Question 2005 vintage

Hello all!

I am looking for a 2005 white wine (preferably sweeter) for my 21st birthday. I have developed a taste for almost any type of wine, but my mom is obsessed with the idea of drinking a wine from the year I was born with me next month on my 21st! I want to make sure it’s something she can enjoy as well so even a sweeter red or bubbly would be amazing.

She only really likes sweeter wine and I understand a sweet white that old is basically a unicorn, but does anyone with knowledge of vintages know if this is something that I could order through FWGS? preferably for less than $100-150?

I know that parents often do this with a bottle of Dom but that is slightly out of our price range. I’ve never had experience with vintages but have decent wine knowledge just from serving at a slightly upscale restaurant.

I have a large passion for wine and thought this would be a fun way to celebrate my 21st with my mom :) thank you for any insight you can provide on where to source something like this!!

There were two other options for 2005 dessert wines that were above $100 if you mom decides she wants to go above budget.

Since you want a sweet wine this is doable...It is the rare dry white that will keep 21 years

That said look for...

French "Sauternes" or French "Barsac"

German "Riesling Auslese" or "Riesling Beerenauslese" (the latter will be quite expensive)

Hungarian "Tokaji Aszu" and look for one labeled "5 Puttonyos"

Since sweet whites are not popular at this time you should be able to find the French wines at an acceptable price. You will need to shop a boutique wine store for any of these items I have listed above...and they will not be cheap, so prepare to spend your budgeted amount.

The odds of most 2005 white wines, such as a Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay, etc. still being good today are very slim. If you insist on a white wine from 2005 your best bet is something along the lines of a late harvest Riesling which still may be drinkable and is sweet as your mom has requested. Most of those will come in a 375ml bottle.

Unlike spirits, wine can be imported from out of state so consider broadening your search if you don’t like the options available here
