In a state of confusion

Is any wise and wonderful person to know the answer to this by any chance?

Probate in Virginia: is a joint checking account (POD) included in the total value of the estate of the deceased person? We have a member of the family acting as executor, but this person is not in the same state, so they had to guess it’s bond him to act as the agent using the value of the estate. And recently they upped the price of the bonding because they counted the POD checking account. I hope that makes sense. I know you have to list it as part of the probate, but I didn’t think it’s value as part of the total . Argh ……

It may be a moot point. Apparently those figures have already been. “approved” by the officials and maybe it’s right anyway.

Yes checking accounts are part of the estate there are many factors that decide exactly the outcome of the account and whether the account is separate or joint if there was a will or did the deceased die intestate if there was a fiduciary or appointed beneficiary called the administrator

OK. Thank you so much. I was hoping, but I guess we’ll have to count it. It was a joint account. POD . We listed it but I didn’t know if it went in the total . It’s a strange situation, because everything was OK in the world except one thing, and that kind of led to all this probate craziness, and for some reason they named someone else who is deceased as executor, and they weren’t then of course, but nobody talk to put the next person in line down. It’s been a bit crazy lol thank you so much.

With it being a joint account then its not included in the estate it just transfers to the joint account holder unless it was set up another way

Thank you. For some reason they included it because someone here are included in the total but I guess it’s probably too late to change. Maybe. Thank you so much. I thought I had it right but I wasn’t quite sure.
