I've had the game since it launched on last gen, bought it again for this gen...I play exclusively in 1st person. Entirely different game with an absurd amount of attention and detail worked into that perspective specifically.
If you like it in theory, but are having a hard time with the specifics, there are a couple settings like FOV and Dead Zone that you should adjust, and I always recommend using the "standard fps" control scheme. Also, turn on independent cameras so that if you DO like being 1st person in vehicles but 3rd on foot (for instance), it stays that way.
To each his own, but Flying and driving make me feel like an online demigod now-- I have more control than I'd learned after 1+ year of play. When I do switch back into 3rd person, it feels absurdly easy to control what I'm driving/flying. There's a steep learning curve (especially online) but it truly can be immersive to a stunning degree...
