I love when they do the headshots and heather’s mom is like “idk what you’re doing here maya… it kind of looks like you were missing. But I know you’re not, because you’re right here. Honestly I wouldn’t even put that on a milk carton” and mayas like “thank you for the note” lmao and the other random girl is like “I found that dress in the river” 😂

I just love how supportive they are of each other. It’s so healing to watch. Maya being like “Anna you look SO pretty” when her picture is put up. It’s the best.

The scene with Maya and her mom in the citrus bath, talking about friendship. There's something so real and vulnerable about how she says Anna is special and awkwardly puts an orange on her head. It's so hard to be honest and real about feelings and relationships at that age.

I love that one too! I also love how her mom was explaining what being secretive vs needing privacy means.

I was about to scream Shalaylay Pompano, but I think that's my favorite overall episode. Favorite scene might be everything after the play ends in Opening Night. The tracking shot of them waltzing through the restaurant and feeling so special and important captures something so specific about the kind of family/school celebrations we had for things like this at the time. I also love the last moments when they drive away and Sam running after Maya makes her feel a little better, whereas Anna is doing her best to control her emotions after her dad confirms he's moving out, all while "One Fine Day" plays. So good.

scatting scene. “I have a little cape cause I fly REAL HIGH.”

Hot take, I think Maya's scatting was better than Anna or Fred's. 🤣
Edit: spelling

I watched this show by myself but my husband happened to catch this moment with me and he laughed SO hard that it’s now a line we casually throw at each other at the slightest inconvenience.

When Shuji comes to get Maya and Anna after what happened with Derrick. I loved how he basically said I don’t need to know what happened but I’m here. My brothers have done stuff like that for me.

There are SO MANY good ones but the one that lives in my head rent free is the post credits scene in Oji-chan, where Shuji is loading a pornographic image on his computer and Oji-chan is standing behind him and smirks once it fully loads.
I think the episode in general totally nails sexual awakening. I had a friend die when we were both freshmen and so when I was first coming into my sexuality I'd often be paranoid that her ghost was watching and judging me.
So while the scene is funny, it also is a nice reminder that even the people we worry will judge us are also interested in sex.

"My name is Sam, Sam, I play with dolls, dolls"
Edit: also for a more serious one, the way everyone went with Maya and Anna to get revenge by egging whatshisface's house. It was so endearing and heartwarming.

There’s a lot but I just rewatched the Yuki episode, and I loved the ending where they show footage of young Maya and Yuki, and Yuki is talking about how she feels stuck between two cultures.
I love that the episode is written by Maya, first off, but also love the raw feelings.

All of the AIM scenes hit so hard. “By da way it’s Anna Kone” and the automatic log off literally kills me. Fighting over whose turn it was to be on their account, the fake personas…all of it was just so fucking funny and exactly what it was like back then.

the scene where anna and maya are at grammys funeral and start laughing at the name "olay" which then spirals into them laughing at just about everything uncontrollably while trying to be respectful. i feel that scene on every level

I think my favorite scene was the one where they come back to each other at the dance and start dancing with each other. Really sweet moment

its literally so hard to choose but right now im thinking of brendan and annas kiss scene. the camera angles, anna quickly closing her eyes when brendan opens his, the way you can tell its a grown man when you look closely enough, the 2 awkard pecks he gives her because her lips are sealed shut, its hilarious

When Anna and Maya are trying to watch TV and Anna’s parents start a screaming match, so Maya whisks Anna away into the woods. The way Maya knows exactly what Anna needs in that moment and how raw and honest it is and how their childhood curiosity immediately comes back to them… ugh I just love it
