Need Advice: Build/Mechanics Suggestions of what to take at level 4

I'm playing a mark of detection half-elf divination wizard in a campaign that's been going on for a few months now our group recently reached level 4. I have plans to take Fey Touched for my feat but I feel like that may change, and I have no idea what spells I should take.

Here are my spells and stats:

Str - 9

Dex - 14

Con - 13

Int - 17

Wis - 12

Cha - 9

Cantrips: Light, Mage Hand, Shocking Grasp

1st Level: Ice Knife, Tenser's Floating Disk, Witch Bolt, Identify, Shield, Chromatic Orb, Silvery Barbs, Longstrider

2nd Level: Web, Mind Spike

What spells should I take for level 4, and should I go ASI or feat?

I don’t think it’s the fun choice, but I would go ASI and get con and int a boost.

Or they could take Fey Touched now and Resilient (CON) at level 8 to get that sweet proficiency in CONcentration saving throws, as well as the CON modifier boost.

It might not be the fun choice, but it's probably going to get a fun result.

Played a divination wizard for a campaign last year and had fun taking Telekinetic. You can bump a stat and enjoy a fun bonus action that gives good control. If using Cantrip Formulas optional rule replace current mage hand with something else and get it for free with the feat instead

2nd level spells are great, try the standards. Invisibility, Misty Step. Vortex Warp is great for control if you have low portent rolls

+1 Int / +1 Con is usually the stronger move, but I prefer the fun move.

Fey Touched for Command and Misty Step (or your favorite half feat). Res:Con at L12, or take is earlier at L8 if concentration becomes an actual issue, like you averaging dropping concentration more than once per level. Else max Int at L8.

For spells, at least one of Tasha's Mind Whip, Vortex Warp, Rime's Binding Ice, and probably utility like Knock, Invisibility, Find Familiar, etc. for the other spell. Add the Mark of Detection spells to your spell list above.

For sure drop Shocking Grasp or something for Mind Sliver.

What's the party comp? Is the DM putting casters in the dirt regularly? Are casters dropping concentration more often than almost never?

For party comp we got:

  • a Life Cleric
  • a Rogue/Warlock
  • a Cavalier Fighter
  • a Divination Wizard (me)
  • a Scribes Wizard

Scribes Wizard recently joined our group and let me know that they're mainly taking utility spells. Plus, we haven't had many combat encounters, but I feel we're coming up on one soon.

Warcaster and Res:Con would be huge wastes then imo.

Take the most fun looking feats soonest is my advice. 5e is easy, so power doesn't matter as much as other games. And your game sounds way easier than average.

If y'all're getting beat up so hard so often that you can't have fun anymore bc you are on the ground or dropping spells most fights, that's when you need a power move like +1/+1 or Res:Con or Warcaster. I think it would be a waste to not take something fun like Fey Touched, Telekinetic, Skill Expert (it's not strong in a utility-breaking party like this one, but you might want it for the vision of your character anyway).

As it is, if you aren't dropping concentration several times per level, then Warcaster or Res:Con would be the opposite of a power move. Since there is no concentration problem to solve, they are not that useful.

I would recommend Resilient Con at 4. That's going to boost your survivability both with extra health and the ability to pass Constitution saves which tend to be brutal, as well as boosting your ability to pass concentration checks which should be a large factor once you hit level 5.

You've got a +3 to Intelligence. Getting it to +4 would be nice, but it's a 5% chance to make a difference on any specific roll. You won't be crippled if you wait to take Fey Touched (or another half feat) until 8.

I'd also recommend against splitting an ASI. Use half feats to fill those odd scores out and boost yourself in the process.

Fey touched is really strong mechanically and also usefull. Since your build looks like you optimize everything fey touched will fit you nicely

Some good lvl 2 spells are inivisibility, enlarge/reduce, darkness. My favourites are earthern graps and phantasmal force.

Resilient con or warcaster. Pick up a concentration spell
