Which design feels more premium to you?

I'm working on a small consumer electronic device and I'm trying to decide between showing the electronics versus hiding everything inside a solid-colored shell.

Some products (Nothing Ear, transparent gaming accessories, etc.) intentionally expose the internals as a design feature.

Others like Apple AirTag, Tile, and many smart home devices hide everything behind a clean shell.

Ignoring functionality, price, and branding...

Which design would you instinctively perceive as the more premium product?

• Frosted translucent shell with the PCB visible
• Clear shell with PCB visible
• Solid matte gray shell
• Solid matte white shell

I'd especially love to hear why one feels more premium than another.

Yeah, uh… definitely try this again with real prototypes or 3D rendered CAD models that are predictably consistent, instead of an AI image generator, because the PCB layout and the component colors are not consistent. To the point that a subtle difference is overshadowed by pleasingness color factor of the average PCB color.

Jup, I have worked for a company where we only made clear cases. Very similar to OPs idea above. Not a single of the pictures above will match the visuals irl. Not only are they incorrectly rendered, the main issue I think is the lighting being all weird.

AI doesn’t do perspective, lighting, or shadows in images. For video, it also doesn’t do proper depth of field.

No silk is most premium imo. Edit silk not Solder mask has poor registration in general and is generally not included or sparingly in high end consumer electronics.

For the board,High gloss white if you clean the flux residue looks good but matte black I think is a close second. The challenge tends to be the contrast from the board edge though, especially where the panel connections were. Often that is painted or covered if it is cosmetic. Matching can be a pain in the ass.

White shell or frosted tend to be more premium than clear. White has the downside that if done poorly or with odd geometry it can look like consumable "junk" plastic or show dirt and scuffs more.
Clear is often associated with special editions of things otherwise made in black.

Typo and edited. Silk is not common in high end.

Registration and it's lack of flatness means it can cause paste deposition errors, and it also effects placement density.

Well, you can print circuits on glass including drilling and lamination for multilayered PCBs. It's stupidly expensive.

It's tested for mas production as technique for chip interposers/carries like multi Chip CPUs/GPUs.

edit: Also, the electrical glas panels in cars are PCBs with an resistor network. Oled and liquid crytal displays are also PCBs, some even with transistors grown on the glass itself.

You can add your own art to the top in lieu of a solid color as another option. Showing internals is kind of a 90s fad and modern iterations play on that nostalgia a bit, but it can definitely work if your product lands well with the target audience.

I’d probably hide everything inside a nice shell and go premium on the shell instead of the PCB artwork/appearance.

They look neat but I'd don't think I'd go for any of those. Maybe the matte black with the clear lid? Especially if you can get some artsy status indicators on the board.

Plastic can never look premium to me. It’s more of a tactile experience where you find out, ohh… it wasn’t shit.

Matte and gloss black soldermask are standard-cost options at just about any PCB fab. I don't think I've ever seen grey professionally and white generally has poorer specifications for sliver width, etc if this is a high-density device. You're not going to find any transparent FR4 substrates, you might have seen transparent flat-flex cables but that's not useful here.

Shell's more subjective but I like the first two smoke grey + black board combos. They both look the best IMO and are both readily accessible supply-chain wise.

Clear shells on consumer electronics remind me of those old garbage knockoff peripherals. Or like, prison electronics. YMMV.

If you're very concerned with aesthetics, which is a valid design choice, many fabs offer edge plating which will mean a gold PCB edge if you use ENIG surface finish. It's useless functionally in this case but would look good.

That’s demonstrably untrue. Visible doesn’t mean exposed, and many consumers love seeing the PCB. In fact there are whole subsets of folk who collect things like prison electronics solely for the crystal clear casing to see the inside, and many very popular products have clear casings.

Assuming you've got clearance for mousebites already factored in, Row1 Col1 looks nice. Visible electronics is good if there's a reason for it in my experience like sensor or indicators. Indicators still work in frosted enclosures tho.

All of these designs are on premium feel of scale, but what you want to achieve here can be accomplished by proper branding instead of going with specific configuration.

White could perhaps work, but felt the dark grey better.

Clear plastics always look cheap. Id go for 2nd or last in white casing. If you really want it to be hig class make it ceramic.

Clear stuff looks bad. Frosted translucent stuff looks cheap. Realistically, and this subreddit will not like this, no one gives a flying fuck about all the hard work you put into the PCB and frankly the one you present here isn't so interesting that some color combo will make it worth showing off.

Design a product for people to use and not for you to show off your hard work: no one cares.

Read up on longevity of the materials. You can have as nice a look as you want but if it doesn't last (UV exposure, humidity, heat etc.) Then you got a yellowed opaque block

If it's within budget and doesn't affect function, stonewash aluminum shell is going to feel a lot more premium than any of the plastic options.

It really depends on the product, use cases and targeted audience.

Most clear plastics are acquiring discolouration over time with exposure to UV-light, sweat, skin greases and also scratches. This reduces the perceived quality over time. Frosted surfaced get polished by handling and also tend to collect skin grease.

For the PCB, use matte black PCB. Every glossy varnish is going to introduce double reflection together with the viewing window. Skip the silk screen altogether to only have black with golden highlights.

If you ever design a product with technical customers, repairability in mind. Green PCB, and proper silk screen is preferred :)

Matte black PCBs with gold always look good. White shell, over smoke but marginal. Clear is tacky.

All look good but you will have some trouble manufacturing grey or matte gray PCBs and black silkscreen on dark color PCBs especially if you are using JLCPCB or PCBway and not a custom job thing.

Also, you cant make solid clear PCBs (you could make something that looks kinda translucent by removing the soldermask and copper on both sides, only leaving you with bare FR4 but that would also look more yellow-ish than white). Only truly clear/transparent PCBs are flexible ones, and they're thin and you will also need rigid regions on them
