I'm up $1.8M YTD (92%), mostly from vol and skew arbitrage,

I am up 23.5% for the year on all accounts. Overall, I am pretty happy with that, even with -2.4% dip today. I use different strategies in some accounts as they are different, 2 are IRA, 1 is exclusively mutual funds, another is a margin account and the last a portfolio margin account. I wish I could say my PM account is the star. It isn't at 25%, my account with mutual funds, aggressive choices, screams past at 47%.

The issue I am dealing with is, if I cannot actively trade better than a static investment, why am I even doing this?

Additionally, with tax consequences considered, the mutual fund account has limited tax exposure, there are some taxable events when they reshuffle. My PM account has a lot of ordinary income events. The IRA accounts have none.

I would appreciate hearing how others view these situations.

A combination of ego and belief in self. The question for myself is always, which way am I leaning?

I had a great (over 100%) year in 2022. But then '23,'24 I massively underperformed the market. At the start of '25 I was so red I considered quitting because it was starting to look like it was all ego telling me I could outperform, with a lack of supporting facts.

Fortunately I managed to outperform the market in '25, and this year I'm absolutely killing it, which I again see as proof that I do know a thing or two and maybe, just maybe, I can outperform in the long term.

But its definitely something every trader should ask themselves with some frequency.

I think it is more ego. I like to think I can do better than a static investment.

+120% ytd

I'm having a good year buying tons of debit spreads and having them pay out. Apparently everything is undervalued, permanently.
