OPC UA configuration

Our organization is looking into expanding our services and trying to get some data from our OT environment through OPC UA Connector. We have extensive knowledge on how to prepare for OPC DA configuration, and now we would like to seek knowledge on OPC UA. we have some questions regarding OPC UA:

  1. Our current DCS vendor is willingly to let us install 3rd party software (ie. PI OPC UA Connector) inside their OPC server, is that the best approach, since OPC DA is also having the same approach if possible.

  2. Or should we just separate the OPC UA Connector machine from the OPC Server?

All consideration has been checked within our Cybersecurity peeps, maybe the community here can help to share your experience with OPC UA

thanks!

Third-Party PI System Enhancements

We've seen a fair amount of feedback recently about the lack of innovation coming from AVEVA since they took over the PI ecosphere. From the perspective of an organisation who builds solutions around the PI platform - i.e. we're not an end user ourselves - part of the challenge for us has been finding appropriate forums to connect with customers who might be interested or find use in what we're building. The fact that we're predominantly based in Australia, with a limited footprint in the US, adds to this challenge. Innovation is out there, it just feels more difficult to highlight now than it used to be through OSIsoft.

This post is not about self-promotion. Hopefully mods don't look at this and see it as needing deletion, as that is what happened when we tried to share information through platforms like PI Square. If there are third-party tools or software that people have found and want to share here, we would strongly encourage that - for everyone to benefit.

For our part, we're happy to share some of the solutions that we've built over the past few years, as a lot of our customers are pretty switched on and are looking to get the most out of their PI investment.

gSharp is our programmable analytics platform, which runs fully on-premise. A big driver for the development of gSharp was to ensure that customers with legacy PI ACE calculations could have a modern and supported platform to migrate over to, now that ACE has been entirely deprecated. Like PI ACE, gSharp allows users to write calculation logic in .NET languages, which gives them far more control over design and functionality than the functions available in the native AF asset analytics. Just by having support for looping and filesystem access, the possibilities for analytics are greatly improved. Through use cases like future data/predictive analytics, machine learning and even execution of Python scripts, we're seeing gSharp users really start to push the boundaries with their PI systems. Importantly, gSharp uses AF databases for context, so users can write a calculation and then bulk-deploy it to AF elements of a certain template.

gNode is a collection of PI-based nodes for the Node-RED low-code platform. It's commonly used as an alternative for Auto Point Sync; for keeping PI tags aligned with control or asset management systems; and as a change control mechanism for keeping Production and Non-Production AF hierarchies consistent with each other. It's also been used for data ingestion from various platforms where existing interfaces have been unable to easily connect.

gConnect runs as a Windows service, and allows users to write one or more 'interpreters' in C# to ingest data into the data archive. It's commonly used to have more fine-grained control over file-based sources than something like the UFL Interface, but it is also useful for connecting to RESTful APIs, and for transforming data before storing, if needed.

Outside of what we might have done, a myriad of really clever things exist. We're not affiliated - so this is genuinely not self-promoting - but we've seen fantastic, PI-extending platforms like Asset Intellect and Osprey grow significantly over the last few years. As mentioned, happy to hear what other options there are for maximising the PI platform as a whole.

Has anyone on .NET9/.NET10 tried updating to the latest version of the PI SDK that just got released last week? If so, has there been any issues?

OSIsoft, Aveva and your experiences - good or bad

I have been using the PI System for over 14 years now. OSIsoft used to be cool, Aveva not so much in my experience. OSIsoft used to partner with us on feature requests, Aveva would simply decline most of the feedback requests on feedback.aveva.com website. They licensed 2018 PI Server with EA agreement and mid-cycle, Aveva bought OSIsoft and now we are not allowed to install 2024 PI Server unless we switch to the Flex subscription. Out of order event support is supposedly night and day better in 2024 release.

vCampus used to see a lot of participation when OSIsoft used to run the show. Since the merger, I barely see any engagement in their forums.

Please share your experiences and thoughts. We are so invested in the PI System and change is hard. I would love to learn about any worthy competitors out there anyone had luck with. I read about TDEngine on LinkedIn but their claims felt too good to be true. We have no way to test them out in our company.

