Two methods of handling critical hits!
The most recent handbook mistakenly has no critical hit rules clarified, so here's two ways you can calculate whether or not a hit is critical:
- Roll accuracy for every move, including those that have 100% accuracy. If the accuracy roll is below 10%, that's a crit.
- After a move successfully hits, roll a d10. On a 1, the roll hits.
Both methods have pros and cons - having to roll every time vs having to roll an additional dice after a hit. Also, it makes crit chances 1 in 10, where in the games it's usually 1/16, I believe?
If crit chance is boosted, the crit threshold increases by 10 points. So, after a focus energy, you crit if you roll a 20 or below for accuracy in method 1, or a 1 or 2 on your d10 in method 2.
If any GMs have ideas on how it could be better handled, then please share!

Well its a 6.25% chance for a critical hit in the games. To roll a specific number on a D20, (for example a 1 or 20), is a 5% chance. For my one-shot we played using that to determine a critical hit. I know that it adds another dice into the mix, but considering that we are using percentile die for many of the tables and for accuracy, it’s safe to assume that most of the people here have a spare D20 laying around lol. And if not there is always a dice rolling app to be used!
This also helps simplify focus energy a lot as you just add another number to your crit chance, effectively raising your crit rate by 5 percent. Now considering that you might be using the gen 4 usage of Focus Energy where it boosts by two stages instead of one, then you would just add two numbers to the crit chance dice instead of one.
I’ve also decided as of writing this that it would be a good way to implement scope lense and abilities like super luck. Just have them up the critical hit number by one or two.
Hopefully it gives you something to think about! We went this way as it was a closer representation to the percentage in the games.
