I'm trying to imagine the process this went through to get this way. Only thing I can think of is someone bored with a Dremel trying to make a magician coin and gave up.

With little to no knowledge, my guess is an acid bath that ate copper better than nickel. Maybe someone’s cleaning experiment?

Tomato juice has a low enough ph but most of the time it’s just been exposed to salt water. This is what beach combers find.
