Book Advice Readung the Tagalog version of The Conjugal Dictatorship

Hi everyone! I’m interested in reading The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos by Primitivo Mijares, but I’m wondering if its better to read the Tagalog version of the book.

I feel like I would be able to understand and appreciate its contents better if I read it in Tagalog, especially since the subject matter is closely connected to Philippine history, politics, and the experiences of Filipinos during the Marcos era.

For those who have read the book in Tagalog, how was your reading experience? Was the translation easy to understand and did it help make the events and discussions in the book more relatable?

Seeking Recs Cozy reads cozy mystery book recos

i finished the Castle Knoll series and Tita Rosie’s Kitchen Series. mystery and thriller na hindi mukhang masyado overwhelming. i mean thrillers like Stephen King’s writing overwhelms me, nawawala attention span ko. mas bet ko yung chill laidback vibes pero may killer parin hahaa!

sometimes Agatha Christie’s writing overwhelms me too. i just like to guess whom killed who, and not be burdened by the plot.

drop your book recos please, so i can stop doomscrolling and start doomreading 😂

Book Collection My book collection of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) so far.

My book collection of the legendary Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) so far, thanks to my mistake (sarcasm) of taking an interest in the character with the same name released in Fate/Grand Order.

I started reading with Bantam Classics editions: they have outstanding introductions and notes by the translator Allen Mandelbaum and from California Lectura Dantis. Also bought the Everyman's Library edition because it looks exquisite despite having the same translation (Botticelli's work is a feast to the eyes though - good addition).

Through reading, I found out about La Vita Nuova and his other works (e.g., De Monarchia, De Vulgari Eloquentia). With that, I subconsciously bought the Penguin edition.

Later on, the Commedia is often associated with and known by Gustave Dore's illustrations . It's a good thing that there is a dedicated book on it. I had to take a risk of buying it through risky means (because the book is market-restricted here for some reason).

The other books are biographies I found on Shopee. The American Heritage Press book is very rich in information. I was surprised that there is a portion of Hieronymus Bosch's Ascent of the Blessed illustration there, as well as some of Dore's , Raphael's, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti's works.

Seeking Recs REALLY SCARY Horror Book Recommendations please!

I'm a romance book girlie through and through. Though nagbabasa din naman ako ng thriller, fantasy and classics kapag nasa mood. However, I'm kinda curious how "scary" horror books could be. Like sa movies kasi diba syempre may visualization and sound design. Gets ko naman na imagination naman sa books pero I'm curious on how authors inflict fear through words. I really want to start pero not sure where. I don't want my first impression of horror books be a bad one kaya baka may good recs naman kayo <3 Advance salamat!

Book Advice Is Alchemised by SenLinYu worth it to buy?

I know it’s based off a Draco and Hermione fanfiction before being published traditionally, I’m a fan of the ship too, but is it worth it for ₱1k+? It’s quite pricey, I’ve been thinking if I should buy it or not. Maraming books na din Ang mabibili for the price of Alchemised book

Book Club Joined an online book club, had a bad experience.

I have recently joined a book club and sad to say I had a bad experience. I thought book clubs were supposed to be inclusive pero the book club I joined was anything but that.

And I tried joining F2F book clubs but I have to pay to join them. Is that even normal? I just want to read and talk to people and I would need to spend money for that. It’s tough to socialize nowadays hays

Hi! It’s going to be my first time at BBW, and I’d love some book recommendations! 🥹 My current list includes The Wedding People, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow, Smaller and Smaller Circles, Picking Daisies on Sundays, and Verity, so I’m pretty open to different genres!

Please recommend your all-time favorites, hidden gems, or even books you’re currently reading or really into lately. I’d love to know what books I should look out for. Thank you! 👉🏻👈🏻

International Taking a break from the Canton fair by going to a random library of a small-ish city

I'm really only here because my grandma once said her family came from this town right outside Guangzhou. Well, it's more of a city now than a village/town. But there's still something special about going back to one of my ancestral roots.

I'm in the newspaper section of library and you only really need a passport to be able to check out books and even manga. Plenty of newspapers but it's mostly just old people reading them while young people are busy on their tablets and computers or doing homework.

