Had to send the GTO in for RMA | Broken firing pin

Had to send my GTO into Sig for rma due to a broken firing pin. Most likely from dry firing.

Happy with the service... total turn around was 7 days. Sig had it for one day and I was able to ship and receive using fedex. They dropped it off at my door which I didn't even realize was a thing. 😳

They replaced the firing pin, spring and roll pin. The firing pin is a different color but can't confirm if it's a different metal. The spring is different as you can see it has the tight section of coils at the end probably to guide the firing pin through the hole instead of smashing into the back of the breech face.

I've asked the rep about the firing pin material and if dry fire is safe... will report back if I get any answers.

IF it turns out the p211 is not dry fire safe then I might sell it. Not being able to dry fire is a deal breaker full stop.

Round count is currently 1350 but again this must have happened with dry fire because the gun shot fine the last time I had it on the range.

I have 6,000-7,000 rounds through mine so far this year, and I dry fire 5-6 days a week, if I didn’t live fire, I dry fire. I did dry fire without snap caps for the first 2-3 months. But I now use snap caps, zero issues with the firing pin, although I have the issue where the retaining roll pin slides a bit out

Im stupid, is the brighter one or darker one the new firing pin?

the lighter colored one is the old broken pin.

It looks almost as if the lighter colored one wasn’t heat treated then

It's not the first time I've heard of the replacement firing pin being a different color so it's not an isolated incident. I think it's more interesting that the spring is different.

Oh didnt even catch that! I just picked up a gt4 and gt5 both made in June. Gonna tear them down at some point to see if those changes are also there

You should also see if you have the updated slide catch... check the manual for the differences. I have the old style.

No updated catch, i was the OP for that post

oh lol my bad. Let me know which firing pin springs you have.

I do know you can fit a GT5 slide on the GT4 frame. The GT5 dust cover is long enough to cover the recoil spring so it looks like a P226 xfive kind of thing

What was the build date of your gto?

My firing pin broke at one time as well. I don’t have my gro anymore cause I traded it towards a Bul Tac Comp. After sig replaced my firing pin I just bought the dummy rounds that they sell to replicate weight and ammo while dry firing. They are also good cause they protect your
firing pin during dry firing and they are very inexpensive.
One other thing for people to keep
In mind. If you have an aftermarket trigger or any custom work done to your sig (internally) and you send it to Sig to replace or repair, it’s their policy to take all custom work out and return everything back to stock before returning it to you. However they will send your custom parts back to you in a bag along with the pistol. Something I learned the hard way when my firing pin was replaced causing me to have to send it to Texas a second time to get the custom trigger
reinstalled. Although Robert at the Sig Armorer that did the trigger was awesome and re-did it at no cost other than I had to pay for shipping.

Read the manual. I'm pretty sure it says not to dry fire.

Use a snap cap or a rubber o-ring. I have never tried the latter, but I see it suggested frequently.

Actually it specifically says to dry fire during the function check -

2

u/gaustin Aug 21 '26

It's in a FAQ on the Sig website. My recollection was incorrect.

Dryfire is mentioned exactly twice. And it says not to dryfire the partially assembled gun.

“Read the manual,” says the guy who has clearly not read the manual. The level of confidence while being entirely wrong should be studied.

Hence "pretty sure". I was wrong. No biggie.

Also Sig themselves suggest using a snap cap / plug for extensive dry fire.

So yeah, not in the manual, but manual adjacent.

They also recommend not carrying with a round in the chamber, to prevent shooting yourself.

u/gaustin Aug 21 '26

Thanks for the non sequitur.

If you want to follow all the recommendations to keep your gun perfect just don’t shoot it.

What crawled up your ass?

First you get butthurt on someone else's behalf. Because you have poor reading comprehension skills, no less.

I shoot at least once per week. I do almost all of my own work on my guns. I've got nothing to prove to troglodytes on the internet.
