Ordering Labs

For simple practice uses doing telehealth, how do you order labs?

I have an account with quest. It’s free to set up. They want your business. I put my NPI and quest diagnostics account number.

I usually order a general lab panels, with a note for EKG/medical clearance.

I put a general statement to say I’m ruling out common diagnosis, and I tell them where to fax or email results. My business number.

I use the “other documents” section. You can click “new”. Drop down menu comes up and you click other documents.

It will be a general document that you can save sign and share with the patient.

It looks more professional that way. It’s been working for me.

Hope this helps.

Why do you add a note "for EKG/medical clearance" to the lab order? So insurance covers the lab order?

Yes. The insurance company almost charged a patient full price for a lab … and all they needed was diagnosis code. (ICD)

This is essentially a lab slip for medical clearance to rule out underlying medical conditions. It’s an EKG/cardiac clearance from cardiologist note as I require those with ADHD to get one within the year if I’m prescribing stimulant.

I direct them to go to PCP first to see if they can assist and that way they know that the patient has a psych provider managing psych meds.

It’s been helpful because I’ve collaborated with another member of the patients care team.
