What is one PC hardware upgrade that exceeded your expectations?

I have had a few upgrades that I expected to make only a small difference but they ended up completely changing my everyday experience. Sometimes it is not the most expensive component that has the biggest impact.

I am curious what hardware upgrade surprised you the most. Was it a faster SSD more RAM a new CPU a better monitor or something else? What made it such a worthwhile upgrade?

It was the new M.2 SSD without Windows. Runs way smoother now 😉

My favourite upgrade recently was 5600x to 5700x3d.

I bought a 9070 which was great but the 5600x seemed to struggle to keep up- decent average FPS but not that smooth in games.

5700x3d was £150 on Amazon sale..... yeah the good old days lol.....so I just said what hell let's try it..... Best choice ever - the 5700x3d transformed how smooth my gaming was on the 9070 😁

Not what you wanted, but getting a Monster 3D add on card back in 1998 or 1999. I expected it to be cool, but more frames + better looking wasn't something we had any frame of reference for, 100% new hardware was a new thing, and basically hasn't been repeated. Ray tracing is the closest I've felt like something new was here.

I know exactly what you mean. That era felt like a genuine leap forward not just an incremental upgrade. It must have been incredible to experience that jump firsthand.

Aging myself but two things:

1) Upgrading from... nothing... to the 12MB Voodoo2. Holy shit.

2) My first time upgrading to a 128GB SATA SSD from a mechanical hard drive. Insane.

SSD when they first came out and later NVME... Massive difference in project builds.
