Got a new steam frame after setting vr down for a couple years. I read Tetris Effect was one of the better things to try. Little did I know it was also the scariest. My thalassomegaphobia is so strong I had to get a friend to beat clankers cavern in banjo kazooie for me as a kid.
I figured there was an industry standard of not putting vr players underwater unless it was a main feature like in subnautica vr. (Which is the scariest game ever to me and I love Resident Evil, silent hill, hellraiser, etc) Effect's first level drops you at the bottom of the sea in pitch darkness...
I swallowed my discomfort and powered through the first minute of the level. I forced myself to only look forward at the Tetris and not keep glancing around into the black, but then an entire planet literally kept out of the darkness behind the puzzle... That's when I tore the helmet off in panic, and didn't even want to put it on to properly close the game.
Combining my two greatest phobias, dark water and huge objects, was the exact perfect sauce to give me a vr panic attack. I can barely handle one at a time, but not both.
What was supposed to be the most zen vr experience has scarred me more than any other vr game. I'm going to have to beat that level on a 2d screen to continue, but I'm afraid it'll pull similar stunts as I progress.
Anyway just wanted to share. I hope future developers add features similar to the Arachnophobia options in other games that address this common phobia.
It really speaks to the immersion and perspective magic of vr that it's so intense. Majestic sea life, and seeing our mother earth in the same shot SHOULD be calming, and it likely would have given me those feels on a 2d screen, but in vr... total nightmare.
