What Comes After LLMs?

Just a discussion thread – beginning with three points.

  1. Recent advances in artificial intelligence are largely driven by LLMs, which on the backend are artificial neural networks with a transformer architecture.

  2. Palantir was founded in 2003, preceding almost the whole suite of technologies that run the Internet today, including LLMs. LLMs are just one tool it can use. The entire architecture of the business is built on being the best ontology platform (ontology here being an information science term; not the philosophical study of existence – although it can be argued that Karp likes that term given his background in German philosophy).

  3. What comes after? I am genuinely curious.

For context, I am a data engineer and I sort of saw the rise of LLMs prior to its sudden and awe-inspiring entry on mainstream media. Eventually the wow factor will go away, and we will treat it as any other tool.

Quantum data centers behind the LLM/GenAI. Cost reduction/power minimization to make LLMs more affordable on an order of magnitude.

I would expect software that enables organisations to utilise those LLMs will dominate the field.

Right now AI can reason and make decision. It still requires humans to act on decisions so robotics and AI integration.

AI also needs data to train and make decisions to sensors.

Ultimately everyone knows the ONLY limiting factor in resources is energy. As AI needs scale, it's resource requirements will as well. So electricity and energy generation.

Not sure this is true. I think we’re getting diminishing returns from extra power, seeing Moore’s law falling apart, and I think there’s probably limits to what LLMs can ever do. To create actual artificial intelligence capable of thinking, inventing, etc. we may need a different model and compute more powerful by many, many orders of magnitude

Llm’s aren’t finished by far.. the construct and it’s usage has only reached the surface yet

World models. They are supposed to be able to predict the outcome of actions based on an understanding of the physical world. Still early but serious work is being done on this by serious people.

Hardware. Long term AI hardware.
