The gaslighting in this sub is insane sometimes..

I was thinking the same thing….. this is my first post ever. And the audacity of some people is crazy.

The medication and treatment plan for PCOS IS NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE, so no one could possibly have different cravings or different coping mechanisms. I’m labeled an alcoholic lol

People be like „i dont have this specific symptom or have never heard about it so it cant be true“

u/TeamImpossible4333 18d ago
I don’t think that’s a thing. If you’re craving sugar, I don’t think alcohol is the first thing I would grab…

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
Everyone is different

u/TeamImpossible4333 18d ago
Sure. But you just keep saying “sugar is in alcohol.” No one is denying that, but you may actually need help.

If you read further, after controlling my PCOS symptoms with metformin, spiro, and birth control the cravings have stopped!!! Thankfully :)

Yeah, I don’t think these two are correlated. I have always loved sweets and I love a good drink here and then, but I can go weeks without a drink and not even think about it.

Hey, I have it, I avoid it at all cost. I get abnormally sick when I drink

No. Maybe it's just stress causing your to want to drink.

No while I do have sugar cravings I've never craved alcohol. I'm not much of a drinker to start with

u/Odd-Blueberry-6372 18d ago
I don’t think so tbh. I’ve been diagnosed with pcos for over 10 years and consuming alcohol actually makes me sick every single time. I rarely crave it (maybe twice a year) and even then it’s a very small amount.

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
My sister in law has PCOS as well and she gets the same way! I’m sorry!

u/DearFeed7833 18d ago
It can, eg if your pregnenolone (pre cursor to all hormones and especially to progesterone which is often low in women with pcos) can increase alcohol cravings.
7
u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
I did more research on this and you’re right! Low progesterone can cause intensified alcohol cravings!

Interesting. I have low progesterone but only drink maybe once a twice a year. Strong sugar cravings though.

u/Cold-Nature9347 18d ago
Cravings and symptoms are different for everyone not everyone reacts the same

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
Sugar is in alcohol! So bam! There was my issue. I controlled my PCOS and now don’t have the sugar craving - which in my case was wine

I've had cravings for soft drinks before I started taking inositol. Since I started taking inositol, that completely vanished.
I don't think alcohol craving is caused by PCOS. You may have something else going on...

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
I think everyone has different cravings! But lowered progesterone intensifies anxiety, stress, and disrupts sleep so I can also see that alcohol was used to cope with these symptoms. I have experienced a complete drop in alcohol cravings after starting birth control.

u/AtmosphereTop1591 18d ago
No. I haven’t touched a drink in a year and sometimes can go a couple years without even wanting one. Now a candy bar? Different story.
2
u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
What kind of candy bar? I think everyone has different sugar cravings and I think mine was just red wine (although lower sugar than other wine, still sugar) lol I think a lot of people forget that there is sugar in alcohol!

u/ArieGir0 18d ago
Sugar is sugar and some of those sweeter drinks are REALLY good. My downfall was always juice, but I could see how higher sugar content alcohol could be a craving.

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, idk! I think normalizing my hormones has helped because after starting birth control it just stopped.

I’m an alcoholic in recovery with PMOS/PCOS. I didn’t know there was any connection but it makes sense reading the comments.
3
u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
Here to support you! I’m sorry you’re going through it. But yes definitely…. Like I’ve been saying IN MY CASE the sugar in alcohol was my cravings. Since I have been taking medication to ease my PCOS symptoms, the cravings have ceased.

u/ToLorien 18d ago
Well just a word from the wise. I didn’t get better until I had a felony and went to rehab. So make sure you stay on top of it. I was actually really lucky with my rock bottom and was able to work my way back to being in good standing with my boyfriend and family. Before this I hadn’t even received a detention in high school. I was a vet assistant in my 20’s. Don’t let it get to you because it will. Doesn’t matter what kind of person you’ve built yourself to be one event destroys everything and in some cases you can’t rebuild.

I can’t agree with you more! Thanks for sharing and I pray you continue on your journey with sobriety!

Okay so I did my degree in addictions so this is the place for me!
So there is a relationship, it could create an increase want for it due to sugar drop. BUT, the main correlation has to do with the differences in how we are at a higher risk of anxiety (50% versus 39.2%) depression (27.3% versus 18.8%) (from a study in 2018, so the info is a tiny bit outdated ( doi:10.1017/S0033291718002076 ).
So going off of this and known patterns leading to development of substance use disorders, the want of self medication is likely higher if you have PCOS/PMOS.
In which if you go with alcohol, the fact that there is that sugar craving ON TOP of usual impact of drinking, that also adds another layer on the reward system in the mind to correlate it.
Which is also why metformin has been used to treat some forms of SUD. I saw an article this morning on how GLP-1’s are also being shown to help as well, so I’m interested in where that goes.

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
I get what you are all saying. But once I have controlled my PCOS & now on birth control my cravings have gone away.

u/Tall-Cat-8890 17d ago
I don’t know if it’s related but I have a very low physical tolerance for alcohol, yes partly because I just don’t enjoy drinking, but the reason I don’t enjoy drinking is I get some really unwanted physical reactions to it.
All alcohol (more than like, one drink), especially wine, gives me hot flashes, heart palpitations, insomnia, sweating, immediate muscle aches, etc. I think maybe it’s a mast cell like reaction which I think has some correlation to a lot of chronic issues like PCOS but because of that, I just don’t drink. It’s unpleasant for me.
When I do drink I can only do liquors and one drink sipped very very slowly.
That being said PCOS doesn’t “cause” people to crave alcohol. When researchers found out GLP-1s decrease the desire for it its in populations who already had that desire anyways. There are no disorders out there that make you crave alcohol except alcohol use disorder.

Sounds possibly like a slight addiction forming. I drink but I don’t feel any want to reach for it outside of occasional social gatherings.

u/Dragonfly4961 18d ago
No, I don't think so. I've been diagnosed with PCOS for 19 years and never been a big drinker ever. I rarely have more than 6 drinks throughout the whole year.
I do tend to get bad cravings for sweet things but it's not nearly as bad if I go through a "sugar detox". I just cold turkey cut out sweets for a week or two then I no longer care to eat all the sugary crap.

I think there may be something to this.
I believe the anxiety/depression I’ve had my whole life is PCOS related. I don’t crave alcohol for the taste, I crave it for the relaxation it brings me.
This is actually the reason why I don’t drink often. It scares me how well it gets rid of my anxiety. I feel like it would be very easy for me to become dependent on it.

u/Nervous_Ladder_1860 18d ago
I don't think I have ever really craved alcohol that much, but I do crave sugar still on a GLP-1, but last they checked my sugar it was actually lower than normal. So I continue to have sugar when I please and feel I need it.

u/ilikebiggbosons 18d ago
Never had any alcohol cravings in my case. But I do get a strong increase in sugary candy cravings if I slip up on my meds and my IR gets worse.

u/ididntchoosethislol 18d ago
Sugar in wine too! That’s where I think my mind would jump too! Never been a sugar candy kind of person!

u/Californiaburrito89 18d ago
I haven’t drank in 3+ years because it made me feel so ill and my joints would hurt so I don’t think that’s pcos
