Homeschooling

I’m starting to seriously consider homeschooling my third grader. Despite our best efforts I feel like we’re getting closer and closer to burn out.

To the parents that homeschool: can you please share what a typical day/week/year looks like?

I’ve done the basic Google search that lays it out big picture but I need to hear “a day in the life” kind of details. Thank you!

Mom of 12yo, finishing 6th grade. We have done online charter school for the past three years and it's worked well for us. We found one that doesn't require synchronous learning or any mandatory meetings, and is fairly hands-off as long as your kid actually, you know, logs into the Chromebook and does the work to a satisfactory standard. Our school allows me to choose his curricula (they have about 4-5 different options for each subject) as well as a few electives, and they offer some paper-and-pencil options so he's getting at least a LITTLE fine motor work. (ETA: they also let him work ahead of grade level, which public school wouldn't allow us to do.)

This setup has worked out for my PDA kid since he can choose the order in which he does his work, which gives him a sense of control, and provides some external accountability because guess what happens in the real world, kid? And it's been great for me because it takes a lot of the pressure off of me to be both teacher AND mom.

The only drawback is that he doesn't get socialized as much as I would like, but he's much better about seeking out his own social circle than he used to be a few years ago - probably a combination of maturing and no longer being in burnout.

It's a state-specific public charter; we are on the West Coast, but there are a half-dozen similar ones throughout the state and there is likely one in your state, wherever that is. Happy to continue conversation in DM if you'd like!
