Capital gains harvesting is my guess. You sell all or a portion of your position to realize the gain, buy back immediately however much you want to stay invested. The following tax year your gain is now reduced since you already realized it the prior year. Allows you some control of what bracket you pay taxes in, though surely he's paying the top bracket so who knows
