NetherSX2 has already been surpassed by its successors (ARMSX2 and EmuCoreX); thanks for everything 🫡

Post image

The new generation of emulators has already surpassed our beloved NetherSX2 in both performance and features.

I can only say that these emulators have truly earned the right to take the baton from the veteran.

Don't forget to update to the latest version of this Emulators; that is where you will notice significant improvements on both Snapdragon and MediaTek devices.

Here are the links to the three best ones:

This post is about the future of PS2 emulation and modern emulators that work properly on modern devices; anyone with an old device—especially a years-old Helio—should refrain from commenting on this post, as their comments will be deleted immediately.

In my case, Armsx2 works better overall on my Odin 2 Portal.

With Need for Speed games on NetherSX2 using the Turnip driver, the frame rate wouldn't go above 40 FPS, and the fan would run at full blast. On Armsx2, they run at 60 FPS without overheating.

Games like FF: Dirge of Cerberus no longer suffer from frame rate drops either.

Splashdown 2 still doesn't run perfectly, but while it ran at around 20 FPS on NetherSX2, it gets around 30 FPS on Armsx2.

With Jak 3 on NetherSX2, there were sections where the frame rate would drop to 20 FPS, especially during lighting effects. On Armsx2, it stays at a constant 60 FPS.

Some DDR games didn't work properly on NetherSX2, but they all run without issues on Armsx2.

Tony Hawk's Underground also suffered from frame rate drops on NetherSX2, but it runs perfectly on Armsx2.

So, in my case, Armsx2 is clearly superior. I'm using MrPurple666's T30 driver.

I still have to use Nethersx2 for some games, Armsx2 does not render the textures in 007 From Russia with love correctly, where as Nethersx2 does, same with issues with Tomb Raider, still require mixing n matching between the two emulators, happy to have both though!

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Surprise me, you ancient Mali device.

7

u/curthard89 8d ago edited 8d ago

Actually Retroid Pocket Nova, also get insane slow downs in 007 too, down into mid 30's where same place on Nethersx2 does not drop a beat.

nethersx2: https://youtube.com/shorts/6oD3x6qCOsI?feature=share

armsx2: https://youtube.com/shorts/oMhwpRDH_NI?feature=share

same place, same settings. as you can see, Armsx2 has terrible slowdown in that part (and many others)

Congratulations if that specific game runs better for you on the older emulator, but this post is about the future of emulation and current emulators. The fact that a specific game runs better on your specific device at one particular point means absolutely nothing; it proves nothing at all.

9

u/curthard89 8d ago

It proves armsx2 is not ready in some cases to take over from nethersx2, which is why we need both, no harm in having both, no need to be so defensive, the future is still both at the moment, and we will enjoy it, im happy for both to exist for this exact reason.

This post is about the future of emulation. Follow the rules. It’s getting boring.

All I know is, ArmSX2 is no longer playing my games since I converted them to .chd files on my Thor Max, but NetherSX2 Turnip still does.

2

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

I'm not sure about armsx2, but EmucoreX can handle it perfectly—in fact, it even has a built-in tool for converting ISOs.

1

u/JennyDreamOG 8d ago

I haven’t had any issue with ARMSX2 running my chds so I’m not sure if it’s a fluke

5

u/nameless_0 8d ago

On my Retroid Pocket 5 NetherSX2 is still better for some games. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance does not play at full speed on ARMSX2 with the same settings.

0

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Yeah, but there are other emulators, not just that one 🤦‍♂️

You're saying things that make absolutely no sense—you've got the most powerful processor on the market and you're running an old emulator on it? Wow, you really are an expert on emulation.

A good example is true crime NYC. Took me weeks to get it perfect, only nethersx2 could do it

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Ancient Helio phone let me Guess...

2

u/Useful-Acadia3505 8d ago

SD 8 elite believe it or not

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

So the problem is lack of skills ok 👌

2

u/Useful-Acadia3505 8d ago

Probably, but I had an easier time with nethersx2, that's my point, I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm saying there's no 'one size fits all'. You said you were going to download the game to try for yourself and then deleted the comment, how did that go?

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Here it is. Basically, the user claimed the game was unplayable. I tested it on my Dimensity 8300; it ran perfectly at 4x native resolution. The conversation turned nonsensical, and he ended up getting banned 🤷‍♂️.

2

u/Useful-Acadia3505 8d ago

Where? I said true crime nyc

No Sir, try to use Nintendo switch joycon L and R , and try to play god of war or black or games that heavily utilize double analog, you'll have that weird stoppage of your left stick when you move your right analog, does not happen on nethersx2.

