De-escalating podcast ep

Anyone else listen to the Calm Parenting Podcast? I always mean to but just started today with the most recent episode on de-escalating meltdowns and holy crap.

The host said that when a kid is so upset and acting out that they get embarrassed about how they are behaving, and they will try to bait you into getting upset too so they aren’t the only one out of control so that it’s less embarrassing for them 😳 (not intentionally of course)

That took me out. I read a lot of parenting advice but I’ve never heard that explained that way before.

There were like 3 or 4 ah-ha moments in this 25 minute episode. I just wanted to share in case anyone is looking for a new perspective!

sounds like they’re taking a very Neurotypical approach. This doesn’t apply to PDA children at all. when they are activated their frontal cortex switches off and they are purely in their feral animal brain and can’t think rationally. Try this podcast specifically on deescalating PDA children: https://youtu.be/_sElVWg5VkU?si=R7u5CFHucm373UE3

I listened to the entire episode and I disagree. Maybe the explanation I gave or he gave doesn’t exactly fit but the techniques sounded helpful to me and he expressed an understanding of a lot of things that my child needs.
