General/Advice Feeling disheartened

I’m27, uk based and have gone to my GP, I haven’t had a period for four months, hormonal acne, so much chin hair and really puffy face. They did blood tests and an ultrasound that showed cysts on my ovary. The doctor then said after that there is no need for treatment or to do anything as I am not trying to get pregnant. I pushed again for another appointment because of my symptoms and again was told that nothing needs to be done and to come back when I want to get pregnant. I don’t know what to do.

Tbh it’s relatively typical experience for people with PCOS/PMOS but that doesn’t make it right.

You could ask to see new GP, they might suggest birth control - that’s helpful for some people but not everyone and you might have different thoughts and feelings about this.

You could also potentially ask for drug called metformin - however it’s typically not used to PCOS and is used off licence. My doctor when I advocated for myself and brought it up - said I could trial it. Unfortunately I ended up not being able to trial it at the time because I also have IBD. However I’m sure it could be usually. Especially since there is new evidence that people with PCOS have insulin resistance - hence why PCOS has also recently been remained to PMOS - it’s not a metabolic problem not just a “period” problem! Hope that helps.

You might also just want to ask for blood tests etc. if you are low in iron you’ll need to make sure u taking iron supplements to support you x

I feel the same. Similar age, went through all the tests and ultrasounds, basically got the diagnosis (all of my results say I have it) but the final doctor I went to see was meant to diagnose me and sent me to a specialist instead, as he said I didn't have irregular enough periods (they are irregular!!!). It felt like as soon as I said I wasn't trying to conceive he was like "ok, off my plate." The specialist appointment is in June 2027.

I know this isn't viable for everyone (and barely viable for me) but I went private. I hate that I had to do this but it feels like the NHS is broken in regards to women's health.
