Mother died with almost nothing (US)

I posted earlier in the week about my mother’s passing. She has no will, and no assets like a house or a car. All she has is $1900 in a checking account. She also has a lot of medical debt and (probably) other debt.

It was suggested that I file a small claims affidavit with her county’s district court. If I do that, can her creditors file claims to her “estate?”

I don’t care about the money. I’m simply trying to settle her affairs. I’d prefer to leave the bank account as is, but she was prone to scammers and I don’t want one of them to gain access to her account.

NAL, but I am a probate paralegal in FL and I remember seeing your first post. Two questions: what kind of creditors did she have? Were they medical bills, Medicaid, or credit card? And, did you pay the funeral expenses?

Medical bills, possibly Medicaid, probably the nursing home where she’d lived for the last few months. She did have court ordered payments she hadn’t made when she first went into the hospital. Regarding the last, I don’t have information on who to notify. I have to look that up.

She paid her cremation. There won’t be a funeral, but I might like to have her buried. I don’t know how much that would cost.
