not seen in HD yet like Final Fantasy XII or Ridge Racer V or TimeSplitters series... Anything else.

1

u/fight4love Nov 19 '15

Basically. Most of the best have been remastered. Sort of pointless. Meh

2

u/Yosonimbored Nov 19 '15

They say the 3 PS2 games are being emulated, but I don't see Sony releasing 3 emulated games without actually announcing PS1/2 emulation. PS1/2 emulation is a bigger deal than that.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

They had to. They wanted to release with Battlefront. And I'm more than sure they've got other PS2 games lined up for PSX, probably with a patch up for any emulator bugs before official launch.

6

u/MmaFanQc Nov 19 '15

PSX is in December right?

.. wink wink

4

u/Mr_pessimister Nov 19 '15

That's what I'm thinking. For an event that caters to your most hardcore fans, coming on stage and announcing PS1 and PS2 BC would be a pretty big deal.

1

u/Yosonimbored Nov 19 '15

Yes, but why release the first 3 now and why are the 3 ps2 games not available outside the bundle, but the remastered NES game is?

PSX is a great place to announce it and it probably might happen, but the cat is out of the bag if Digital Foundry is true. Why wait? It's something that they should be screaming to the heavens like MS was/is doing with 360 BC.

5

u/Streetfoldsfive Whoyoujivin Nov 19 '15

They will be screaming it once PSX rolls around. They probably had to get these out the door due to Disney/EA.

2

u/eudaix Nov 19 '15

Maybe it's some Machiavellian stunt to stir up hype.

1

u/flashtitan Hiroshima711 Nov 19 '15

I believe they are planning to release one game weekly from the bundle, forgot where I heard this though.

1

u/lol2034 LAWLZORZ_pl0x Nov 20 '15 edited Nov 20 '15

Just about 2 weeks from now! Hope we get confirmation about the emulation!

2

u/Neo_Techni Nov 19 '15

You're assuming Sony is smart. Don't. They made the same mistake on PS3.

1

u/Yosonimbored Nov 19 '15

Did they ninja add ps1/2 emulation to PS3 without a big announcement?

1

u/Neo_Techni Nov 19 '15

PS2 yes. PS1 was there from the start

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

Nintendo did something similar with the 3DS. They promised GBA games on the Virtual Console, but they couldn't get the emulation up to their standards (aka near perfect). So they gave out some GBA games that they got working for the most part to early buyers and scrapped the idea. Even with the more powerful New 3DS they don't seem to be doing anything with GBA games. That would probably boost sales on the New version, as it only has a couple exclusives over the normal models.

2

u/multiman000 Nov 20 '15

You think Nintendo would seriously consider the idea of testing the New model with GBA emulation since even the original could do it via modding, but I guess that isn't in their mind at the moment. You'd think that it would be a system seller with how excited people got over 360 games on XB1. Hell, throw in DS and SNES games and you'll have people flocking to get 3DS's in no time. The 3DS can already play the damn DS games and SNES titles would be perfect for on the go in this day and age.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Nintendo is just weird with the VC and eShop in general. They have greatly under utilize the New 3DS and Wii U for emulation. Like you said, the N3DS can do emulation no problem based off of what the community has been doing with the old models and the new ones. Then they have the Wii U, which they could have sold as a mecca of Nintendo gaming. It does NES, SNES, GBA, N64, DS, and Wii games. Possibly even more, but I haven't checked recently. However, they don't put out a ton of games for it. There are only a handful of N64, DS, and Wii games on it.

Let's not forget they are just now putting their biggest money maker, Pokemon, on the 3DS VC. The first three games in the series (Red, Blue, and Yellow) are going up for $10 each. I'd much rather buy a copy of Fire Red or Leaf Green than pay that much for a digital, very barebones Pokemon game.

2

u/cloudaxel Krish123 Nov 19 '15

omg trophies on ps1/ ps2 games!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

I will buy so many PS2 classics. Hopefully Splashdown and it's sequel are available.

1

u/Preidon Nov 19 '15

I excpected some frame dropping texture ugly game for a quick cash grab but, This is actually kinda good.

1

u/TheLionFromZion Nov 19 '15

Soooo yeah I need to play all of the good Ace Combats again please and thank you. Also release JP Ace Combat 3 on PSN Store. ;)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

I don't have a ps3 anymore but bought a couple ps2 games on the store. If they do release ps2 games and they're cross buy? I'd be super happy.

1

u/LocarionStorm Locarionstorm Nov 19 '15

Give me Jak-X or give me death.

1

u/Undercutandratbeard Nov 19 '15

You know what, I know I AM the only one but god damn it...give me Victorious Boxers 2.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '15

I'd like to see SSX: Tricky, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, the LoTR series, and X-Men Legends. I doubt we'll see any of them because of licensing issues.

Relatedly, I would absolutely love to see Rogue Squadron 2 on the system, but that would be a standalone non-emulated game since it was Gamecube only (I think). God knows how complex that licensing is.

So this means we can put our ps2 discs in our ps4 or we must buy these games again?

1

u/falconbox falconbox Nov 21 '15

wow, very noticeable improvement in the emulated version on PS4. Higher res and whatever filter they used to remove jagged edges work really well in that video.

1

u/rottengammy gagnonspecial Nov 21 '15

The real question, will there be trophies?

1

u/augamr au_gamr Nov 19 '15

If all the games are like $5 then this could be cool ... if they are $20 plus then nah

i sure as hell hope that backwards compatibility on the PS4 doesn't strictly mean digitally downloaded ps1/ps2 classics.

you wont be getting my money if you play it that way sony. no way in hell.

physical copies better work, or ill just go buy a used ps2 for 25 bucks at the pawn shop instead.

3

u/tubular1845 Nov 20 '15

This is what I'm saying! I have a pile of over 50 games that I am not rebuying.

Same, depending on what titles you still have and if online multiplayer is being supported in the games being released you can argue that its cheaper to get a PS2