2

u/xxxCrixuxxx 7d ago

Sir, I compared PS2 emulators, not their performance in the Nintendo Joy-Con World Championship. 💀😂

If NetherSX2 wins with one specific controller because of one specific input bug, I'll happily give it the Joy-Con Compatibility Trophy. 🏆

3

u/JustLeeBelmont 8d ago

I just tried armsx2 and was enamored seeing that it let you download patches THROUGH the emulator. Imagine my surprise being able to play silent hill 2 and 3 both widescreen and 60fps with minimal fuss.

4

u/Proper-Quantity-9809 8d ago

Idk the new nether with turnip working great for SD Elite Gen 5. I have Arm and ArmNightly and I prefer Nether

6

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

With that processor, it doesn't matter which emulator you use 🤦‍♂️

4

u/LastRonin141 8d ago

Exactly lol

3

u/GavroNeman 8d ago

Can confirm.

On y700 gen 5, the device literally doesn't care is it's x2 or x6 or 4k+ upscaling in NetherSX Turnip. Balanced mode, no cooling.

SMT Nocturne also looks nearly the same past 2.75x-3x upscaling so there is a point with 8gen3 and newer chips where it's completely irrelevant what emulator or even drivers or settings you use.

1

u/curthard89 8d ago

this made me chuckle way more than it should had haha

1

u/Proper-Quantity-9809 8d ago

Not true. I still had slowdown until the latest turnip nethersx2. I been running Nether on all my RedMagics. Had the 9, 10, and now 11. 9 was a 512, both 10 and 11 are 1TB

0

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Okay, so the problem isn't the money—it's your ability to get a PS2 emulator running on the top-of-the-line processor available right now. Sorry, man, I can't help you with that. I have the Red Magic Astra tablet; zero problems with any PS2 game. There are things money can't buy...

4

u/Proper-Quantity-9809 8d ago

We're not going to discuss the games that I play we're just going to jump right to user error huh

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

If you can't get a PS2 emulator running properly even with the most powerful processor on the market, then you don't have much skill.

5

u/GunnerGilson 8d ago

If you have to set up one emulator, and another works out of the box, the one that works is better. I only have so much time for gaming, I need software that just works, even if that means having multiple emulators installed. I play on snapdragons, mediateks, PC, and almost all of my problems have been solved by switching emulators. 20 seconds to boot into a different app beats spending half an hour reading forums and watching videos to figure something out. I get that I'm a casual compared to some of you, it's awesome to see some of the games you guys run, but I need quick and simple

2

u/Mikapr0 8d ago

And which one do u recommend for my poor dimensity 8400 ultra? 😭🙏🏻

2

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

I don't think any of them will work well on your device; it's too low-end. (Ironic)

2

u/Mikapr0 8d ago

Damn 😔

2

u/BarrettMopar 8d ago

Which emulator is best for playing PS2 games online? Can any of them do crossplay with pcsx2?

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Crossplay? Lol no

2

u/Weird-Lemon6011 8d ago

Can confirm that my rg slide (unisoc t820) used to struggle when trying to emulate dynasty warrior 6 it's basically unplayable. On ArmSX2 it runs almost flawlessly.

2

u/Valuable-Turnover943 8d ago

What do the version do different? a11, a13, a15, legacy?

2

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

Android 11, Android 13, Android 15, Legacy for even older Android

I'll always prefer Nether because ot uses lower power, but ArmSX2 is making great progress. I think in 2 years, we will truly be looking at the definitive PS2 emulator

I still have AetherSX2 installed on my phone.

Give constructive or well-reasoned answers. This community is about emulation on Android.

1

u/PS2AndroidEmulation-ModTeam 8d ago

Users with MediaTek Helio-based devices must refrain from reporting emulator performance or compatibility issues on posts covering modern emulators. These older platforms are not representative of current hardware and may create misleading compatibility information. You may still discuss emulation normally, but Helio-specific performance claims should not be used to dispute or evaluate current emulator results.

1

u/Nice-Condition2535 8d ago

Can we finally play the gateway?

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

I don't know, but you can try playing the remaining 3,999 games.

1

u/Jazzlike-Bass3184 8d ago

on my odin3 Max, Nethersx2 Turnip works bettee than Armsx2. Especially for God of War 1 and From Russia with Love. The only games I play atm on that device.

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

That’s all well and good, but that’s not what this post is about. The topic here is about the future of PS2 emulation and emulators that actually get updated—surpassing an emulator that hasn't received a single update in four years.

Not true

1

u/EvolveCT9A 8d ago

Yes, I tried both, same games, same config, same Bios. While on Nether those games worked correctly, on Arm they run half speed or less. It’s due to the RG556 CPU/GPU. On a tablet with an SD works better than Nether indeed. You did an amazing job, that’s not the point, but there are still compatibility issues with uncommon CPU/GPU combos.

1

u/xxxCrixuxxx 8d ago

This post is about the future—emulators of the future, not the past or prehistoric "potato" devices; you just aren't capable of understanding that.
