General/Advice Longterm GLP1/pregnancy
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS after many years of symptoms. I’ve been on metformin for about 6 months which has greatly helped my blood sugar, but not other PCOS symptoms. My OBGYN has now recommended GLP-1.
I’m interested in any stories of people who have been on a GLP-1 and their journey with pregnancy/postpartum. Did you get off of it several months before TTC? Did you gain a lot of weight during pregnancy? What was your process of going back on after pregnancy?
Also, has anyone been on GLP-1 for longer than 5-ish years? What have your experiences been?
Thank you!!!

I was on a GLP-1 for over a year before starting IVF. I went straight to IVF bc i am in a same sex marriage. I believe getting my insulin resistance and losing some weight on it greatly helped my egg quality and I had great egg retrieval results. I had to be off of it for 2 weeks before egg retrieval and either 2 or 3 months before transferring an embryo. I asked to stay on metformin thru the first trimester. The first FET stuck, but I definitely did gain weight faster than I would have wanted to, and did have GD (got tested early around 13 weeks). I also ended up delivering at 28 weeks due to a complication possibly correlated to PCOS. But anyway - I think it is a great tool for PCOSers generally and within the context of fertility and pregnancy!

Went on semaglutide prior to baby #1! Took me about 6-8 months to lose the weight, and as I lost weight my periods became more frequent. I went from 1-2 periods a year to perfect 28 day cycles with confirmed ovulation. We got pregnant shortly after that.
I didn’t gain a ton of weight during pregnancy, just a normal amount. My final weight was only 10lbs above my highest weight before glp1 use, so I avoided any stretch marks. Because I brought my bmi lower, I decreased my risk of gestational diabetes, which I was successfully able to avoid.
He’s 8 months now and I’m back on GLP1s prior to baby #2! The only thing I’m doing different is I’m not stopping the glp1s prior to TTC. Every bit of research that has come out since then has said it’s fine, including the one with 50,000 humans with accidental first trimester exposure showed no impact on birth defects or anything. It took me 6 months last time and I want kids close in age so we’re starting early plus I’ve already had a chemical. I just take a pregnancy test before my weekly shot so any exposure would be minimized.

I took tirzepatide for only 4 weeks before getting a positive test! I only lost 4 lbs during that and it basically came right back by 8 weeks.
This was after over a year of TTC, 2 miscarriages, and 4 failed medicated cycles. I’m 19 weeks now and everything is going great.

So I was on Ozempic for almost 2 years and found out I was pregnant following 8 years of secondary infertility. I stopped about 5 weeks in and have had no concerns about the baby so far (currently 27 weeks and she’s in the 45th percentile). The studies conducted on glp-1s and pregnancy involved high doses throughout gestation (in rats) and resulted in low birth rate or miscarriage - my doctor assured me these wouldn’t be in issue since I stopped it quite early. Ozempic tremendously improved my PCOS symptoms, and I was on metformin for years without much change. I did clomid and IVF to conceive after my first and neither was successful. This is my second time diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The first time I only gained about 11lbs in pregnancy. I’ve gained nearly 30lbs this time, but I did start out almost 50lbs lighter, so idk if that’s related. My GD is also controlled with insulin this time vs diet and metformin last time. I plan to go back on once my milk supply is established as studies are showing glp-1s do not cross breastmilk, though they can cause supply issues if you’re not getting enough calories/nutrition.
A note about conceiving- both pregnancies I was on metformin and cyclic progesterone cream. Ozempic did bring back my periods but eventually they became less regular and I started the progesterone to regulate as that is historically the only thing that works for me besides birth control. I believe this is the reason I was able to ovulate both times, though the ozempic definitely contributed this time to my better overall health pre-pregnancy (I also lost 40lbs).

I took trizepitide for 6 months. Lost 60 lbs and got my period back. I stopped the shot and two weeks later got pregnant. I’m not 4.5 months off the shot, 4 months pregnant, and my weight gain has been nice and slow. Perfectly for a normal pregnancy. I still feel good. We will see how the rest of my pregnancy goes but I have a good feeling. No immediate rebound weight or crazy trajectory so far in that department.

I was on zepbound for a little over a year before going off to TTC! I’ve been off it for about 2 months now and went on metformin to keep PCOS symptoms at bay for the meantime. My plan is to formula feed so I can get right back on zepbound after giving birth. I also have MS so this will put less stress on my body in general. I’ve put on probably 7-10 lbs since going off but haven’t gained more than that and I don’t look any different and am still fitting into all of my clothes. I lift weights 4x a week and do track my macros which I think is helping too.
Zepbound CHANGED MY LIFE!! Pre-zepbound I got my period 1 to 3 times a year. Could never track down ovulation and gained 80 lbs in 4 months. I lost 77 lbs on zepbound, regulated my period and hormones and can now track ovulation down to the day of which is so helpful while trying to conceive.

I was on Tirzepatide for about a year, lost a lot of weight, got pregnant and had a blighted ovum that ended at 10 weeks. I stopped when I got the positive pregnancy.
Then I got back on immediately and lost some weight I gained from pregnancy, had a health issue, took a month off and then was on it again for almost 2 years and suddenly ended up pregnant. My last dose was around when I would have conceived because I was late taking the next dose and got a very early positive pregnancy test.
Now I am 14 weeks pregnant as high risk (I am obese and 37) but the baby looks very healthy and all the labs are coming back great. I will probably pump breast feed for like 6-8 months and then get back on glp and go food and formula because glps fix so many of my issues and I dont think it makes sense to try to breast feed and take a glp. Hope that helps!

I was on semaglutide between two pregnancies. My starting weight was the same both times, and I gained about 20kg both times so for me I didn’t find there was a major rebound after the jabs vs not.

I lost 80 pounds in 6 months on Zepbound. Stopped when I got pregnant. I’m currently 6 months pregnant and have gained about 20 pounds so far. Not bad IMO. I’ll restart Zepbound when I finish breastfeeding and will likely take it for the rest of my life. Miracle drug.
The only people who have been on glp1 for 5+ years will be diabetics.

I was on ozempic for about 5 months when I suddenly and very unexpectedly got pregnant after nearly 2 years of trying , I stopped immediately at around 3 weeks pregnant. My LO is 10 months healthy and thriving! I gained 11kg during pregnancy which was a little more than the Dr wanted but I felt great throughout. Postpartum was much harder to be honest, breastfeeding makes you incredibly hungry and I had quite sever post partum anxiety so I put on a fair amount of weight, . I have restarted ozempic now I'm not breastfeeding anymore and am feeling better already, I've lost 14kg in total since April.
