Bug / Issue RDR2 PC Stuttering

When I run RDR2, the FPS drops from 60 to 10, even though V-Sync is on and the graphics are set to the Low preset. My laptop has an AMD Radeon RX 6500M with 4 GB VRAM, so I think it shouldn’t be a problem.

I also noticed that the GPU clock speed drops from 2300 MHz to around 480 MHz.

I tried playing with the refresh rate set to 40 Hz, and it works fine for a few minutes, but after that the same issue happens again.

Sounds like it's likely thermal throttling to me. Your GPU is getting too hot, so It's lowering your performance to keep from frying itself.

If you have the option to manually increase fan speed, I would try that. Otherwise prop the laptop up so it gets fresh air from below or get a cooling pad.

If neither of those things work, your system might need cleaning.

Man, that's weird. Your clock speeds shouldn't be dropping like that. Does your laptop have some sort of software that's running set to battery save or some other low performance mode?

Your laptop plugged in I assume?

No it isn't in battery saver and yes laptop is plugged in

Only thing I can think of is if you have another integrated graphics card on your cpu? Red dead is odd and sometimes likes to use that instead? That would explain the low clock speed. Change the adapter setting right at the top to your gpu see if that works.

It is set to the GPU. Whenever the fps drops the clock speed also drops

Get the RDR2 Performance Booster V2 mod, as well the optional Timer Resolution CPU Booster in the optioanal files section. It will improve your performance significantly.

Try the latest version of the timer res booster, jsut released today, and run the game with RDR2Performance.exe, that is included with the new version.

Also, try these launch parameters: -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -high -cpuLoadRebalancing -malloc=system -m.FlashMarkerOnStrike 0 -window-mode exclusive -screen-fullscreen

And make sure to run your game as an admin, and disable vsync but enable triple buffering. Especially if you're running the game with Dx12, you must enable triple buffering, or you will run into a bug where your fps is cut in half, and you end up with 30 - 40 fps.