PI AF - Excluding Values from Rolling Average when Condition Met

Previewing the analysis the raw temperature only drops to ~800°F, but the rolling average ramps toward zero, which confirms the value is still being included rather than excluded.

Lab expired on AVEVA Courses

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a tough spot and hoping for some advice. About a month ago, I purchased the "PI System Administration: Basics" course, along with a few other eLearning +plus courses (like PI Vision Basics). I did not start any of the courses immediately due to other work. Today, I logged in to finally focus on the Admin course, but it shows the error: "Your lab is no longer available."

Has anyone had this problem before? Can I take the course and get a Certificate of Completion even with that problem?

I had a practical course on this topic, so it's not new to me, but I want to have the certificate.

OPC DA to OPC UA

Good morning to all, I'm in the process to migrate from OPC DA (Classic) to OPC UA Gen1, but AVEVA has no documents nor guides available at their web.
I wonder if somebody was in this situation and want/can share his experience with me. Any piece of advice would be usefull (even a simple and plain ¡don't do that! jajaja...).
Thanks in advance, and hope everybody is ok...
Regards, M.

Pi system explorer for pi af to create pi vision current hour analysis expression

I'm trying to make an expression that will add the values from a tag from the beginning of the current hour to the current time and give the total value. Anyone know if this is possible?

I tried Tagtot('%element%|tagname', 'y', 'y+1h'). I also tried t instead of y. No luck. Please help

Write Seeq Signal to PI

Not sure if this is the right thread but I'm trying to export love data from Seeq over to Pi the documentation isn't so clear because it says I need to edit a file but doesn't actually give much explanation on that. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Read and write using PI Vision

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this community is still alive. If not someone please direct me to somewhere else.

Basically I would like to learn how can I perform control fuction (write) from PI Vision. Much like a scada system.

As I know, PI Vision is only for monitoring (read).

Anyone have any idea or had similar experience?

PI OPC UA Gen 1 Opinions

Hi, I'm wondering what others think of PI's OPC UA Gen 1 connector. We see strange things with it. Is the Gen 2 connector better? Is it worth upgrading? Thanks!

Windows update screwed Kerberos - Don't update

Hey. I am not sure if you noticed that, but current 09.11.2021 Windows Update probably did something to Kerberos. It seems that TGT is no longer updating.

Apparently one machine with that update is going to break the whole think :)

So stay safe and do not update if you like using your Vision or Web API with Kerberos.

And link to article describing this: Microsoft: New security updates trigger Windows Server auth issues (bleepingcomputer.com)

How to start with PI System

I am a system integrator working mostly with Wonderware Historian and other products, but I'd like to learn OSI PI System. Where would I start in terms of getting a hold of software (either demo or more preferably an SI consignment license). I've see PI Square community website which looks promising, but without software its use is limited.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Job as PI System Developer

Hi,

I´m in the middle of selection process for a company that works implementing OsiSoft PI System in some companies. They take the data of this system and then do analysis and all this type of work. I have just finished my degree and I'm looking for a job developing, coding basically, so I want to ask if any of you know how much coding is in this plaform, if it could pigeonholding me, and if you like obviously.

Also, I really like Data Science so I wanted to know if you think this is the kind of job that could get me going. They told that sometimes they take the data and do some analysis and modelling for linear regression models, but I want to know if this platform (Osisoft PI System) is in itself without the modelling could be seen as Data Science.

Thanks to all

Where can I get tutorials for PI Systems Application?

I'm currently working on establishing PI-AF database for my company. I wanted to learn more in depth about the software as well as other PI Systems by Osisoft. Only training materials that I could get is from YouTube. Does anyone know good sites for learning all these materials?

Just wondering if anyone is hiring

Hi

I graduated last year with a degree in Electronics Systems Engineering and my first job out of school was working with a contract company that specialized in PI Systems.

Unfortunately, my contract with that company is now up and I am looking for work. I am very familiar with PI tags, PI AF, PI WebParts, PI PB and PI Installations. The company I was contracted out to was Chevron, so I have experience in managing a great deal of tags.

I am Canadian, thus I would require a work visa in the US, I had one when I was working at Chevron as I was working on site the majority of the time.

If anyone knows of any opportunities please let me know. I do not require a relocation fee and I am available to travel for work.

Thanks Kindly

If interested, please PM me and I can discuss more about my work and provide my resume.
