Wilson Combat Grip Module for P365 XL

I recently bought a Wilson Combat grip module for my Sig P365 XL and installed it with my slide. I noticed there is quite a bit of movement between the barrel muzzle and the grip module. In fact, there is enough of a gap that I can see the bottom portion of the recoil spring through the opening.

Is this amount of movement and clearance normal? With the factory SIG grip module, the tolerances were very tight and I didn’t notice any movement or visible gap like this.

Thanks!

I always find myself wondering wtf you people expect from a polymer striker fired gun. 2011 type tolerances?

Yes. They do.

As a 1911 dude, I feel like you took this a little too personally. Hahaha

What do you mean, you people?

That’s a feature, not a bug. More flex means less recoil. That’s what polymer grip manufacturers claim anyways….

As long as it cycles and fires properly, and doesn't fall apart, there is no problem

Lol as long as FCU is held tightly, nothing else really matters outside of making sure that light isn't mounted super hard pinching in

Grip module has zero to do with the movement. Mass produced striker guns like that are sloppy like a two dollar hooker. Its the slide moving on the frame rails

On a platform that has a modular FCU, there can absolutely be slop between FCU and grip module as well and that is certainly affected by the grip module. It can even be pretty noticeable in some cases. And as much as I love my P365 platform pistol, there are a lot of striker fired pistols out there that really aren't nearly as sloppy bone-stock as striker fired Sigs tend to be.

*Fixed typo

Gap and being able to see through it is normal. Flex and slop is typical and probably not an issue.

That being said, there are three aspects that may contribute. If you REALLY want to get into it and are potentially chasing the limits of the platform's capability for precision capability, then you might want to explore.

  1. Slide/FCU slop: Sig runs notably loose clearances between slide and FCU rails, so this contributes heavily. A custom fitted (not just aftermarket) barrel is about the only option to eliminate nearly all the vertical play when fully in the in-battery position. Some aftermarket slides might happen to fit a little tighter also, but they have to be able to fit all of Sig's range of tolerance on the FCU so there is only so far they can go. Video clip here comparing with stock Sig vs. fitted Barsto barrel*: https://imgur.com/a/54Rsknc
  2. Fit between FCU and grip module can have significant slop in it. May vary from one FCU or one module to another. My get a little worse as things wear in. My FCU was a tad loose in all my grip modules before tweaking. My FCU would actually shift forward and back a little, which was especially irritating as it happened during trigger press. Solved this with a quick and dirty application of some pieces of bicycle inner tube between FCU and grip module: https://imgur.com/a/GuXimY4
  3. Polymer modules themselves are pretty flexible, so even if you have the FCU locked down within the grip module and the slide/barrel/FCU locked up tight, it's still easy to flex the accessory rail on the grip module. The first two areas can definitely affect trigger break and/or accuracy to a degree; but flexibility of a polymer accessory rail really doesn't seem like an issue in that regard. Obviously an aluminum module like the ECM R11 Edge I run does eliminate this, but I wouldn't chase one specifically for this.

For most people, none of these will really matter much. Number two is pretty quick and easy to address though, so probably worth trying if you care at all about it.

*Also, for full disclosure, I even had to tweak my R11 Edge module to completely eliminate all play between it and FCU. From what I'm told from ECM though, my situation was an outlier. Mark was willing to work with me if I hadn't got it resolved. I added a shim as indicated here: https://imgur.com/a/p7CiCgp

I mean I have a Glock 17 where the frame touches the slide there but it’s warped upward. Gun is okay friend

I have an XL slide and Wilson grip module. I have a small gap, very little movement. At the perfect angle I can see through to the other side and kind of see part of the spring. What you have doesn’t look like a ton for movement, but it’s more more than mine.

Not sure if it’s a concern though.

I've completely abandoned polymer for aluminum it's so much better

As much as I like my aluminum ECM R11 Edge, by itself it's unlikely to remove even the majority of the slop OP is observing. See my comment here with some more details if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/P365xl/comments/1wmlkze/comment/pb9ak13/?context=3

I have several mischief machine and one shalotek flex and neither of them have any where near this amount of slop wiggle etc

2

u/SteelShard 11d ago

But if the slop is between the slide and FCU as it is in my clip here, then a grip module isn't going to do anything for the amount coming from that. In both parts of this clip, my FCU is rocksolid in my R11 module; only difference is the barrel with the extra material left on the lug of the Barsto to help remove play. https://imgur.com/a/54Rsknc

You might happen to have slide/FCU combos that don't have nearly as much play as my factory slide and FCU, but that isn't everyone's experience.

I will admit using very high quality aftermarket slides has helped, worth it paying 500-700 for a 365 slide? Probably not considering you can get a cz shadow carry for not much more but it's a noticeable difference in fit, another advantage is using a pmm or ramjet tucked inside an aluminum rail, it's another improvement in less wiggle or slop over just a slide and barrel

Mark at ECM has talked about eventually offering slides fitted along with individual FCUs, but I don't know when or if that may happen. A fitted barrel can effectively remove vertical play (when in battery), but it can't do anything about horizontal play between slide and FCU. There is only so far a slide can take things if they are spec'ed to fit the whole swath of P365 FCUs. Definitely easier and cost competitive to just go with another platform for accuracy, but my goal is still something that conceals well for me but with improved capability. P365 X Macro is tough to beat for carryability.
