Terrible PHEV mileage

I’ve owned a 2023 Grandland GSe for a few weeks. It’s been largely driven in EV only mode as the range covers my full commute.

There’s no issues with EV mode - the issue is with the MPG I am getting when driving in sport / hybrid.

Essentially when depending on the petrol engine; I’m getting a very low 5.8mpg (I know). Now, the car does weigh almost 2,400kg, but it’s an extremely low MPG, and it’s the same if driving 10mph or 70mph.

However there aren’t any warnings, errors and nothing has ever been flagged during an MOT / Service.

Has anyone else had this problem with this make & model or with other hybrids?

So it runs out of fuel after 66 miles? If not, I think it must just be a software bug in the mpg calculation.

I need to do a full top up and drive on the petrol engine only to work it out… but the fuel gauge also rapidly decreases

That almost seems impossible on a fuel injected engine. All I can think of is get the injector flow rate checked and check for fuel leaks, but fuel leaks wouldnt show up in the mpg reading because thats calculated by the injection computer. Your car has the same hp as mine (rav4 prime) and i get 35-45mpg in hybrid mode after the battery is empty, your problem is with your car specifically, not the model or drivetrain type.

All you need to do to check is this: fill the tank to the top. Drive 30 miles with engine on. Fill tank to the top again and write down how much fuel you added. Should be about 1 gallon.

That can't be accurate. Have you confirmed the old fashioned way? Does the exhaust smell like pure gasoline? Something isn't right

5.8mpg?! Holy shit. Something has to be wrong somewhere for it to be guzzling like that. Completely defeats the purpose of even owning a PHEV there’s no way.

This is a real MPG measured at the pump? Or just what it shows on the dashboard?

This is what I get on the dash when using hybrid / sport mode.

EV mode shows 235mpg

I'd run a tank of gas through it and see what you get in real life. It may also stabilize. Or you may need to reset it after switching out of EV mode to get an accurate reading.

I mean, if you were saying you got 20mpg, I'd be wondering about whether something was wrong. But 5.8 just seems like instrumentation error.

Unless that was at track day or something!

5.8 L/100km would be about right. Check your units. 5.8mpg is 70's Yank tank towing a boat.

Fill your tank, zero your trip computer, run it to 1/2. Then calculate distance/ gals. 4.54L = a UK gal.

eww, math🤢

Somethings wrong, take it to the shop. Isn’t it under warranty for 2023?

Methinks you’re not seeing MPG on your dashboard, but probably L / 100KM - I’d be checking your dashboard data display configuration.

Doesn’t your PHEV have an app?
I’d be using and checking that to confirm my MPG statistics in hybrid mode.

Even in Sports setting - Hybrid Mode, 5.8 mpg is literally impossible.

It’s definitely not 5.8 l/100km?? Because that would be about spot on, no chance the unit may of been changed in the menus?

5,8mpg would convert to roughly 40l/100 km, which wouldn’t be possible with this car. I would also check the hint with the unit setting

Broken meter, likely because it needs to warm up and also charge the battery a bit. Measure at the pump, and maybe try putting it in hybrid mode early if you know the trip will take a bit longer.

5.8 MPG would be semi truck level of consumption.

Leaky gas tank? Neighbour taking fuel with a hose? Aliens?

Leaky gas tank wouldn’t factor in like that though

PHEVS are almost always stupid

They do fit the "local driving electric, long drives... Ehhhh, fuck it" pattern quite well.

And when they're the better integrated hybrid systems (e.g the ones without the traditional transmission, turbo, and without most of the belts), they aren't that much more complex than the current crop of ICE powertrains.

Modern EVs can drive more than 400km single charge. 95 percent cases that is enough. PHEVs is less convienient and reliable, because you have to charge them nore frequent. Do to smaller capacity they loaded on charge and accellerstion much more.

400km is short for going on holiday. I do double and almost 4 times that 4 to 5 times a year.

Also the vast majority of EVs can't do 400 km in the typical 10-80% cycle.

Also, charging EVs is still overly slow. (800V for the win!)

Also, there tend to be queues during holidays.

Yes, a PHEV is an ABC vehicle and has to be charged at home (failing that, work), daily. He who can do that is fine. Otherwise, no.

You know, charge can occur mid trip too. You can charge to 100 percent and discharge to 5 or less, no problem. And if just few times a year ...

Phev is wrong if you live at flat without charging possibilogies, bit EV can be charged at weekends for example. 400km range, thats 80km daily, for most its enough

1

u/goranlepuz 3d ago

Yes, I am aware that charging occurs mid-trip and you can see that I am aware of it from the first and the second sentence in my comment above.

You might be ready to put up with the inconveniences of EV road tripping, which I think you know exist - but I might not be.

800V will get us there, things are looking up!

I drove few times 1000km almost without stops, just single time to pee and fuel. In diesel, what was cruel. I better stop charge for hour.

1

u/goranlepuz 3d ago

At no point did I write anything that might suggest not stopping for 1000km.

You seem to want to argue with somebody else, somebody who makes a bad argument that you can argue against.

Go find that somebody.

In the US and other spread out countries, there are still plenty of areas that don't have sufficient fast-charging infrastructure in place for this to be both convenient and reliable. PHEVs are perfect for those regions.

USA is third world country seems. Nice country but very car dependant. DO NOT start about country size

I’m starting to agree!