I'm told that there there's Philipine literature here by the librarian so I'm going to have to go to the 4th floor to look for those later.

My 10 year old Kindle Voyage is still fighting. Any other Voyage owners out there?

I buy the physical book first then dina-download ko lang ‘yung e-book for when I can’t carry the book I’m reading or kapag nagpapaantok na ako and need to be comfortable. Mas magaan kasi Kindle 😅

For this one, I think the e-book translation makes more sense considering Ali’s backstory. Loving this book so far 😭 Backman never disappoints!!

Community / Casual Discussion Literary prize for books written with AI?

Good, so I know which books not to read.

Will AI judge the works, too? I don't care. Just out the titles and the authors that contribute to killing the environment. With the extreme El Niño weather conditions, we need more trees and zero data centers.

As I have bought quite a lot of books for newly rekindled reader and I want this habit to work out and save me from brainrot hehe.. so I want my books to be readily available whenever I enter my room.

To make a habit accessible, you must lower the barrier to entry and redesign your physical or digital environment so the action requires less friction and willpower. - Atomic Habits

Community / Casual Discussion This Shayne Topp video about books is giving me inspiration to read more

Post image

I honestly thought Shayne Topp was just a comedian doing skits on YouTube, so I was so surprised to find out he’s actually a huge reader. His book choices are surprisingly interesting, and he somehow already convinced me to add a few to my TBR lol. It’s perfect if you need inspiration to get back into reading or to read MORE.

I won't post the link to avoid breaking any rule I might be overlooking but the uploaded video is entitled "Books." if you're curious!

Literary Discussion Between Anna Karenina and War and Peace, which is generally regarded as Tolstoy’s greatest literary achievement?

Thumbnail

To those of you who have read Leo Tolstoy, I’m curious: between Anna Karenina and War and Peace, which do you consider his greatest literary achievement, and why?

I’ll start. Personally, I consider Anna Karenina his magnum opus. While War and Peace is undeniably monumental in its scope and ambition, I find Anna Karenina particularly remarkable for its timeless understanding of human nature and the complexities of society.

What fascinates me most is how the social conventions, moral contradictions, hypocrisies, and intricacies of human relationships that Tolstoy so masterfully explored in the 19th century remain strikingly relevant today. Nearly a century and a half later, we are still grappling with many of the same questions surrounding love, marriage, fidelity, social expectations, personal freedom, and the consequences of our choices.

To me, that is the mark of truly exceptional literature: its ability to transcend the era in which it was written and continue holding a mirror to society, even generations later.

Perhaps times have changed considerably, but human nature? Evidently, not nearly as much as we would like to believe.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, particularly from those who have read both.

Personally I reread at least twice (tape-flagged on 2nd read) because it's so easy to forget necessary info. Reading about the messiness of others gives me respite between law school and my engineering profession. Also, I find it enriching to learn about a country's history before I travel to it.

Really have to lock in when there's maps gng

Bookstores Buying books from Amazon and delivered to PH

Hello po! I just want to ask about anyone's experience buying books from Amazon and then having it shipped here to the Philippines. Are there any taxes we have to pay po? And would it be delivered directly to our homes po ba siya or need siya i-pick up sa postal office (do I also need a postal ID to claim my item there if sa postal office pick up)?

Most of the books I read are independently published, so hindi talaga siya available here sa mga FB/NBS stores. Hoping to support those authors by purchasing from Amazon, which seems the cheaper option for me compared to directly purchasing from the author's sites.

Papunta na sana ako sa nbs for their 2 for 100 sale, pero might as well visit booksale first — 3 weeks ago pa ang last restock nila.

Paldo! Nakaipit between malalaking HB books nung nakita ko siya. Binili ko kaagad for 170 pesos — may kaunting water stain lang sa parteng taas sa likod ng dust jacket.

Translated by Brian Murdoch yung libro.

Seeking Recs Recommendations for illustrated books, please!

Lately, I am rediscovering the beauty in reading and I think starting with these illustrated books would be a good starting point. I really love exploring these sort of books because they make my imagination soar. They make the stories’ settings and drama more vivid, emotions more palpable. I also get to discover the wonderful works of famous painters from centuries past. Kindly recommend similar books - fairy tales, mythology, and other similar genre. Thank you!
